Finding it really hard to pick a boys name, I've got a little boy called Louie and thinking of Jayden for this one could be shortend to J or middle name will be Joseph as that's my dads name so Jayden Joseph could also be JJ. Honest opinions please :)

I am not playing the victim.

I have re-read this thread. It has not been explained to me. Maybe I missed it, it has been a very long thread.

But the only articulated 'reason' I have been given is the one you just raised is that it may make someone with a child called Jayden feel crap.

But I never said or implied that all children called Jayden would go into care. That was repeated many times by other people who seemed to wish for me to be saying that.

I was explaining why the name had connotations for me.

I can understand why someone would feel strongly about a name they gave their own child but I don't accept that justifies deliberately misreading and misinterpreting what I and others have said to provide fuel for outrage.

I have apologised and will do so again if my contributions have made anyone feel upset. But I can't apologise for things I never said.

beatingwings · 02/06/2014 20:22

eatshit- I don't care whether you call me a twat or not. But equally you can't prevent me from using the word chav.

CoteDAzur · 02/06/2014 20:23

"she has worked there 15 years. I am 23 amd know people with such names. In those 15 years she surely would have come across children with those names."

Spero is NOT saying that there are NO children in the UK by those names.

She is saying that she has not come across children with those names IN HER LINE OF WORK - i.e. children taken into care.

Is there a better word to use in place of "chav"? I'd like to learn & use that one when the occasion arises.

beatingwings · 02/06/2014 20:25

eastshit I haven't bitched about you calling me a twat.

CoteDAzur · 02/06/2014 20:27

"I've never had a conversation about names and class in RL ever"

Neither have I.

Possibly because:

(1) People in RL are not as honest as on here

(2) We don't often have conversations with people outside our peer group - i.e. The names you consider 'normal' are bound to be the ones considered 'normal' by people you usually talk to.

(3) Not many people have read Freakonomics.

deadwitchproject · 02/06/2014 20:28

but eatshitderek what IS the correct use for the word chav? Who gets to decide?

"As said before chav is used to mean 'beneath me'."

I doubt it.

Let's make a sentence:

I am standing at the edge of the abyss with about 500 m of emptiness chav beneath me.

LBNM19 · 02/06/2014 20:36

Absolutlsy Hilarious how many comments are on here, I've not read them all but Jayden has caused quite a stir lol.

We're not going with Jayden leaning more towards Jake ??

I like Jake. Its a good no nonsense name and I think it will grow well with him.

CoteDAzur · 02/06/2014 20:39

It doesn't mean "beneath me" on MN or anywhere else.
