Middle name for Plato

We've decided on the name Plato for our baby son, due in two weeks. It's sort of like Arlo or Milo but less common. The only thing is we can't think of a good middle name.

Thanks in advance!

If someone had said to me 20 years' ago, Phoenix would be used as a first name for a baby, I would have been astonished, but fashions change.

And children just accept one anothers names. Well they do in primary school...and I reckon there are so many immigrant families now, that unusual names in the UK are becoming more common.

My teen Ds mentioned a mate called Horace yesterday. I asked him if he'd like to be called Horace, he said no. I asked what about Cyril? he said yes! Hmm also Cecil (pronounced Seesel).

Personally, I wouldn't use Plato, but each to their own...no idea what would go well after it though.

Plato Merlin?

canyourearme · 19/02/2014 16:34

Pluto?

Quietattheback · 19/02/2014 16:34

Burma - you scoff but I know a Godspower and a Godgiven. I'm not joking.

What about Plato Tyler? I don't like either name but the juxtaposition of pretentious and chavy may have the happy effect of making Katie Hopkins spontainiously combust.

Nothing wrong with 'Nigel', MrsDavidBowie.. I think it's a perfect match as a middle name with Plato.

Plato Nigel

See?! Grin

SnakeyMcBadass · 19/02/2014 18:39

He will get called Plate for short. Plate. If this doesn't bother you, go for it.

RalphRecklessCardew · 19/02/2014 19:08

It's almost as bad as Hector. Almost.

peppinagiro · 19/02/2014 19:29

It's awful. The worst will be if he's not very bright - like a clumsy fat girl called Grace.

capsium · 19/02/2014 19:46
Sad

I have to say, the clumsy fat girl called grace could just turn out to surprise everyone. I hate to think of children dismissed.

capsium · 19/02/2014 19:47

^ I know this is light hearted, but suddenly felt very emotional about that.

Ooh can I have some Cake and Wine too? Drown my sorrows...

cookingenthusiast · 19/02/2014 19:54

I think Magnolia would be a lovely middle name

Plato Magnolia - all the kids in the playground would be envious Envy

thegreylady · 19/02/2014 19:56

I prefer Ptolomy which at least has a good nn Tolly.

bigkidsdidit · 19/02/2014 19:58

I love mumsnet :)

Maybe OP is a big touring car fan? In which case calling your child Plato is pretty much the equivalent of calling them Manchester United!

Nick?

bigkidsdidit · 19/02/2014 20:46

People keep saykng nick or pus. Is it pronounced platto then? I always thought it was playto.

TimeToThinkOfYourFuture · 19/02/2014 20:49

I know a 7 year old called Apollo... No one minds now they are used to it!

DaveMccave · 19/02/2014 21:07

I like it. I love a greek name.

Plato Tobias? Then you could call him To-To as a nickname which is ridiculously cute. I do like pet sounding nicknames for children though, I have an Antigone (Tiggy).

Pigeonhouse · 20/02/2014 11:07

I don't honestly see why Plato is any significantly less acceptable than Antigone, Penelope, Persephone, Calliope etc.

My NCT coffee morning group in London had a Jupiter, a Percy and an Ace, and I don't think anyone turned a hair.

Seriously? Jupiter and Percy?
