Hello All,
I’m a newbie to Mums net.
My husband is absolutely adamant he wants our daughter to be called Everdeen, he loves the name. I’m a little less sure, I can’t find any evidence of it being even a name or being used as a name. What do people think? Is it crazy to pick a name that has been made up?
Thanks for your help 

All names date. Olivia will sound very passé in 20 years for example.

Personal taste and all that, but I don't happen to like children being named after fictional characters where it's really obvious that's why the parent has done it. Using examples I've come across irl; if you love jimi Hendrix or David Bowie, call your DS James or David, if you like. At least that way he can make the name his own. With a name like Hendrix or Bowie, it is quite specific to the celebrities. Maybe your child doesn't like Jimi Hendrix and only likes classical music, or maybe he doesn't want to celebrate / honour him.

If you love Jimi Hendrix or David Bowie so much, change your own name to Hendrix or Bowie, introduce yourself to some colleagues that way and see how you like it. Not fair (imo) to burden a child with it as they don't have a say.

That's my personal opinion anyway.

"fictional characters or celebrities, people from popular culture" I should say - I realise David Bowie but Jimi hendrix rent fictional characters Grin

Decaffstilltastesweird · 27/06/2017 08:38

*aren't fictional characters

Not all names date. Names like Elizabeth, Catherine, Alexandra, Grace etc. are timeless classics. The same goes for Henry, James, Benjamin, Edward etc.

Whether Olivia will date or not is debatable. It's been in the top 10 where I live for 19 years. That's a far longer stint of popularity than something like Karen had, for example. It's possible that Olivia will become another timeless classic.

BaffledMummy · 27/06/2017 08:46

Another one that reminds me of Far from the Madding Crowd. It was a surname though. I like it but would probably not pick it due to Hunger Games association.

BigGreenOlives · 27/06/2017 08:49

Olivia is timeless - think of Dame Olivia de Haviland. I know Olivias in their mid-20s, it's hardly flash in the pan.

woollychimp · 27/06/2017 08:49

It's not a great name to be honest - what about Adeline or Aveline, or Abelene.

Nonsense, classic names like that have surges in popularity but don't date anything like the trendy 'unique' ones.

The references to the late great David Bowie remind me that while his son was initially known as Zowie Bowie he was actually named named Duncan Zowie Haywood Jones, and is of course now Duncan Jones. If you want to use a popular culture or weird name, give your kid the opt-out!

hophop333 · 27/06/2017 09:53

Is it a cute take on Aberdeen?

ziggy1986 · 27/06/2017 09:54

Olivia is not really a classic name though, is it. It will date. You will hear it 20 years and know roughly when the person was born.

Didactylos · 27/06/2017 09:57

Everclear?

hophop333 · 27/06/2017 09:57

I disagree @ziggy1986 , you won't be able to tell how old an Olivia is because it has been in the top 10 since the mid 90s!

OP- if you like E names there are so so many to chose from, don't give your baby some made up rubbish!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 27/06/2017 10:05

OP, call your baby girl Everly, if you love the name, it matters not, that you are called Emily.
Everly Rose
Everly Jo
Everly Jean

Eh? Major character in 12th night. Of course it's classic. Many thereafter - eg dame olivia de havilland has been mentioned, Olivia Newton John, Olivia Colman all spread out and unremarkable for their times. I'd have said it was an example of a name which never went totally out of use unlike other cyclic names. (E.g there are probably still a few elderly Elsies and a lot of small ones but very few in between)

EBoyd88 · 27/06/2017 10:11

Spoke with Hubby last night, and we’ve agreed no to Everdeen.
But now it’s back to square one. I do love Everly Rose, glad to hear you think it doesn’t matter that my name is Emily : )

Phew :)

Everly Rose is lovely and agree it doesn't matter in the slightest that your name is Emily, I think they sound cute together anyway

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 27/06/2017 10:49

Everly Rose is beautiful EBoyd. 😄⭐️

KeepFuckingGoing · 27/06/2017 10:58

EBoyd - you should change your user name. As you have told us what your name is, it is t hard to guess your full name and year of birth.

Apologies if wrong. Just concerned with your anonymity.

I like it. It makes me think of Bathseba Everdene, and Far From The Madding Crowd is one of my favourite books.

Loopytiles · 27/06/2017 12:05

I think it does matter that you are Emily, should rule out Everly IMO, sound silly together.

Decaffstilltastesweird · 27/06/2017 12:20

Sorry, I wouldn't name a child Everly if my name was Emily. They are quite similar.

Everdeen isn't a million miles from Emily either. Is their a reason you are drawn to these sorts of names in particular op? It may be that you like the familiarity?

Rose is a lovely name on its own. Could you use that as a first name? Or maybe Rosalie, Rosanna, Rosa?

Decaffstilltastesweird · 27/06/2017 12:38

Is there* ffs

ziggy1986 · 27/06/2017 12:58

Rose is dull.
