Middle name for Plato

BottleRocket · 18/02/2014 20:04

We've decided on the name Plato for our baby son, due in two weeks. It's sort of like Arlo or Milo but less common. The only thing is we can't think of a good middle name.

Thanks in advance!

Plato is a fabulous name.

I simply adore classical Greek names.

Ptolemy is one of my potential boys names, you could definitely use a classic British name or stay with the Greek theme.

Plato Alexander
Plato Thaddeus
Plato Orpheus
Plato Zephyr
Plato Erasmus

Plato Edward
Plato Charles
Plato Gideon

Hi all,

Can we please remember that baby names are like bras, and while one might be really crap for you, it could be a perfect fit for someone else?

(Or in other words, I just made up that analogy to say that even if you don't like a name, please try not to berate someone else too much for picking it!)

Happy Sunday!

squoosh · 23/02/2014 13:34

Dear me, you're very easily impressed if Plato Pommes Frites tickles you so much.

I have decided to name my next child Mumsnet HQ I think it will go perfectly with our surname and will fit our child like a .............. glove.

Actually I think these threads can be really useful to hear what people will actually think before you name the child so honestly can actually be useful. If someone were to say my eldest child is 'Aristotleedna' then it is outrageous to comment but no so before the crime has been committed the name has been given.

I like Plato I would not call a child by the name but I have heard far worse and I would go with another traditional Greek name as the middle name.

I'm a teacher at a very ordinary comprehensive school and we have all sorts of weird and wonderful names. I think immigration has played a big part in that and people generally don't even question where names come from - they're just accepted. I can't imagine Plato would stand out in any way.

I genuinely don't see Plato getting any stick for his name - in fact I don't think the other children would even notice that it was out of the ordinary. It's not as if there are any bad associations to link it with, and to be honest it IS pretty similar to Milo and Arlo, at least in sound. The only people likely to judge would be other parents who haven't really experienced the new attitude to names and perhaps have quite old-fashioned ideas.

It's kind of growing on me actually. I imagine a Plato could be pretty cool.

I just asked my DH, who's also a teacher but usually very conservative with this sort of thing, and he agrees with me.

ZingSweetMango · 23/02/2014 14:22

Not easily impressed - a different sense of humour.

RussianBlu · 23/02/2014 18:07

I would say side splitting quite Squoosh but I have been mildly amused.

I think Plato is fab.
A few years ago Noah would have been considered "out there", but now every other baby boy I meet is called Noah.
But I would go for a middle name that is unlikely to be remarked upon, and love the suggestion of Alexander.

Misfitless · 23/02/2014 20:13

I'm doing a u-turn.

Originally I thought...well, I've posted what I thought, OP!

Now, the more I check on this post, the more I like it, and the less ridiculous it sounds.

I wasn't expecting to quite like it not hate it.

ThermoLobster · 23/02/2014 20:34

O P!!!!!!
Come back and tell us where you are at!
We chose a beautiful name for DD1. My nan's name. Not very out there but was not very common 4 years ago. Mother in law made a horrid face when we mentioned it. We didn't use it and I regret it.
As with others, it has grown in me as I have read the thread. If you are dead set on it, I hope people haven't put doubt in your had.
My DDs names have been totally ridiculed on mumsnet but they are lovely names and lovely girls. X
