Word Names, non mainstream

I think we have decided on our forthcoming baby's name, but in case I have overlooked something, I am keen to hear any unusual but usable word name names. Not the mainstream ones like Grace, Lily, Ruby, Jasper, Matt and Johnny, but the less pedestrian - e.g. Sailor, Cadence, Calypso, Journey, Phoenix etc.

Boys and Girls please!

River.

This is a challenge.

Off the top of my head: Summer, Autumn, Leaf, Neon, River, Star, Skye, Rhythm, Aria, Willow.

A lot of these names seem androgynous to me.

ScaryChicken · 01/03/2015 17:21

Liberty

aoife24 · 01/03/2015 17:30

I hear Saylor is becoming popular. Have you considered Maiden?

Interrobang · 01/03/2015 17:37

Thanks so far!

I like androgynous, but ideally with a leaning to one sex. DS has a boy's name, but there is the occasional girl given it. The name we have in mind for a girl is primarily feminine, but there have been the occasional boy with it (especially in olden times).

I should have said, I like word names that have a good, positive, meaning. But still all ears for any and all suggestions!
e.g. Victor
Emerence (worthy of merit)

Harper was the first to spring to mind. I also love Verity.

Trapper · 01/03/2015 18:33

Those 'what do you call a man with...' Jokes may be a good inspiration:
Doug (man with a spade on his head)
Cliff (man with a seagull on his head)
Max (man wearing two waterproof coats)
Etc...

I've never known someone to have the criteria of 'we need a name that's also a word'! :) Well, DS has a word name (can't say, would likely out me!); I felt it would be fair to have DC2 get a word name too!

Thanks for the input. I do love love love Endeavour! What would the nickname be though?
I love Fox too, but I'd prefer something longer, so the child has nickname options.

Beer, not so much. Though Brandy is ok! :)

Harper - too Beckham. I LOVED Phoenix, but Scary Spice spoiled it for me.

Someone mis-heard my son's name once and thought it was Carousel. It is nothing like Carousel, but I do quite like Carousel for a girl - Carrie for short, which is mainstream enough if she doesn't want to stand out. But I won't use it, as one of us in the family has a C name, and I don't want matching initials. But that kind of thing, I like!

Marking place. This thread is cool.

marshmallowpies · 01/03/2015 19:01

I really like Merry as a nn for a girl - Meredith is one of my favourite names but we already had a DD with a name beginning with M so didn't want another one...but Merry could also be short for Merrily.

I also like Patience, Hope, Verity etc.

marshmallowpies · 01/03/2015 19:04

Oh and Ember is another name I've heard of lately. Ember is lovely.

And how about Briar for a girl?

SimplySara · 01/03/2015 19:05

Brooke
Bliss

Sophronia · 01/03/2015 19:06

I know a boy named Edge.

Nicknames for Endeavour could be Endy, Dev...

redhatnoknickers · 01/03/2015 19:07

Dove, Trinity, River, Temperance, Tuppence, Tuesday, Raven, Crystal, Storm, Justice

Interrobang · 01/03/2015 19:26

Thanks, Guy! :)

I love Ember and Verity, but friends have these. And I have a friend with a Briar too!
I also know a Raven, and a Brooke.

Endy is pretty cool, actually, I am thinking this could be my top boy's name. I love Indiana for a boy, but it's going into too much girl territory, so Endy instead of Indi is cool.

I do like Meredith, but is it a word name? I love Merry (Xmas-aholic here).
