Names you hate!

Skyler30 · 05/08/2016 15:18

First born is due in Dec (gender not known) and dh and I are pondering over names and he's suggested a few now that I absolutely hate - only because I know or knew somebody with that name and they were complete and utter shit heads!

They were every day names, nothing daft like Apple or Tiger Lilly but once associated with a past prize twat!! I go right off it!

Anyone else had this?

I think Guy for a man is strange (unless from Aussie) not so much lazy, still a crap name though IMHO

FlyDragonfly1 · 06/08/2016 21:56

For no particular reason I strongly dislike Thomas and Chloe. I like Tom however.

Ilovenannyplum · 06/08/2016 22:08

I don't like these threads, I don't really see the point of name bashing, I think had I looked at this post birth and seen somebody saying my chosen name was 'chavvy' etc, it would have upset me bloody hormones, I give no shits now 2 years down the line

Nobody has said anything about DS's name but mine is boring according to PP Hmm

chunkymum1 · 06/08/2016 22:18

OP- I know what you mean about associating names with people you've known (and not liked). DH and I had this problem when naming our two- turns out most names each of us liked were associated with someone the other didn't like. Worst culprits for us were one of my favourite names that happened to be the name of an ex of DH's (who dumped him quite badly) and one of DH's favourites that I associated with a horrible boss and a friend's ex.

Maybe this is a reason that some people go for 'unique' names Smile

Thenightswatch · 06/08/2016 22:32

I agree nannyplum, my name is also viewed as boring and unoriginal and 2 of my DCs have been mentioned here, would be pretty shit to read if I was newly postnatal

Alisvolatpropiis · 06/08/2016 22:40

I don't think I've ever seen my daughters name mentioned in a negative way on here. However mine is generally referred to as dated and occasionally "chavvy".

I think anybody who has seen these boards before will know that people have strong opinions on names, so it's probably best not to care.

As it goes, when I mentioned the name we ended up calling our daughter to my mum and a friend the responses were negative. My mum thought it "boring" and the friend said she imagined a "pretty but quite stupid" girl. Still used it. They deny ever saying it now. I remind them periodically just to see them squirm because I find it funny.

DerelictMyBalls · 07/08/2016 00:36

Caitlyn pronounced Kate Lyn.
Jaime pronounced Jamie
Evie - makes me think of Evil Edna
Mabel - a cow's name
Sidney - a cartoon snake
American names with 'y' in place of a vowel (Megyn, Kynadi, Madysyn)

Alisvolatpropiis · 07/08/2016 00:39

Derelict

I have only heard Caitlyn said by Americans, I am aware their pronunciation is incorrect (sorry Americans)...but how is it pronounced correctly?

WaitrosePigeon · 07/08/2016 00:44

Sarah and Rebecca, Samuel and Ben. So fucking boring.

Quercus3 · 07/08/2016 09:58

I don't hate these names, I'd just never choose them myself

For boys, names with a 'th' 'g' or 'v' - Evan, Ethan, Gavin, Gareth, Keith, George

For girls, lots of names with a 'g' sound. Georgia, Paige, Imogen, Gina. Don't mind 'J' names strangely!

Funny which sounds and letters rub different people up the wrong way.

Mycraneisfixed · 07/08/2016 10:24

Hyphenated names like Lilly-Mae or Lilly-Ann. Why ffs? Why?

DerelictMyBalls · 07/08/2016 10:42

Ali - Kathleen or Koshleen.

Alisvolatpropiis · 07/08/2016 10:55

Oh I see! Thanks Derelict.

Caken · 07/08/2016 11:14

Names that end with an -ayden sound.
Hyphenated names.
'Normal' names with different/odd spelling.
Names like Nevaeh (Heaven spelled backwards).

BikeRunSki · 07/08/2016 11:20

I have a totally irrational dislike of George and all the feminine derivatives; also Charlotte.

DiscordiaVanDiemen · 07/08/2016 11:25

Rebecca. Never met one I didn't loathe. Don't like the names Rachel or Ruth either (though I've met nice examples of both)

EllenDegenerate · 07/08/2016 11:33

Kirsty
Zara/Sara
Louise
Angie/Angela
Nicola
Eleanor
Michelle
Ian
David
Martin
Leslie/Lesley
Hilary
Harriet
Chloe
Carl/Karl
Jackie

They're just all so awful!

FuzzyOwl · 07/08/2016 11:36

Generally I dislike an association with a name rather than the actual name itself. So that means lots of popular names when I was born or growing up will make me think of certain people, which is why I can understand people wanting to name their own child something unique now because it gets rid of any association. As a personal preference though, I tend to prefer classical names even if some consider them to be boring or safe.

Luckily for those who are really unhappy with their parents' choice of name for them, there is always deed poll! Grin

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 07/08/2016 11:43

The Le-a story has been doing the rounds for years - www.snopes.com/racial/language/le-a.asp

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Versace McClatchie yet, that always pops up on threads like these Wink

AnotherUsernameBitesTheDust · 07/08/2016 11:45

ScarletForYa you've put 2 of my boys names in there, why are they ridiculous?

Also 2 more of my boys have been mentioned.

1 to go before full house! Grin

I'm fine with most names, but do have a completely irrational dislike of Leon.

Also don't get why people constantly give there children names that mean their children will be one of 5 in their class with the same name. Probably because I was one of many with my name in my year at school. People were so boring with names in the 70s, as attested by the huge amount of Sarah's and Claire's on my Facebook friend list!

MadameJosephine · 07/08/2016 11:49

Anything with -Lee/lea/Leigh tagged onto the end, male or female. Just horrible. I once met a family with 6 children and every name was something-lee

I remember XDP suggesting the name mark and me saying that you might as well call your child stain.

MadisonAvenue · 07/08/2016 12:01

Olivia
Freya
Oliver
Dominic
Rory
Troy
Harry
Jake

SnoopDoggyDogg · 07/08/2016 12:08

I hate soppy sounding names like Daisy, Maisy, Alice. It's the s sound in them I don't like.

Porcupinetree · 07/08/2016 12:48

Also Zoe, Chloe, Isabel, Amelia and Amelie!

Vomit inducing .

i8sum314 · 07/08/2016 12:54

Blimey Porcupinetree! I hope you have plenty of sick bags at the ready.
