I know people here generally don't like the term "chav" being used but this is not meant to cause offence and is for a bit of research for a friend who is writing a short fiction piece for a competition and is looking for names to base a couple of her characters on.

She's not really looking at the "Sharon" and "Tracy" type names but more the sort of names that are in vogue at the moment.

Any ideas gratefully received.

my friends daughter recently represented some one who had called their daughter chlamydia because they thought it sounded like a nice name !!!

UnquietDad · 22/01/2011 16:33

Blimey. Maybe it grows on you.

swanandduck · 22/01/2011 16:47

Babies being named after the place they were conceived eg Phoenix, Paris.

Names with 'different' spellings eg Aimee, Rebekkah.

Makey up Americany names eg Madison, Tori

Jade is also pretty chavvy.

"That kind of thing really makes me think 'oh dear, how working class'"

What a wanker you are.

PigTail · 22/01/2011 16:51

NOthing make me think "how working class" but I do go Hmm at names with mai/mae stuck on the end. There is no need. HoLly, Millie, Ella, Lucy are fine names in themselves without sticking Mai/Mae or sometimes May on the end.

Paris isn't really a place name. It's a good classical name after the prince who carried off Helen thus starting the Trojan Wars.

gallicgirl · 22/01/2011 17:24

perhaps your friend could look at the ONS statistics for ideas? There are some beauties at the bottom of the rankings.

It's difficult to label as chav/middle class/ wannabe because trends change so quickly. I'm sure there are lots of mothers who named their children things like Jack, Lily, Ruby etc a few years ago when they weren't so popular and believed they were classics, but now they are so popular they're becoming unpopular IYKWIM.

10 chavtastic names
.,girls

1 charelene
2 charmaine
3 bailey (its a drink ffs!)
4 teigan

5 shannon ( river )
6 morgan ( and coke)
7 tyler ( its a job)

8 regan (an ex president) 9 sahara (dessert)
10 any boys name thats been cuitsiefied (charlie , bobbi, eddie ect ).

What makes a name chavy is a number of many things. Overuse , not understanding the meaning and bastardising the spelling are almost standard requirements.
One mother i know called her child sahara because it sounds exotic. Dito for another whos dd is named asia. Both dc are caucasion whos parents have never travelled further than blackpool.
Uber-chavy is to name child after drinks cars conception points or brands.

"Names with 'different' spellings eg Aimee, Rebekkah"

Aimee is a standardised spelling, and Rebekah is actually the proper spelling - "Rebecca" is the anglicsed version Grin

Now you see the names I associate with "Chavvy" parents are mostly in the top 100 names.......

Ripeberry · 22/01/2011 17:32

Tegan is actualy a Welsh name, nothing to do with Americans Hmm

Bailey, that is VERY chavy!

swanandduck · 22/01/2011 17:39

Maybe Baroque, but you know what I mean. Hollie, Nikki and so on.

Onimolap - I dont think that's why people call girls Paris.Grin

onimolap · 22/01/2011 17:45

Perhaps not knowing the origins of the name is a marker?

Even though I know that names do move between the sexes, I'm not keen on giving a child a name associated with the other sex - so I don't like eg Paris for a girl, or Regan or Cruz for a boy.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/01/2011 18:04

Madison isn't a made up American name either, it's a surname that was also used as a first name for BOYS (well it is a 'son of' name!) for many, many years.

Madison can be found on several males in my family tree, going back as far as the 17th century.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/01/2011 18:41

Valpollicella just realised that when I came back to the thread. Blush

ominolap don't know if it has been confirmed yet, sorry.

MissQue · 22/01/2011 18:45

Oi! My dd is Charlotte, it's a good, traditional name and not chavvy in the least!

Humph!

droves · 22/01/2011 18:45
