Names you hate!

Skyler30 · 05/08/2016 15:18

First born is due in Dec (gender not known) and dh and I are pondering over names and he's suggested a few now that I absolutely hate - only because I know or knew somebody with that name and they were complete and utter shit heads!

They were every day names, nothing daft like Apple or Tiger Lilly but once associated with a past prize twat!! I go right off it!

Anyone else had this?

New to the thread so these have probably all been mentioned:

Kayden
Jaden
Lili-Mae anything Mae
Anyone who calls their ds after their dad, but adds 'junior', so junior becomes an actual name.
Initials as an actual name. Like calling your child 'TJ'

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 23/08/2016 22:29

Ellis
Reina
Lexie

DoofusMcfoofus · 23/08/2016 22:42

Oh dear my friends and family have a lot to answer for Grin there isn't one name there that I don't know as a child!

Family-wise I have Noah, Caleb, Harley, Charlene, Eli, Mason, Kevin, Tanya..all equally as shit as each other apparently Grin

Friend-wise I have Chloe-Mae, Lily-Mae, Lucy-Mae, Harrison, Ellie-Mae, Miley, Milo, Evie, Theo, Leo, Rueben, Lewis, Charlie, Dylan, Thomas, Rory, Jacob, Isaac..
to name but a few.

Thankfully neither mine, OH, or ds name had come up so far.

I, personally, can't stand the name Elisha (or any other spelling). No idea why, I went to school with one and she was lovely.

I also can't stand why people would call their child one name i.e William and then insist they be called some derivative of that name i.e Billy..
why not just call them Billy in the first place?! Boils my piss but everyone's different I guess.

FeralBeryl · 24/08/2016 01:15

W8 no, ok you were sneering at the use of names with a foreign origin.
It wasn't only your post I found a bit off - I didn't intend to single anyone out in particular.
I am genuinely interested what you would deem acceptable to name your children if they're born in Liverpool?
What are your thoughts on someone's example of 'Charlotte'
The way it read was that Scousers would be incapable of pronouncing such names which is obviously an offensive thing to suggest?
We don't all talk quite like Lily Savage Wink
I is dead posh sometimes.

K8tyjones42 · 24/08/2016 01:27

My DS1 used to go to nursery with a Hercules and a Ulysses ironically they were two of the wimpiest kids you've ever seen!!

ReggaeShark · 24/08/2016 01:35

Noah for a girl Grin

EttaJ · 24/08/2016 01:40

Yes! Ditto to Claire. But Clare is ok they do generally seem nicer 😳

I also dislike double barrel ending in Mai/May and Lillie is yuck but Lillian is lovely.

There are so many names I dislike I dare not start a list! I bloody hate Scarlett.

Names spelt ridiculously and the parents that them complain no one pronounces it correctly.

DoofusMcfoofus · 24/08/2016 11:24

Oh jeez K8 you've just reminded me that my DP really wanted to call ds Octavius Confused that name was swiftly vetoed!

W8woman · 24/08/2016 13:15

No, FeralBeryl, I was sneering at cultural appropriation. Which is a perfectly sensible thing to sneer about, as two posters who are actually from cultural minorities have confirmed on this thread.

EllenDegenerate · 24/08/2016 17:03

Because sneering is an eminently sensible pastime.

And if you weren't such a Scouse Prole FerylBeryl you would have known that.
Furthermore I very much hope that your children are suitably named Shaun and Chantelle; as is befitting your cultural/social standing Wink

QueenLizIII · 24/08/2016 20:53

I dont like Abigail....to me it looks like a - big - ail.

Or reminds me of Abigail Williams the antagonist from the Crucible.

regularbutpanickingabit · 24/08/2016 20:58

Elliot, Neil, Peter, Robert. No idea why. Just make me feel itchy!

Lymmmummy · 24/08/2016 22:08

Personal choice and all that but for me

Boys
Finley - v popular round our way and not in a good way
Charlie - as above every other kid is called it
Milo - just shouldn't be allowed outside of Hampstead
Lewis - just don't like it
GEorge - too many of them
Mason - we are not kardashians
Sebastian - just don't like it
Toby - really dislike it sounds like a dogs name

Girls
Millie/ Tillie or any other similar sounding names
Melody
Thea /Freya - touch pretentious for me
Poppy - just not nice

AmysTiara · 24/08/2016 22:36

I do t like Nevaeh
Kathryn
Elizabeth
Sophie
Ruth

William
Jayden
Benjamin
George

My absolute worst are Olivia and Oliver. I do not understand the popularity of these names. They sound so dismal and sludgy [ smile]

FeralBeryl · 24/08/2016 22:45

GrinGrin Ellen I'll never learn will I!
I need to Know My Place.
I had tried to discuss the matter but meh.
Little John Paul and R Baby are quite happy with their names thanks Hmm

LondonGirl83 · 25/08/2016 23:43

I don't get why some people on here don't understand why people would name a child William and call them Billy for instance.

Billy is a nickname and nicknames are meant to be used by family and friends to show closeness and intimacy. Some nicknames are best only while children are small. Having a more formal name, like William, allows a child to have a more grown up name for work and dealing with strangers. My brother in-law insists on being called Robert at work but friends and family call him Rob. My best friend is Rebecca at work but Becky to her friends.

Queen Elizabeth's family call her Lilibet but I doubt she'd want you to call her that!

I actually am not fond of giving nicknames as legal names. It seems to rob children of choice and force them to always be overly familiar and diminutive with everyone.

SteviebunsBottrittrundle · 26/08/2016 10:11

Wholeheartedly agree with londongirl. I don't really like nicknames on birth certificates (there are a few exception which I do like), though I appreciate its personal taste and all that. I probably wouldn't do it myself is all - I'd like my DC to have the choice. My DD has a short name which is hard to make a nn out of and I kind of regret that.

SteviebunsBottrittrundle · 26/08/2016 10:11

To clarify - DD's name is a full name not a nn. It's just short.

Natsku · 26/08/2016 12:07

Not sure Timo should be acceptable anywhere!

Uh oh, my OH is a Timo! Though he is certainly unacceptable in some places...

Natsku · 26/08/2016 12:09

I don't like all the -aiden -ayden names
Norman for a baby just seems ridiculous
Have met too many unpleasant Claires
Surnames for first names, just wrong

PterodactylToenails · 26/08/2016 15:50

I have met loads of nice Karen's for those who say all Karen's are horrible!! Hmm
I am not keen on the name Keith, purely because it reminds me of corned beef? Confused

LoucheLady · 26/08/2016 20:21

are you sure the french female florians weren't florianes? i don't think french registrars would allow a girl to be called florian.

TwentyCups · 26/08/2016 21:19

I'm not sure on the spelling so you may well be right, but Is the pronunciation not the same?

LoucheLady · 26/08/2016 21:38

Nope, the end syllable is pronounced quite differently (-on versus -anne)

TwentyCups · 26/08/2016 21:40

Ahh! Thank you :)
