Finding it really hard to pick a boys name, I've got a little boy called Louie and thinking of Jayden for this one could be shortend to J or middle name will be Joseph as that's my dads name so Jayden Joseph could also be JJ. Honest opinions please :)

X post. Obv wc is not offensive.

"Twat or cunt could be used lightheartedly ( you daft twat)"

The reason why people can't agree on threads like this is that we have a completely different understanding of what is normal.

Nobody I have ever known, and quite possibly nobody known to them would ever utter the phrase "you daft twat". Ever. I can't even being to understand how that can be said lightheartedly. Neither have I ever heard anyone say "cunt" in RL, lightheartedly or otherwise.

PurplyBlue · 02/06/2014 22:23

Just out of interest, is there an equivalent term for a person from Middle England?

deadwitchproject · 02/06/2014 22:23

Of course it's not rocket science. I was looking for some clarity but it doesn't matter anyway as insults are subjective.

One thing I forgot to mention in my original post is that although I don't like the name Jayden/Jaden, I do like the name Joseph and Jay (actually like the name Jake too come to think of it).

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/06/2014 22:32

Yeah Eat it isn't rocket science and yet so many people seem to see the word chav differently, as shown of this thread. What I was trying to say was more a "I am objectively interested in how the word is interpreted" not "people are wrong to be offended by it".

I distinctly recall Tara Palmer whatstheothername being described in the press as being a chav, often. She's what, one of the landed gentry?

Also Eat have you name changed? I recognise you, I'm sure!

deadwitch, if you don't want to be called a cunt, don't be one, it's very simple.

maryz where did that come from? I don't use the term chav or twat hence wanting some clarity. Cunt is a highly offensive term among my friends and family and I don't use that either. Much more offensive than twat.

FatherSpodoKomodo · 02/06/2014 22:39

All I am reading now is blah blah blah blah.

Some people put too much thought into names.

I saw a name, I liked the name, it suited my baby, I named my baby that name.

I did not think about class, whether it would limit his jobs when he grew up, whether it was a "naughty" name etc.

I thought that was how most people did it. Look in the baby name book, pick out name, agree with other half (or not in the case of my DS5) and trot off to the registry office to make it official.

I will admit that my tastes have changed over the years, and though I still love the name Jayden I probably wouldn't choose it now, mainly because it's in the top 100 and I tried to choose names that are not in it. Although 4 of my 5 are now because I'm a trendsetter. Wink

This thread is incredible!!

I think any kind of name calling chav, twat, cunt, can all be as equally bad depending on delivery and intent. I would personally be equally offended if anyone called me any of those names because I don't feel any of them are warranted, and so would be just plain nasty.

That being said, chav is slang to describe a certain group of people based upon clothing, socio-economic status, and personal tastes (usually music related) so it's not necessarily incorrect to attribute a name that is commonly used by that group of people. In the same way Hugo, Arabella, and Barnaby are usually associated with posh people.

But to sneer, and make malicious comments, is just plain offensive, any quite honestly makes my skin crawl.

Spero- whether or not your comment about Jaydons being a frequent name to go through the care system is true- what exactly did you expect to achieve by saying that!? It was ridiculous to suggest that just because of your experience, everyone would agree. I am a CM and looked after children with all sorts of different names, and I completely disagree with your very narrow minded, blinkered, and exceptionally unprofessional comments.

OP- chose whatever name you want!! I would never think any less of any child (or family) called Jaydon, Percival, Toni, or Camilla!

Thought so Eat.

Usual I'm not saying people in general would called Tara Palmer Thingy a chav, I was just saying she has been called one in the past.

I've not called anyone a chav on this thread, nor insinuated any such thing. I am finding the generally aggressive tone tiresome now though.

Maryz people have been critical of my child's name several times on MN in the past.

That is NOT THE SAME THING as people being personally critical of my child. Thered would be something slightly wrong with me if I thought it was.

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/06/2014 22:59

I know! And I've been defending Jayden (as it's the titular name of this thread) throughout.

As I said way back on the thread, it's a normal name. I've only met two, both were babies at the time and would be late teens now. I assume they're nice young men. I did say I prefer the Jadon spelling but it is in sound the same name (in my accent anyway).

FidelineandFumblin · 02/06/2014 22:59

Personally having read " is a chav name" once too often now, I wouldn't click on a thread title with in at all.

But I wouldn't take it as personal criticism of my child (!) either. That way madness lies.

FidelineandFumblin · 02/06/2014 23:06

I am talking about my actual child and her actual name Derek

I am disputing that anyone's child has been personally critiscized.

I know it is not particularly nice to see your childs NAME criticized.
