I've just had DD, she is a whole 5 days old and we thought we'd picked a good name, but I've just received an email from a family friend saying that it's a terrible name.
Please tell me straight, is Ophelia Elizabeth Cole a horrible name?

What's Ped Ophelia? A fancy name for reflexology? Hmm

Whereismyspottybag · 30/03/2018 16:06

ClaraBee123 you are a moron🙄

ClaraBee123 · 30/03/2018 16:06

Seriously though, Ophelia sounds far to similar to pedophilia. Dreadful name and she will be bullied.

ClaraBee123 · 30/03/2018 16:06

Keep telling yourself that Spotty

Guardsman18 · 30/03/2018 16:07

I have read through all of this (and had some laughs along the way), but please someone explain to me how on earth you can get hole from Cole?

It's a lovely name Op. I can't stop saying it now!

OldBlueStitches · 30/03/2018 16:25

It's beautiful. I love it and don't see the problem with it said out loud. Kids will always find something if they want to. They'll have to dig deep to come up with what some people have said here.

llangennith · 30/03/2018 16:32

Ophelia is a lovely name and though unusual it’s not that unusual.
It does sound a bit strange saying the first and last names together though.
What do you plan on shortening her first name to? Have no doubt, it will be shortened!

Whereismyspottybag · 30/03/2018 16:36

Over 200 comments on this thread and no one has said Ophelia sounds like pedophilia ClaraBee123 I just think it was a really off thing to say.

Pidlan · 30/03/2018 16:50

Oh feel lick hole.
But kids will always find something to pick on, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. I adore the name Ophelia, but Hamlet would really put me off (and the painting- my God, it's beautiful but so so tragic.)

To the poster who said Ophelia is not in the same bracket as Kayleigh etc, I know three Ophelias under 5- One has a sister called Kayleigh-Mae, one has a brother called KC (Casey). There's no such thing as a "posh name" these days (Thank God.)

RawhideRingpiece · 30/03/2018 16:56

I’m baffled as to what’s wrong with it and also can’t see how it’s at all difficult to say unless you’ve got some sort of speech impediment.

Seriously I’m sitting here repeating it aloud with no trouble at all 😐

Kangar00 · 30/03/2018 17:13

I used to really like this name, but this thread has somewhat put me off :(
How about Olivia, Aurelia or Cordelia?
Have you registered the birth yet?

toolonglurking · 30/03/2018 20:59

We haven't registered the birth yet, not because of this, just haven't had a chance yet.
Clarabel - thank you for your comments but they are a bit daft.
Everyone else thank you, I'm going to develop a thicker skin and tell the friend its none of her business.

AnnieAnoniMouser · 30/03/2018 23:59

Just remember, it’s not you who will need the thick skin, it’s your daughter.

windchimesabotage · 31/03/2018 00:11

Lovely name. Theres a girl who lives near us called Ophelia. Your 'friend' is very rude and a bit unhinged to go to all the trouble of emailing you because the name youve picked isnt to their taste. Id have nothing more to do with them if I were you. Its really weird and controlling. Why on earth do they think its any of their business what you call your daughter?!

Riddo · 31/03/2018 00:24

It's a beautiful name. Your friend is very rude.

ClaraBee123 · 31/03/2018 02:20

You wont need thick skin - your poor child will.

ClaraBee123 · 31/03/2018 02:21

Don't be surprised when she is being bullied over her name.

Greenyogagirl · 31/03/2018 02:24

That’s a beautiful name! I accidentally called my son a really stupid name so I wouldn’t worry about such classic names

RumerGodden · 31/03/2018 02:48

It's a gorgeous name....

if your rel had objected based on naming your daughter after a famous tragic Shakespearean character who commits suicide, then it might have been an OK warning - some people are v superstitious about that sort of thing...but "how will she spell it? come on, that's ridiculous. It's lovely...

TheLegendOfBeans · 31/03/2018 09:13

Has a few shandies before logging on @ClaraBee123 ?

LynetteScavo · 31/03/2018 12:38

@ClaraBee123 about 200 words in the English language end in philia, but you can think of only one?

Oysterbabe · 31/03/2018 18:20

It's not as if it's even an unusual name. I know one in her 30s and two under 3s. It won't so much as raise an eyebrow at school.

windchimesabotage · 31/03/2018 18:56

The popularity chart of this name is really interesting. It was a commonly used name in the late 1800s and early 1900s and then went right out of usage until the mid 2000s and is now rising rapidly in popularity. Is currently in top 500 girls names in usage.
So not uncommon now days at all.

greendale17 · 31/03/2018 19:00

Sounds Pretentious and conjures up an image of a certain type of parent

Beeziekn33ze · 31/03/2018 20:59

Your choice of a good name. Go NC with 'friend'!
And ignore the nay sayers on here!
