Finding it really hard to pick a boys name, I've got a little boy called Louie and thinking of Jayden for this one could be shortend to J or middle name will be Joseph as that's my dads name so Jayden Joseph could also be JJ. Honest opinions please :)

Yes, but it has never obtained the popularity of Joseph so it would cause some people to be sniffy just by virtue of it being relatively unusual.

I gave my daughter 'Buffy' as a second name, in homage to the greatest TV Show ever, and some of the reactions from 'friends' were so comical in their dislike and shock.

So I know names have that power. That's why she didn't get 'Buffy' as a first name because I am not that cruel.

EasyWhiteChocolate · 02/06/2014 19:25

Children are not called John, Anne, Richard, Elizabeth or Sarah so commonly now.

I'm 22. I know loads of Sarahs, Elizabeths, Johns, Davids, etc. I also know a lot of Jayden's, Kais, Tanishas, and so forth. I find it really, really hard to believe that you have only come across more modern popular names in care proceedings. Really hard.

Look at top ten names for children born in last ten years and tell me how many Sarahs and Elizabeths are there. I don't think there are any.

Sorry, I am not sure what I can do other than invite you round to look at my note books over last ten years and we can count up the different names.

I am not a liar.

But hey, I have been insulted in every other conceivable way so maybe I should just be surprised that 'liar' was so late to the party.

Spero · 02/06/2014 19:28

And why is it so important to you that I am a liar?

This thread is so interesting. Good thing I went through and beyond rage several pages ago.

deadwitchproject · 02/06/2014 19:28

spero your posts are not inappropriate. You seem to be the target of a weird kind of reverse snobbery. It's very strange.

usual not everyone who disagrees with the way you see/do things is a twat.

EasyWhiteChocolate · 02/06/2014 19:30

EatShit it's ridiculous to think that those names became obsolete after the 1970s. I'm sure Spero herself knows under 30s with these names, but is choosing to temporarily erase them from memory so to prove her point.

Spero top ten names are just that. The top ten most common names. How many children are born each year? The top ten hardly covers all of them.

Spero · 02/06/2014 19:31

This is why it is so interesting. So many posters - some I admire and respect - have accused me of such awful things.

Other posters - some of whom I also admire and respect reassure me that they don't agree with those accusations.

Again at the risk of sounding a bit me, me, me! this is a fascinating exercise in group psychology.

It seems very, very important for some people to be very, very angry with me but they can't explain why other than to say I am 'inappropriate' or a liar or I am implying things I haven't actually said.

I am going to chalk it up to the unhealthy and toxic stagnation of social mobility in our society which causes quite justifiable rage in some people. But I would be interested to know why I am the poster girl for it.

beatingwings · 02/06/2014 19:32

But spero is dealing with children, not 30 and 40 year olds.

Well, I don't think I am sheltered. I just don't know anyone called John who isn't my dad or a friend of his.

If someone says 'I find it hard to believe you. Really hard'

Then I assume they are calling me a liar?

O crikey, am I falling into the same trap of 'implying' what people mean? If so, apologies.

But I know what I know. Your believing or accepting or agreeing with it doesn't change that. Sadly, my notebooks are piled up in my study. I might actually go through them and see if my memories are correct. And if I am wrong I will of course apologise.

I don't have an agenda. I am interested in facts. If my opinion is based on facts that are wrong I will change my opinion.

Spero · 02/06/2014 19:35

Muddling - I did respond to your question. I think 'Jadon' would still raise some people's eyebrows as even though it is a Biblical name it has not achieved the popularity of 'joseph'.

a lot of the 'hatred' for names is simply that people are unfamiliar with them. We all like what we know.

FidelineandFumblin · 02/06/2014 19:35

I am 23 amd know people with such names.

Might be a regional thing?

Spero · 02/06/2014 19:37

I really, really am not and it is curious how important this is to you.

I have never claimed such names became 'obsolete'. I said they became much less fashionable after the 1970s.

Again, this is a fact isn't it? An easily verifiable fact? Why does that make you so ANGRY?
