If you heard the name 'Pip' would you think it's a boy or a girl?

That's it really - would you say the name Pip is more a girls name or a boys name? Thanks!

Either sex, but would dislike it as a name unless short for something else.

Pip from the Archers is annoying!

Baffledcousin · 29/10/2017 13:14

Another Archers listener here. I'd think girl first, but wouldn't be surprised if it was a boy.

The only Pip I know in real life is a middle-aged, very sporty woman.

BigGreenOlives · 29/10/2017 13:16

Either.

Quite an advantage professionally to have a gender neutral name.

isittheholidaysyet · 29/10/2017 13:16

Either.

Boy, short for Philip.

Girl, short for Pippa, which is short for Philipa.

I've known both.

DramaAlpaca · 29/10/2017 13:17

Either

pinkyredrose · 29/10/2017 13:20

My cat's called Pip Smile top name!

FlowerPotMum · 29/10/2017 13:23

Ive got a Pip.. She's female and yes it's short for something else. I'd not make an assumption though as I also now a Pip who's male ( as above, Philip ).

BenLui · 29/10/2017 13:26

If I asked you what your child’s name was and you said “Pip” I’d assume boy.

However if I saw you call Pip across a park to a girl I wouldn’t bat an eyelid.

I think if you are using Philippa on the birth certificate that’s fine.

Just bear in mind though that kids can state preferences on their names quite young. My DS has been requesting that we don’t use the most obvious diminutive for his name since he was two yo. He prefers the full name.

Philippa is an absolutely beautiful name but don’t use it unless you are prepared to actually call her it.

Misspilly88 · 29/10/2017 13:27

Girl

NameChangeFamousFolk · 29/10/2017 13:27

Boy

starzig · 29/10/2017 13:37

Very posh boy

bridgetreilly · 29/10/2017 13:38

Probably girl but I'd know it could be a boy.

Batteriesallgone · 29/10/2017 13:39

Older than 30 - boy

Younger than 30 - girl

Hastalamorte · 29/10/2017 13:41

Boy, so probably used for a girl!

GoingCrazy21 · 29/10/2017 13:42

Boy, definitely! I would think of Pip from Great Expectations.

MyWhatICallNameChange · 29/10/2017 13:46

I would immediately think boy as my brother was Philip and I called him Pip (only I called him Pip, he was Phil to everyone else)

I wouldn't be too shocked to meet a female Pip though. It's cute.

pipilangstrumpf · 29/10/2017 13:48

Is pip a name? Reminds me of an apple pip...

I’d hate to be called pip!

FinallyDecidedOnUserName · 29/10/2017 13:51

Girl

pipilangstrumpf · 29/10/2017 13:52

Philippa is beautiful though! But I wouldn’t shorten it. At least let your dd decide once she’s old enough

QOD · 29/10/2017 13:57

How funny that it’s so mixed. I would always think girl as I know 2 Phillippas. Both known as Pip/Pippa

underkerstumbled · 29/10/2017 14:03

Guinea pig Grin

silkpyjamasallday · 29/10/2017 14:07

I know two male Pips and two female, so it wouldn't occur to me to assume gender either way.

17caterpillars1mouse · 29/10/2017 14:07

I'd assume not

inappropriateraspberry · 29/10/2017 14:07

I’d immediately think girl - Pippa/Philippa, but then remember Pip from Great Expectations. Never known a male Pip in real life though.

17caterpillars1mouse · 29/10/2017 14:07

Boy*
