My 4 year old has just ordered me to crochet more of his minion lol. I was showing my mother in law last night who knits and crochets and I taught her about magic circles! She had never done one before. She just normally makes blankets.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a really pretty, chunky, easy blanket? I am going to need a project that's portable if my hospital referral doesn't give good news. I've been referred under the 2 week pathway for suspected cancer. That's the first time I've used that word and it's scary. I need a distraction.

lazylinguist · 13/08/2021 09:36

Awww is it your birthday today, @itsme? If so, a very happy birthday to you!

@cookiemonster5 Flowers Brew Cake Fingers all crossed that you get good news. The waiting must be awful. I had a bit of a scare a while back and it was literally all I could think about until tests came back negative. Sending good vibes your way.

I forget - are you a knitter as well as a crocheter? I've only made fairly detailed crochet blankets with lots of different stitches, but I've got a pattern for a super simple chunky knitted one.

@lazylinguist I do both. And cross stitch and diamond painting too. I would rather crochet though since it's new and exciting and quicker to see progress with.

sophs29 · 13/08/2021 09:42

Oooh tea and cake 😍 lovely jubbly! This is definitely my happy place!

Thinking of you @cookiemonster5 💐

itsme · 13/08/2021 09:46

@lazylinguist it was yesterday, I spent an hour upset because I'm nearer to 40 than 30 and then the lack of cake just escalated it 😂 such a drama queen. But today is a new day! I'm awaiting a delivery from deramores for some of their new essentials dk- I have the studio DK but I find it splits easily when working with it. I have some lovely soft cotton DK that I got from hobby craft that I don't know what to do with- but also have a birthday voucher from there that I want to spend on wool!

@cookiemonster5 I hope it's good news for you, sending love.

MerylSqueak · 13/08/2021 09:49

Happy unbirthday@itsme

@cookiemonster5 I plan to knit this one day although I hate paying for patterns. Is that the sort of thing you're after. I do endless throw/ blanket free pattern searches on Ravelry so let me know if you don't like it and I will have a look at what else I have found.

Argh, I've run out of yarn for a project that's already overdue - the baby is 1 month old already!

@cookiemonster5 - involves having to sew up at the end but a crochet project that's made up of squares/hexagons is nice and portable

lazylinguist · 13/08/2021 10:02

I quite like this one @cookiemonster5 Or this one

I've downloaded the first one @lazylinguist thank you. I need something to focus on to distract me.

lazylinguist · 13/08/2021 11:11

I like the tassels Smile. And the colours. My shawl is supposed to have tassels - I think I'm a bit of a tassel convert. Grin

@itsme happy birthday for yesterday.

Those gaps when you start a row with a chain are normal. They are so annoying. You can do a stitch in the same place but you'll end up with wavy edges. I did test all the different ways I could find of starting a row to avoid them but can't remember which was best Blush
I did post on whichever number thread we were on at the time about it but it was a while ago.

itsme · 13/08/2021 11:38

Thank you @CrochetBug it's really frustrating me I just want it to be perfect as I'm making it for a gift.

CrochetBug · 13/08/2021 11:55

Found the photos @itsme. Don't know if its any help to you.

Sorry @itsme. I didn't realise you needed crochet.

lucysmam · 13/08/2021 18:00

@itsme happy birthday for yesterday - I totally understand the lack of cake thing! I had to mention several million times that I didn't have one after being told not to bake with the kids.

Anyhow; what stitch are you using? I'm using hdc (htc in UK terms I think?) On two WIP's & have found that ch1 then an hdc straight into that first stitch without skipping one gives a nice edge.

I'm not sure about reducing the chains & stitching straight into the first stitch on a US dc/uk tc yet but bought the yarn for my friend's gloves earlier so will try it when I start them over the weekend and report back.

Yarn shop woman was nicer today which is good because we checked what Boyes stock & they surprised me with an EPIC selection! If she hadn't been nice, I was going there instead.

@cookiemonster5 hoping for the best outcome for you 🤞I like the tassles on lazy's blanket link.

tizwoz, how frustrating! Hopefully you can get what you need soon ish?

itsme · 13/08/2021 18:12

@lucysmam I'm using uk tr edged around the front and back with uk dc and then around the cuffs. I usually use a local lady for my yarn but deramores had an offer on this week for their new essentials DK- which has arrived and feels nice.

Hope everyone has had a nice day xxx

lucysmam · 13/08/2021 18:15

I wonder if reducing the turning chains by 1 then stitching straight into the first stitch would reduce the gappy look of the turning chain. I'll try on the gloves and see.

lucysmam · 14/08/2021 18:15

Unsuccessful crochet day here - I tested out the turning chains thing & wasn't happy with it so frogged the gloves in their entirety & will start again tomorrow.

I did make another water balloon though . & I'm going to do another couple of rows of my jumper when I've had a shower.

How's everyone's weekend going? :)

sophs29 · 14/08/2021 19:57

Aww hope the jumper goes better than the gloves @lucysmam sometimes I have days where just nothing goes right!

I'm about to sit down and crochet some more socks, I've done some sewing today, two wrap skirts for my niece, a drawstring toy bag for my nephew and a large pencil case type thing for my mum to store all her 'go-to' supplies! So I've had a productive day really, all in between playdoh and sandpit fun with one DS and supervising my other DS who has learnt to walk just after 9months old 😱

lucysmam · 14/08/2021 20:00

Aw, I bet he's into everything now Sophs Grin. Dd2 didn't learn to walk until she was 18mo; it was frustrating all round!

I loved our sandpit when we were little. Have fond memories of playing for hours with the neighbours kids :)

sophs29 · 14/08/2021 20:31

Yes he definitely is @lucysmam I need eyes in my arsehole 😂😂 My other DS learnt a couple of weeks before his first birthday so I wasn't really expecting my second to learn quite yet haha!

We love building in the sandpit, I'm hoping they'll be crafty like me too! (In the artistic way, not in a cunning way) 😂

CrochetBug · 15/08/2021 14:04

Apparently today is granny square day! Conveniently I've just finished a square. Grin

DS who has learnt to walk just after 9months old

Shock Mine were super lazy physically Grin - dd didn't crawl until she was 1, never mind walk! Ds wasn't much quicker. They both talked really early- I guess they figured why bother moving when you can ask someone else to get stuff for you?!

sophs29 · 15/08/2021 15:28

Wow @CrochetBug that's so pretty!

@lazylinguist haha definitely no need to be moving around when you can tell/boss people 😂 hope your camping trip is going well and the weathers been good for you!
