Wanted: girls name. Must be fabulous.

Why am I pregnant again ffs? Stupid Catholic upbringing. My body will an unsalvageable wreck and we will be living in penury for the next two decades.

Anyway. Need a girls name. I am utterly devoid of inspiration, being interested only in grab bags of Skips and having naps.

Already have an Agnes and an Enid. Surname Stephens.

Dislike: frilliness; 'ah' endings; 'classic' names.

Like: fabulous names. I was keen on Ramona the last go-round, but think I might have lost my love for it.

Any suggestions?

GrinPunkAssMoFo I tried Ursula and Gudrun about 100 pages ago before I had formed a name-narrative for the OP's choice.

Several others have suggested it since.

We have to face it - a surly D. H. Lawrence heroine would drag her sisters into so much trouble ...

MitzyLeFrouf · 26/05/2015 17:57

I forbid Mavis from making a comeback.

Hear that UK? For-bid-den. I don't want any arguments.

ZeroFunDame · 26/05/2015 17:59

I was just about to say that Mavis would fit quite well ...

ZeroFunDame · 26/05/2015 18:00
  • Though too easily confused with Agnes when shouted across the park.
LeoandBoosmum · 26/05/2015 18:00

Has anyone said Bridie yet?

SylvaniansAtEase · 26/05/2015 18:04

Grunty

MitziKinsky · 26/05/2015 18:06

I know OP said no "ah" names, but have we had Olga?

LeoandBoosmum · 26/05/2015 18:07

How about Vanya? You don't hear that every day and it seems apt given that you are an English teacher... Uncle Vanya by Anton Chekhov, I'm sure you'll know.

I especially like this part:

People with this name have a deep inner desire for love and companionship, and want to work with others to achieve peace and harmony.

With three girls you'll be praying for all the harmony and peace you can get Grin

It's also not a million miles away from Vera... Think of it as a Russian Vera with oomph! Smile

TSSDNCOP · 26/05/2015 18:08

IME any child named Mavis is condemned to life with elephantitis.

MaureenMacnally · 26/05/2015 18:09

Oh my! I have found my people!

Keep tapping the rich seam!

(I really like Mavis, but as already identified, too close to Agnes).

MitzyLeFrouf · 26/05/2015 18:11

Vanya's a bit vampy next to Enid and Agnes.

CakeRattleandRoll · 26/05/2015 18:11

Isolde is fabulous, and could have nn Izo.
Or Miriam nn Mim.
Or Etta?

MaureenMacnally · 26/05/2015 18:11

And, erm, would now be an appropriate time to introduce middle names into the brainstorm? Or am I pushing my luck...?

No, perhaps not. Too soon. Grin

I think Ursula is a no. Shame, as it should work.

SylvaniansAtEase · 26/05/2015 18:13

Mitzi, I said Olga a while back - don't think we had the verdict on that one but am guessing OP would reply 'Guinea pig' - possibly (the horror) 'North London guinea pig' Grin

Mavis = fat fairy to me, so kind of cute.

MitzyLeFrouf · 26/05/2015 18:14

Petra

MaureenMacnally · 26/05/2015 18:15

Isolde is the epitome of North London! It might as well be Reiss on Upper Street.

LeoandBoosmum · 26/05/2015 18:15

How about Prudence?

MaureenMacnally · 26/05/2015 18:15

Olga too cute. (Guinea pigs are good).

SylvaniansAtEase · 26/05/2015 18:15

Hildebrand - but too long.

Valerie Hildebrand Irene would melt steel.

LeoandBoosmum · 26/05/2015 18:17

Vanya can't be vampy; it means gift from God.

MaureenMacnally · 26/05/2015 18:17

Vanya is quite, quite wrong. I had a brief moment of thinking it could be a contender, but I realise now that if just got caught up in the excitement.

OP posts:
SylvaniansAtEase · 26/05/2015 18:18

No, totally vampy surely? 'Gift from the vampy gods' maybe.

MaureenMacnally · 26/05/2015 18:20

Oh, and just while I'm catching up on thread - West London names are beyond the pale I'd have thought that would go without saying.

LeoandBoosmum · 26/05/2015 18:22

Okay Sylvanian, I concede Grin
