If you heard the name 'Pip' would you think it's a boy or a girl?

That's it really - would you say the name Pip is more a girls name or a boys name? Thanks!

I've only known female apips.

Appuskidu · 29/10/2017 10:29

Pips!

SandSnakeofDorne · 29/10/2017 10:30

Boy. Based on Great Expectations

CharlotteC77 · 29/10/2017 10:30

Thanks everyone! I like it as a nickname for a girl but wasn't sure if she'd have to endure everyone thinking she was a boy forever, which could get quite annoying.

Either, I know both

ASmallSteph · 29/10/2017 10:31

Wouldn't be sure.

To me it is associated with the male character in Great Expectations. But I've never known a Philip go by Pip. Then again I've known two women called Phil (Philomena!)

Ginandplatonic · 29/10/2017 10:31

Either. Would await clarification.

thepatchworkcat · 29/10/2017 10:31

I assumed boy recently when I saw it on a list of children for something then was very surprised to meet a girl.

FruitBadger · 29/10/2017 10:33

Instinctively I'd assume girl, but I'd not be surprised if it was a boy (it just makes me think more of an Enid Blyton era).

Littlefish · 29/10/2017 10:33

I know one of each. Equally nice as a nickname for either!

xhannahx · 29/10/2017 10:33

I think it's an adorable nn for a girl op, go for it

Anticyclone · 29/10/2017 10:38

Kirsty calls Phil "pip" on location x 3!

LadyLapsang · 29/10/2017 10:39

I would think of Phillipa Rose Archer "Pip" (female) or Philip Pirrip, Great Expectations (male).

FlexTimeCheekyFucker · 29/10/2017 10:39

I'd think it could be either.

Whinesalot · 29/10/2017 10:41

I wouldn't assume either. I would wait for more information.

AdaColeman · 29/10/2017 10:41

I'd think it was a boy, nn for Philip.

missyB1 · 29/10/2017 10:42

its unisex isn't it? Our dog is Pippa and we call her Pip for short, if we'd got a male puppy it would have just been Pip.

AccrualIntentions · 29/10/2017 10:43

Boy

GinIsIn · 29/10/2017 10:45

Philip Pirrip here too!

MyDcAreMarvel · 29/10/2017 10:45

Boy

flyingpigsinclover · 29/10/2017 10:46

Boy.

LinoleumBlownapart · 29/10/2017 10:48

Boy, called Philip. I've only known one and he is now 40 and still Pip.

LucieLucie · 29/10/2017 10:54

If I heard someone shouting ‘Pip’ I’d think they were calling on their dog.

A Yorkshire Terrier most likely Grin

greendale17 · 29/10/2017 10:57

Girl

daisypond · 29/10/2017 10:58

Both. I think Great Expectations Pip (male) first and then The Archers Pip (female) second. Don't know any in real life.
