Hello All,
I’m a newbie to Mums net.
My husband is absolutely adamant he wants our daughter to be called Everdeen, he loves the name. I’m a little less sure, I can’t find any evidence of it being even a name or being used as a name. What do people think? Is it crazy to pick a name that has been made up?
Thanks for your help 

Many people have more than one middle name. So you could do that if you want OP.

ziggy1986 · 26/06/2017 17:28

Eva-Dene is terrible 🙈

Everly Rose (no hyphen) is v pretty and elegant.

Redsippycup · 26/06/2017 17:41

Oh I agree ziggy Grin but at least Eva is actually a name.

Esther goes nicely with rose

bridgetreilly · 26/06/2017 17:54

There isn't a 'preferred spelling' because it isn't a name. Really.

If you decide to call your child Everdeen, Everdene, Everdean, or Everdeanne, you'll be sure that they'll be the only one in their class, their school, their life. Which is why people will always be saying, 'What, like in the Hunger Games?' because that's the only time anyone will have ever heard the name before.

That's fine. It's your choice. But it's not like calling a child Luke and saying it's got nothing to do with Star Wars. Because Luke is already a name.

Far From The Madding Crowd

My the odds be ever in your favour.

Veterinari · 26/06/2017 18:32

Isn't it also Bathsheba's surname in Far from the madding crowd?
It's awful

RelaxMax · 26/06/2017 18:38

Katniss Everdeen is actually named as a tribute to Bathsheba Everdene :)

It's a terrible name though, id veto that.

Loopytiles · 26/06/2017 18:41

Everdeen is a shitty made up name.

Hunger Games books were great, ditto Far from the Madding Crowd, but the name is still awful for a RL first name.

ScarletSienna · 26/06/2017 19:38

I think you can have Emily and Everly. My Mum and I have very similar names-it was done deliberately! I don't think there have been that many times in life my Mum and I have our names said together actually. (Ours are like Milly and Romilly where Mum's is the end of my name).

Regarding film names, when it is a new name then it is more obviously linked to a specific character. As a pp said, a name linked to a distopia isn't attractive and that is what most people will think as it isn't an established name in its own right. Whereas Fred is an established name so most people's first thought won't be a naughty imaginary friend.

bridgetreilly · 26/06/2017 19:50

True, it's a surname in Far From the Madding Crowd. But as a first name, I'd still argue it's not a name.

Inneedofadvice20172234 · 26/06/2017 19:57

Evangeline is lovely.
Everdeen is an indie rock band from Stuttgart.

Decaffstilltastesweird · 26/06/2017 20:08

Oh yeah, Far From the Madding Crowd... still not for me. Woodhouse? Potter? Gatsby perhaps Wink?

Inneedofadvice20172234 · 26/06/2017 20:14

Emelda?

MoonfaceAndSilky · 26/06/2017 21:16

You will be giving your child a 100% made up name though, so it depends if you're alright with that

But we all know that ALL names were made-up at some point.

is Everdene a preferred spelling?

Yes, much better than Everdeen

Inneedofadvice20172234 · 26/06/2017 21:22

Everton??

Inneedofadvice20172234 · 26/06/2017 21:23

Is your oh a football fan Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 26/06/2017 22:53

Ever & Everdean

Family solicitors, maybe?

ziggy1986 · 26/06/2017 22:58

What exactly is wrong with naming a child after a fictional character anyway. Katniss is pretty plucky.

BubblesBuddy · 27/06/2017 00:21

These names date and are almost laughable! Who wants people sniggering at their child?
