That's it really - would you say the name Pip is more a girls name or a boys name? Thanks!

Girl

spellingstress · 29/10/2017 14:24

Girl.

I’d assume short for Philippa / Pippa.

BackforGood · 29/10/2017 14:31

The only Pip I have ever known in RL was my Grandparents Jack Russell, so that is the image I have in my mind. Grin

I do think it sounds more like a girls' name, tbh - I'd assume it was just short for Pippa, which in turn was short for Philippa, but I do know it was a boy in Great Expectations, but I don't think any young dc would have Pip as a boys' name.

Goshthatwentwell · 29/10/2017 15:12

I know a Piper shortened to Pip

I think Great a Expectations in theory but in practise most Pips are girls surely?

MoreCheerfulMonica · 29/10/2017 15:14

Boy (Philip Pirrip in Great Expectations) although Pip in the Archers does muddy the waters.

OlennasWimple · 29/10/2017 15:17

If in an old book, boy. Child in the 21st century, girl

wonkylegs · 29/10/2017 15:54

I know 2 female Pips (Phillipa) so it would automatically be a girl for me, all the Phillips I know are Phil for short

Oblomov17 · 29/10/2017 15:56

Boy. Short for Philip.

muttmad · 29/10/2017 16:55

I know a Phillipa, most people call her Pippa but her dad calls her Pip.

CupcakeEater · 29/10/2017 18:25

Boy - thanks to watching South Park...

Pannalash · 29/10/2017 18:28

I know one of each.

strawberrypenguin · 29/10/2017 18:30

Girl. I know a female Pip.

donquixotedelamancha · 29/10/2017 18:37

The dogs I've known called Pip have all been male. This is about a dog right?

Coey2016 · 29/10/2017 20:05

Boy

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 29/10/2017 20:06

I wouldn't assume, as I have a male relative, and a female friend called Pip.

1DAD2KIDS · 29/10/2017 20:10

The only pip I know is a middle aged 17st bloke with a big hairy beer belly.

Known a couple of pippa's who are all girls

AJPTaylor · 29/10/2017 20:12

girl

SuperBeagle · 29/10/2017 20:17

Girl.

And I would assume short for Pippa or Philippa.

The Philips I know all go by Phil.

Sophronia · 31/10/2017 16:35

I know a Pip in her late 20s, short for Philippa.

Flyinggeese · 31/10/2017 16:40

I've only ever known this as male, short for Philip. I once worked with a Phillipa who some people called Pippa.

I think people give others nicknames, or the person themselves decides in any name shortening, rather than a nickname being assigned by a parent so I'd assume no problems with any confusion as everyone will know her. I love the name Phillipa and you don't hear it much any more.

rowtheboats · 01/11/2017 00:20

Girl, I’ve known three girl Pips, all short for Pippa

notangelinajolie · 01/11/2017 00:25

Boy. Although I do know a female Pip (Pippa)
