DH and I both teachers and looking for quirky names!

My DH and I are both teachers and don't want a name that will remind us of any pupil in particular- so we need something quirky/unusual but not totally "out there"!
DS is 14 months and called Logan- a name which is unusual but not in the realms of wacky and everyone seems to love it.
DC2 due in August and we don't know the sex.
Any ideas?
We've come up with a couple:
Blake
Riley
Noah

Violet
Scarlet (I don't like but DH does!)
Summer (too corney for an August baby??)

Milly!! I like that! Tilly is the cats name which I love and Milly sounds nice too (don't get hurt feelings countess!). Maybe Millicent when she's being a posh grown up and Milly to her friends...? Hmmmmm

Hero could be a big name to live up to! I love eating honey but never considered it as a name....(more pondering)

I would stay away from Riley I think you will see an influx of them in the next few years. How about Romily or Anna for a girl. Ellis for a boy.

MrsKitty · 18/02/2012 18:08

There are at least 4 Millies in YR/Y1 at DS's school at the moment. All shortened from Amelia rather than Millicent though...

hundreds of Millies and Finlays round here. I like Blake.

thereistheball · 18/02/2012 20:02

OP - Riley is also a Scottish surname, like Logan.

missmapp · 18/02/2012 20:29

I've taught a Lena who was lovely and I really love the name , but I also taught a Boudeccia, who lived up to her name!!

Louplet · 18/02/2012 20:31

DH is liking Electra- the whole superhero thing again!
Boudeccia?? Wow! I think we'd be pretty much guaranteed there wont be too many of those around!
Still pondering Riley but people might think we've choosen a surname theme on purpose!
Raven and Romily got an instant "nope" from DH.....

If he's into superheroes how about Selina for a girl (or Kyle for a boy?)
If he's a Batman fan he'll get the reference... ;)

MrsKitty · 19/02/2012 09:52

How about Austin? (And as you're both teachers, i'll show my workings Grin.
Awst = August in Welsh
Awstin = name derived from Awst. Also a version of Austin (so says the webpage I just came across).

Or Vaughn?

Electra is dreadful - sorry OP's DH and Louplet!

You really seem quite keen on Riley. I prefer it for a girl over a boy though, at a push.

You're going to have to return to this thread in august and let us know the outcome - I've become quite invested in this Grin. (Not very well this weekend so not been able to do much else!)

Naturally281110 · 19/02/2012 10:06

Hmmmm frikadellen am liking Milla- that seems quite unusual. I did suggest Kestrel and Lark to DH who thought I'd gone bonkers and was just making names up. Talon (bird theme here!) got a similar response.
chateauneuf am liking Selina not too sure on Kyle as Jeremy Kyle (who don't get me wrong I've got kind of addicted too since being on mat leave with my DS).
mrskitty I waved the short list infront of DH over breakfast this morning and Riley seemed to fall flat so it's been crossed off- even asked DS who at all of 14 months shook his head do its now a no from all 3 of us! I like Austin and suggested it early on but that got a no too- I think it sounds terribly posh if you say it with the right accent and someone called Austin could probably grow up to be prime minister! Chewing over Vaughn. Have put my foot down firmly with Electra or Elektra as DH wants to spell it! Hope you feel better soon!

Starting to think maybe we should just call it "baby". I seem to remember that was acceptable in Dirty Dancing.....
.......or my DS loves Elmo at the moment

OK, OK, since I am not having any more I will give permission for you to have my favourite name.

Polly. It pains me to give it away, but someone has to use it.Smile

Naturally281110 · 19/02/2012 10:16

Polly is a great name but unfortunately with our surname sounds like a cartoon character or a doll for young girls! But thanks though! :)
