Worst one I heard recently was a woman yelling "Flops! Flops! Flopsie! Flopseeeeeeeee!!!". I was expecting a dog or lost rabbit to come bounding up, but no, it was a girl of about 7 to.

She calls her child "Flops"?!?!?!

NK2b1f2 · 30/08/2012 16:59

Eco That would probably be a nickname for Florence. I know a girl with that name who's usually called Flossie...

Shortbutsosweet · 30/08/2012 17:02

Lol blue shoes!
Melina! A name that makes nurses run heeehee.
I know a unique and antique sisters .

WoodlandHills · 30/08/2012 17:03

Oh and how could I forget!! There is a Maverick (boy) and a Corvette (girl) in ds's class

NellyJob · 30/08/2012 17:03

did you know that 'melina' means something like 'dirty squat' in Polish? hehe

xmasevebundle · 30/08/2012 17:09

there was a Twinkle in the maternity ward when DS1 was born.

5madthings · 30/08/2012 17:12

i like Savannah :)

each to their own, one of my ds's has a name that often gets slated on mnet, but we like it and so does he.

i also like storm and tallulah and a few others that have been mentioned on this thread actually.

cheyenne was mentioned and i have a cousin called that, they live in oklahoma and its a fairly normal, almost common name there, she is a lovely girl (well young woman now)

i know a blue and a nemo, both lovely boys, also a Beau (girl) who is nice as well and we even knew a Zebedee for a while, he was a fabulous little boy and his parents were nice as well.

NK Flops for Florence I can sort of get, but she definitely called her Flopsie in full. There were 3 sisters whose full names I heard: all ended in ..sie/...sy and she shortened them by just knocking the ie/y off.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 30/08/2012 17:19

Why on earth would anyone be astounded at the name T-Jay Confused
Levi is hardly a modern name. It's biblical ffs.
Tallulah is a real name.
L-a is a racist urban myth
Sulumi was probably Salome
Lots of the other names are common in Africa e.g Precious and Lucky 'yelled in Asda' are NN.

Why is MN so obsessed with what other people call therein children?

mignonette · 30/08/2012 17:19

Runawaysimba

Maybe that child called Sativa had parents who liked a smoke? Sativa is one of two varieties of Marijuana plants. The other is Indica. Sativa plants produce marijuana with a more 'energising' effect whereas Indica has a more mellow result.

And no, I'm not a regular blow-hard. Have to know this stuff because of the increase in admissions of young cannabis smokers on psych units these days.

AndiMac · 30/08/2012 17:20

I went to school with a girl whose name was Secret. I never thought anything about it at the time, being too young to think much other than it was a bit odd, but then as I got older, I kept thinking what kind of baggage are you giving your kid with that name?

LKirk · 30/08/2012 17:20

True shockers, Spike's parents could be Spike Milligan fans but I don't think Spike was Mr Milligan's real name was it? For this poor lad it is!

bronzeMedal · 30/08/2012 17:22

Why not flopsie as a nickname for Florence
I have a James who I call jimbobaroony
It's not a shortening. Its an extension of Jimbob which came from Jim. I wonder what I'll move onto next

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 30/08/2012 17:24

Why is he a poor lad?
It's a name.
It at not have been SM's real name but it's the one he used all his adult life.

So if little spike doesn't like it he can do the opposite and call himself Hamish or Noah or any of the other MN approved names.
If he wants to e a high court judge or a lawyer of course

mignonette · 30/08/2012 17:24

Spike is a fantastic name! I love it. Spike Lee? Spike Jonze? Very cool 'namesakes'.

Frontpaw · 30/08/2012 17:39

Spike Lees real name is Shelton Jackson Lee... Ok so that's not much better.

Spike Jonez was little Adam Spiegel.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 30/08/2012 17:39

tbh I couldn't give a stuff if a name is "real" or not.

Each to their own.

Has anyone trotted out the high court judge bollocks thing yet?

Frontpaw · 30/08/2012 17:41

Terence Milligan...

George Orwell was Eric.

Frontpaw · 30/08/2012 17:43

Wasn't there a judge in the states called Cupcake or something like that?

BalloonSlayer · 30/08/2012 17:43

I did read of some parents calling their child Unique. And when he/she started school there was another one in their class. Grin

Frontpaw · 30/08/2012 17:44

Nooooooo!
Sam? - here miss!
Anne? - here miss!
Mary? - here miss!
Unique? - which one miss?

Frontpaw · 30/08/2012 17:45

Oh come on, wouldn't you do a double take if you got a card through for an appointment with Dr Sweetcheeks Malone?

Zara1984 · 30/08/2012 18:14

The mum I know that called her DD Bentley Princess is a lawyer Grin
