Finding it really hard to pick a boys name, I've got a little boy called Louie and thinking of Jayden for this one could be shortend to J or middle name will be Joseph as that's my dads name so Jayden Joseph could also be JJ. Honest opinions please :)

You always get the same comments on these threads.

'People shouldn't judge names so call your baby what you like!'

No. You are quite right. They shouldn't. But they do. It happens. Everyday. Why would you want to set your child up to be judged every time their name is on a piece of paper?

Sophie is sweet. Isobel is a hard worker. James is intelligent.

No amount of 'well I know a Jayden who is at oxford!' Changes the fact that people will see the name Jayden and most likely think; naughty kid, sit him at the front next to the teacher.

OK, I have Googled 'chav' images and this comes up.

beatingwings · 02/06/2014 20:51

Seems about right Cote.

That is a fantastic book usual

WandaDoff · 02/06/2014 21:18

I wouldn't use Jake if you'll be spending time in Scotland.

WandaDoff · 02/06/2014 21:19

Or Jesse

chellyyx · 02/06/2014 21:21

My DS is Jayden. Never had anyone ever say it's awful. TBH when I chose the name I didn't know of anyone called Jayden apart from Jaden smith! I love it his it shortens to Jay , perfect for when he is older.

deadwitchproject · 02/06/2014 21:23

can't believe the OP is now going for Jake. OP I wish you had come on a lot sooner and made that clear...

Ok, those google images portray what I thought was meant by chav.

ElleBellyBeeblebrox · 02/06/2014 21:25

I'd love someone to define the word chav, if they reckon it's not an insult.

beatingwings · 02/06/2014 21:25

Who claims it isn't an insult?

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/06/2014 21:28

I've had conversations about names and class connotations. Probably ironic given I'm Welsh.

Names are interesting. They're often the first thing people know of you, some carry more weight than others be it positive or negative.

That is mostly why I like the baby name board. Though I do think it should be renamed, because it isn't just a baby you're naming. It's a future adult.

I think names like Peregine,Lettice and Hebe are far worse than Jayden though. Jayden isn't really my style of name but it's significantly better than the former three.

FidelineandFumblin · 02/06/2014 21:29

This is getting so confusing. Who said chav isn't insulting?

Jake or Jacob?

Historically jake was slang for toilet

ElleBellyBeeblebrox · 02/06/2014 21:31

Well a lot of people on MN and in RL seem to think it's a perfectly acceptable word to use, I'm just interested in what their definition of chav is.

LBNM19 · 02/06/2014 21:35

usualsuspectt don't no any dogs called Jake.

Bloody hell deadwitchproject sorry I didn't log on soon and tell you I may call my baby Jake (sarcastic-face), not dead set on anything

Just because it is not yet actually illegal to discriminate on the basis of class, or background, or where someone comes from or where they live doesn't mean it is ok to do so. Saying "oh that's just they way it is, there is nothing we can do about it" is a tad pathetic.

I worked for several years in an area that has made me profoundly depressed and pessimistic about inequality and social mobility in this country Maryz. I am even more so in the current political climate.

I'm too old and tired to think I'm going to change the world. I just want people to have a fair shot in it despite the idiots. I'm sure there's more than one way to skin a cat, though.

Just because it's used doesn't mean it isn't an insult. The word twat seems to be used too does that mean it too is not an insult?

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/06/2014 21:48

beating

Depends on whether you're using twat to be insulting or just as an adjective, matter of fact like.

MN is the only place I've experienced in which calling someone a chav is worse than calling someone a cunt. Irl the majority of people use both quite freely.
