Finding it really hard to pick a boys name, I've got a little boy called Louie and thinking of Jayden for this one could be shortend to J or middle name will be Joseph as that's my dads name so Jayden Joseph could also be JJ. Honest opinions please :)

I am shocked by the lengths some poster's will go to justify their agendas. I have been a licensed social worker for twenty five years and will guarantee I have taken John's, Anne's, Richard's, Elizabeth's and Sarah's into care. I am extremely mistrustful of anyone working in the field who denies ever taking such a common name into child protective service..

Unless ofcourse one just posts half truths and evasions to further their spurious claims.

FidelineandFumblin · 02/06/2014 18:25

They are simply saying that many names have class connotations. It doesn't matter if this is wrong or right, or if you like it or not, it is just a FACT.

No chocolate apparently even acknowledging the connotations is exactly the same as supporting the snobbery. It must be true because veryone keeps yelling it.

deadwitchproject · 02/06/2014 18:27

My North American cousin has a son named Braydon and he has a friend named Jayden. I always assumed it was a N American name until I noticed it was starting to become popular over here.

I would agree that it does have the connotations talked about earlier up thread. Although it is up to the OP as to whether it is a suitable name for her child, she has canvassed opinions about her choice, and those opinions are being expressed here.

ChocolateWombat · 02/06/2014 18:34

Fidelin....not quite sure if you are agreeing with me or not.

I think we need to be realists. The world is not as it should be and there are all kinds of prejudices. They may be wrong but we need to be aware of their existence.

After that, not is up to us what we do with that information. We can stand up to the world and deliberately give our child a name associated with something that is viewed negatively by certain groups, because we like it...or just to make a point. We can recognise the prejudice and carefully name our child in a neutral way to avoid these kind of issues. We can go for a middle ground.

Children have their name for ever. It might not be best to use it to make a political or class point.

Fidelin....not quite sure if you are agreeing with me or not.

I soooo totally am, as the teenagers say.

Especially that bit. Exactly what I've been saying for the last however many pages.

DollyWosits · 02/06/2014 18:40

Completely off topic...

Fideline a dolly Wotsit is a term for a ditsy young woman that was used in a Mike Leigh film. I think it was Life is Sweet.

I am not a Dolly Wotsit though. Confused

beatingwings · 02/06/2014 18:42

chocolate - I so agree. It's unfair to burden a child with a fight that belongs to the parent.

If those who want to champion chavvy names then they should change their own names by deed poll to Chardonnay and take on the battle themselves.

FidelineandFumblin · 02/06/2014 18:42

Oh i was thinking washing dolly....

FidelineandFumblin · 02/06/2014 18:43

(I met Mike Leigh - he was very nice)

Yep you mention the name Jayden and instantly INSTANTLY (a mere 484 posts later) you get the word 'chav' in response.

I have a chav name too, and was so fashionable that you could tell my age if you heard it.

I don't think my parents made a good choice.

ElleBellyBeeblebrox · 02/06/2014 18:51

Can't see the problem with Jayden myself, but then my dd has a hyphenated name that most of the MN massive look down on.
Can't see why people give a shit what other people choose to name their kids, as long as it's not piss flaps knob cheese or similar.

beatingwings · 02/06/2014 18:52

Because of my chav name I deliberately chose timeless classic names for my own children.

FidelineandFumblin · 02/06/2014 18:52

Chav is a vile word.

But I think you're rev counter has been going pretty high for a while now regardless of what has or hasn't actually been said usual. It seems a bit out of character TBH

"We have a GP at our surgery called Tracey.

A name does not define a person, the person defines the name."

Surely the very fact that you selected this example of a name shows that preconceptions exist, including yours? Confused

The example wouldn't work if you had said 'We have a GP at our surgery called Catherine', would it?

DogCalledRudis · 02/06/2014 19:03

Spero's posts are really inappropriate. Name might be not up to your taste, but its nice enough if its so popular.

I have NEVER had a case with a John, Anne, Richard, Elizabeth or Sarah.

Hardly surprising as these are the names of MY generation (44 years old). Children are not called John, Anne, Richard, Elizabeth or Sarah so commonly now.

I do not post half truths and evasions. I post my experience of the past 15 years from 1999 to current date.

I am a Sarah btw and I have never met another Sarah under 30. It fell out of the top ten names a long, long, long time ago.

Spero · 02/06/2014 19:06

Please tell me why my posts are inappropriate.

Why is inappropriate to have 15 years experience in a particular job.

Why is inappropriate to post about my experience.

Will anyone tell me why?

Spero · 02/06/2014 19:11

And will someone PLEASE tell me what my 'agenda' is?

I would love to know.
