Whgat would you say are the pop 10 current "chav" girls names?

I know people here generally don't like the term "chav" being used but this is not meant to cause offence and is for a bit of research for a friend who is writing a short fiction piece for a competition and is looking for names to base a couple of her characters on.

She's not really looking at the "Sharon" and "Tracy" type names but more the sort of names that are in vogue at the moment.

Any ideas gratefully received.

"Emily"

A name I've always seen as very middle class. Tends to be borne by women who were brought up to be very nice little girls, dancing ballet etc.

"I'm fully aware that my daughter's name (Megan) is a Welsh diminutive of Margaret. "

I was brought up to believe it was a diminutive of Margaret Anne (of course I'd never heard before MN that using a first and middle name together was chavvy). In any case, it's been used as just Megan for decades.

"I like ana sounding names. "

They tend to be unwieldy 3 or 4 syllable ones though don't they?

Gwen

DD's name is Clarissa... so, maybe? ;)
But there's also Anna, Linda, Mia, Flora... Thomasina!!

Btw:

The really american type names are the ones i would label 'chav. That kind of thing really makes me think 'oh dear, how working class'

What an awful comment...

Gwenhwyfar · 31/12/2016 12:27

1horatio - I meant the 'ina' ones being long ones, not any name ending with 'a'.

1horatio · 31/12/2016 12:34

Oh,..

Well, Thomasina ;) Leontina, Flurina, Carina, Josephina, Georgina.... love names like that.

They are admittedly a bit unwieldy, but that's why we have nicknames ;) Nobody actually calls DD Clarissa...

Jesus, yet another thread that just needs to be deleted so it doesn't keep being revived by fuckwits who can't read a date.

Bianca - I knew one once - lived up to all expectations... had several babies at a young age to continue the legacy.

Tegan is a welsh word and an awful name.
Regan is a girl's name from Shakespeare.

Something doesn't feel right about categorizing names into "snobby" or "chavvy". Working class, middle class, upper middle class etc name trends obviously do occur. My biggest turn off is more when a name is everywhere which happens with "snobby" and "chavvy" names.

I think ultimately go with a name you really like. Halle Berry probably wouldn't be Halle Berry if her mum had consulted mumsnet first.

87Callista · 13/04/2020 10:22

Someone just mentioned Bianca as "chavvy" and see I instantly thought of actress Bianca Lawson who probably wouldn't be seen as "chavvy"
So I guess a lot of it boils down to personal experience of a name.

@gallicgirl

perhaps your friend could look at the ONS statistics for ideas? There are some beauties at the bottom of the rankings.

It's difficult to label as chav/middle class/ wannabe because trends change so quickly. I'm sure there are lots of mothers who named their children things like Jack, Lily, Ruby etc a few years ago when they weren't so popular and believed they were classics, but now they are so popular they're becoming unpopular IYKWIM.

I named my beautiful daughter after a posh character in a TV show....Kimberley. In my defence it was 35 years ago before it became known because of you know who...
