DH and I both teachers and looking for quirky names!

My DH and I are both teachers and don't want a name that will remind us of any pupil in particular- so we need something quirky/unusual but not totally "out there"!
DS is 14 months and called Logan- a name which is unusual but not in the realms of wacky and everyone seems to love it.
DC2 due in August and we don't know the sex.
Any ideas?
We've come up with a couple:
Blake
Riley
Noah

Violet
Scarlet (I don't like but DH does!)
Summer (too corney for an August baby??)

Leonora

Eloise

Naturally281110 · 17/02/2012 20:55

Oooooh- loving Hendrix but is it too "out there??"
Selks- Tara is a goodun. Not sure how to pronounce Elidiah??
Magicmayhem- I got very excited by Nell but DH gace me "the look" which means nope
Pathankhanswitch- lovely meaning but I'm concerned its a bit too unusual and may be one of those names that people struggle to spell or pronounce- and if this DC is anything like my DS it wont be a beautiful voice, more a high pitched screetch 99% of them time! Wink

Loving Floyd, Blythe and Jake (which another friend has pinched!). I like Elle and DH hasnt pulled a face yet.....
I've always liked Jasper but it makes DH giggle (no idea why i think it's a cool name!)

Just googled Seth Armstrong- I see the issue!

DH has gone all misty eyed and nostalgic as apparantly Leon was his bestfriend at Primary School- the things I'm learning tonight!

Your boys names are not great, sorry.

If you are on the 'trendy boys names' thing:

Sonny
Rudy
Evan
Ethan
Vinnie

??

Your girls names are awful! Violet is incredibly zeitgeisty in a not-good way. Summer and Scarlet are not good.

Ava is lovely and Evan too- got an "hmmmmm" response from DH so need to let them simmer with him for a bit!

Can't believe how long our list of "possibles" is now! Thank you so much everyone! Grin

If you are a teacher and want to avoid names you will come across, then stay away from

Evelyn / Evie / Eva / Ava - I'm guessing you have to be a secondary teacher as it seems like every other girl is one of those variants!!

Noah, Finn, Dylan - whilst not on the Eve... scale, definitely becoming more popular and you will be teaching them soon.

Try the office of national statistic name list and look on the complete list for names outside the top 300. It's hard... I'm married to a teacher so can sympathise with the problem!

pressingbuttons · 18/02/2012 01:21

How about Robin/Robyn if you're thinking superheroes -whether you have a DS2 or DD?

Lois was also a good suggestion; DH vetoed that Sad and in keeping with the superhero thang!
Otherwise;

Ciaran
Angus
Louis
Markus
Patrick

Bridget
Gabrielle
Kirsty,
Lucy
Nina
Zara

Or how how about Elena (Spanish spelling rather than Eleanor) sort of prounced 'Ey-len-a'

When I hear Harmony; I think of my gran's old hairspray and the old advert; 'H H Harmony'. Urmm nope.

startail · 18/02/2012 02:03

You can't have Gabrielle if your teachers, she dyed her hair green and got expelled.

Echo
Bryony
Bethan
Bridget
Amira (I'm not sure how she spelt it)
Amber - I love
Sally
Zoe
Gemma

I like Violet and don't know any
Thea

theseventhdwarf · 18/02/2012 02:22

I love Levi or Noah for a boy
Or Ella bonnie or bria for a girl

Hi everyone. Wow! Am totally overwhelmed by all the suggestions- thank you so much for your time, thoughts and suggestions Thanks [havibg emotional hormonal moment....]
You've listed well over 80 different girls names and 70 boys!
DH and I have been through the list and come up with the following names to chew over (doesn't mean we both like the name but one of us did!) I know some names may raise a few eyebrows and maybe aren't necessary filling our original criteria!!

Boys:
Blake (still there!)
Riley
Noah (getting popular I know but can't shake it off yet)
Byron
Oscar (same as Noah)
Harley
Roan
Blaize (DH LOVES this one Hmm
Xavier (have pointed out Xmen theme to DH which made him even more determined!)
Ruben

Girls:
Violet
Anwen (or similar sounding....)
Viola
Eleanor
Bryony
Eliza
Faith
Fleur
Lara
Lila
Sienna
Indigo
Harmony
Celeste
Tamsin
Fern
Clara
Skye
Imogen

As you can see our short list is, errrr, rather long still!
