India and Florence were on the list for dd1 who is now 7. We went with something much more normal and surprisingly shes the only Lucy at school but 4 India's and two Florence' s along with 5 Freya's which was the other short list name.

NoAddedSuga · 10/11/2013 14:20

The problem with the baby names board is that if you dont like names that are the most common in your local nursing home then no one on here will like anything you suggest.

Florence
Martha
Alice
George

These are just some of the names i mean

Wuldric · 10/11/2013 14:24

Oh yes, I like all those names. Nothing wrong with a good Dorothy.

How about hyphenating random place names? Barcelona-Madrid, or Florence-Milan or Barking-Tooting?

Marli1980 · 10/11/2013 14:24

Thank you I do really like India, are you saying its too used now? Noaddedsuga I understand! But to purposely (?) be horrible is stange

Strange

Marli I was genuinely trying to help you, but you've decided I'm being mean.

Shakespeare would be a good place to look for place names.

I'll just bugger off then.

SconeForAStroll · 10/11/2013 14:27

I knew of a Vienna at university. I am afraid we ripped the piss dreadfully.

I think you just need to be really wary with such an 'unusual' name especially if there is no especial reason for it (such as birth nationality or place of conception).

Marli1980 · 10/11/2013 14:29

I understand, not something too unusual but not something really common, of course I would not want her to be a joke

Alice - Alice Springs
Ivory - make a change from Ebony
Polly (Polynesia)
Georgia

Cutteduppumpkin · 10/11/2013 14:29

Please don't use India, definitely over-used and a bit try hard.

Are there any places / Countries that have meaning to you? If English isn't your first language then what about using a place name from your national Country?

Wuldric · 10/11/2013 14:29

The thing is, ripping the piss mercilessly is what is going to happen with random place names. I am particularly enamoured of Barking-Tooting, but the OP thinks I am being mean (which ripping the piss can be construed as mean) so I will shut up.

Love Cobweb and Mustardseed though.

Marli1980 · 10/11/2013 14:32

Cutted up I am from brazil, I just wanted something different

There's an amazing place in Orkney called Twatt that I've always found hilarious! And then my brother named his budgie after it. Very embarrassing for him when Twatt had to go to the vet and the receptionist called Twatt Smith, to room 4 please (fake surname has been used to protect Twatt's true identity).

Anyway, is there a reason you want to call your child after a place/country? Some are just horrible, others are lovely. Do you have any ties to a certain area, or do you just like place names? Here's a link to loads and loads of place names.

EweHaveGoatToBeKiddin · 10/11/2013 14:42

Could you even just be more specific in the type of places names you're after? Does it include islands, mountains, rivers etc? i think you should narrow it down a bit to get better suggestions. 'Place names' can mean pretty much anything from Mars to 5 Coronation Street.

octopusinastringbag · 10/11/2013 14:44

If you are from Brazil then why not look for a nice place name in your home country? There are bound to be some lovely ones and it's a nod to your daughter's heritage.

EweHaveGoatToBeKiddin · 10/11/2013 14:45

Here's a few from my above link that i like for girls:

Adelaide
Florence
Savannah
Sierra
Catalina
Eden

Cremolafoam · 10/11/2013 14:48

If you are from Brazil what about Rio or Ria

youarewinning · 10/11/2013 14:48

I know an Aisia pronounced like Asia.

Marli1980 · 10/11/2013 14:52

No reason just that I thought it could be something different because after looking through baby name book I have nothing. I should look over brazil!

SconeForAStroll · 10/11/2013 14:57

I was having a quick look - there is a beautiful place called Bonito which is presumably the male version of Benita and I will try not to hum the madonna song La Isla Benita

Pipa?

Marli1980 · 10/11/2013 14:59

Benits is nice
How do you think of Teresa?

OP posts:
kelda · 10/11/2013 15:03

I know a couple of Adelaides, and a Chelsea-Queen (different, more creative spelling).

Anyone mentioned Santiago? Montserrat?

youarewinning · 10/11/2013 15:07

Just seen your from Brazil. I know a girl called Rio.
