Below a certain (unspecified) age all Wombles are nameless; upon coming of age, a Womble chooses his or her name by looking through Great Uncle Bulgaria's large atlas until they find a name that suits them. Some (Bungo for example) "merely shut their eyes tight and point and hope for the best."

FunnysInLaJardin · 11/11/2013 11:39

Loughborough? Shepshed?

CruCru · 11/11/2013 17:15

Brittany is another area of France and a name.

Londongirl84 · 12/11/2013 04:14

Sienna

Pearlsaplenty · 12/11/2013 06:12

I've met a Calais and an Antalya before.

curlew · 12/11/2013 06:29

I know a Toulouse. Doesn't mean I should!

TheNunsOfGavarone · 12/11/2013 11:12

Toulouse Shock no Curlew you certainly shouldn't know one. It's fine for the town but the poor person, imagine all those "no time Toulouse" jokes and probably "louse" ones as well. What were the parents thinking of?

curlew · 12/11/2013 11:21

I don t know- but her brother is called G l i n t.

LBDD · 12/11/2013 11:25

Know two Indias and I think it's a beautiful name.

Cremolafoam · 12/11/2013 11:26

Jordan
Erin
Caledonia
Alba

Spaghettinetti · 12/11/2013 11:29

Just ignore anything negative on here Marli. Dare to be different! I certainly plan to! :-)

It's a shame you can't use Mali, because it's a lovely name. What about:

Athena
Larissa
Alinda
Oia
(All in Greece)

Persia
Troy
Alanya
Alexandria
Haifa
Pretoria
Nicosia

Sienna
Verona
Roma
Sicily
Sorrento
Sofia
Ankara
Vienna
Andorra
Montserrat
Valencia
Laval

Mai
Agra
Kerala
Khiva (Uzbekistan)

Nairobi
Nakuru
Naivasha
Mara
Sahara
Savannah

Atlanta
Georgia
Virginia
Albany

Teifi (Welsh river)
Avon
Somerset
Devon
Ives (after St. Ives)

Just a few ideas, but I'd go for something that meant something to me, perhaps somewhere you've been, or dreamed about visiting. Good luck!

Plenty of places names that people don't automatically think of as 'place names' when they hear them. DD shares her name with a city. The immediate reactions we get to her name are that it is very 'posh', not that it is a place name. Jordan, Alba, Troy, Savannah, Georgia - people don't immediately think of them as place names, do they?

BigBadWolefPlum · 12/11/2013 14:05

I don't think Somerset will be a very nice name for a baby.... nor Uzbekistan Hmm Haifa leads to Heiffer and could be problematic in future life

Bonsoir · 12/11/2013 14:16

France (very traditional girls' name in... France)
Fiji (I have a female cousin with this as a second name)
Nancy (an exquisitely beautiful town in France)
Brittany
Lorraine
Roma

Spaghettinetti · 12/11/2013 14:41

Big bad wolf, Khiva was the name I was suggesting, I was just pointing out that it's in Uzbekistan. And I was thinking of Somerset as in Somerset Maugham...

Ihatepeas · 12/11/2013 14:54

I know a little girl called London..

BigBadWolefPlum · 12/11/2013 18:32

Oh, sorry spaghetti- i really thought you meant Uzbekistan Grin it just didn't 'fit' never heard of somerset meaghum, shall have to google!

Summer is pretty- or maybe the portuguese language equivalent?

Khiva is nice but I think I prefer the Irish version - somethin like ciamh?

justhayley · 12/11/2013 23:11

Have you got any special connections to a place/country so the name has more meaning than just wanting the new Paris?

I love the name India, and quite like Kenya but probably wouldn't use it.
How about London. I'm a bit obsessed with the real housewife shows and one of them has a London which is quite cute

ancientbuchanan · 13/11/2013 17:52

If you want the new Paris, then Roma must be up the list. Or Milan ( nn Milly).

Palmyra
Boston
Montreal
Quebec
Alberta

Chicago
Louisiana
Nice
Cannes

Persis
Damask/Damascene

Olympia

onlyentropycomeseasy · 13/11/2013 18:07

Well, I don't think Africa or Egypt are any good, unless you perhaps have family links.

But there are a lot of lovely place names.

I would want Blythe for a daughter.
Sydney is pretty normal.
Geneva is normal and sounds nice.
Petra?
Victoria?
Georgia?
Florence?
Jordan (ruined IMO)
Calais
Marseilles
Clare (County)
Holland
Lisle (place in Illinois)
Canada
Austin
Aspen
Asia

Honestly, Katie Hopkins' daughter is India and I don't like it - reminds me of Indigo children. Petra, Lisle, Calais and Geneva are all nice without being ridiculous.

Layl77 · 13/11/2013 18:42

Bognor Regis , baby boggie
Hull
Staines

Further afield:
Kazakhstan (Stan)

Spaghettinetti · 14/11/2013 08:27

Oooo some more!

Iona
Skye
Elba

GrandstandingBlueTit · 14/11/2013 10:16

at a 'pair of Bristols'.

For the love of God, call the child Catarina, or something that passably sounds like a name.
