Unlike you, I'm not really a person who places much significance on physical objects. That sounds like it could be a good thing, but actually I often think it means I take my possessions for granted and don't always look after them well. In a way, knitting and crochet have made me more inclined to appreciate and look after things, as I have more of a sense of the effort, materials and sometimes affection that can go into making some of them.

Sounds like we are opposite extremes! I think there’s a balance to be had, I certainly put way too much emphasis on things and I’m trying to get it under control now whilst I still live at home so I don’t become a hoarder once I have my own place. But obviously you also want to take care of your stuff like you say.

I must say it does slightly irk me when I see my sister and nieces being really casual and clumsy with stuff I’ve made, they don’t always appreciate the effort (and money) that’s gone into it.

MerylSqueak · 27/06/2021 09:53

Speaking of appreciating the time and effort that goes into making something, do any of you often start things and frog them really quickly because you don't like the look of them? I started three scarves yesterday because I wanted to do something quick but abandoned t hem all because I thought I would not like the finished project enough even though they were quite nice. I started making a cardi for a teddy instead and I'm not sure I'll carry on because I'm just doing it because I got fed up.

@petridishmysteryI think it sounds very possible you will be over him when you cast off the last stitch. Sometimes the mind catches onto these little markers as a way of helping itself

lazylinguist · 27/06/2021 10:24

No I never do that, MerylSqueak. I almost always spend ages pondering over what project to make, and I rarely choose anything just because it's quick. In fact I'm the opposite - I often choose things that are overly difficult and time-consuming for my skill level! Actually, come to think of it, I've hardly ever totally frogged anything! I do sometimes put something on tye back burner for donkey's years and then eventually come back to it though.

OP posts:
petridishmystery · 27/06/2021 10:32

@MerylSqueak not for ages but I have definitely done this! There’s a project sat in a drawer that I’m not even sure what it’s supposed to be (maybe a cushion) but I can’t even frog it because that yarn doesn’t frog, I’d have to throw it away. So I need to either pick it back up or just bin it (cheap yarn so not a massive issue)

I hope I will be over him! Tbh at this point I don’t even know how much is actually about him as a person and how much is just because I’m still on my own and don’t have anyone else to focus on 🤷🏼‍♀️ Feeling a lot better this morning tho!

CrochetBug · 27/06/2021 11:53

(((Hugs))) @petridishmystery. I'm exactly the same. I was making DS1 a blanket that was the same pattern as one my bf had. I've got half a baby blanket for the baby I hoped we would have. I've got yarn to make another blanket for the imaginary baby.

It's all at the back of the cupboard and I can't look at it. Other than ds1s blanket. I do bits of that occasionally.

It's been 19 months and I feel like I'll never be whole again, even though I know I will. So be kind.

I'm also always frogging projects. No point making something I don't want/or like.
Mum started making a top about 5 years ago. Then didnt knit/crochet for ages. She dithered about it recently and I told her there was no point finishing it if she wouldn't wear it, my SIL and I are both bigger than her so it wouldn't fit us. And my nieces won't be that big for at least 10 years. So she frogged it and crocheted a shawl instead.

Anyway. Im still working away at things despite having no crojo. Or mojo. Or anything Jo. Just finished these shorts for lounging around at home in.

They look so soft and comfortable, and such pretty colours, @CrochetBug!
Glad you're feeling better today, @petridishmystery.

I'm sanding and painting in the bathroom today. Looking forward to my yarn delivery in the next few days! I also added a nice wooden crochet hook in a size I don't have, to take me up to the free delivery threshold.

petridish, I get what you mean about finishing meaning you're over your ex. I used to find writing things down, then destroying the paper I'd used so it could never be seen again, quite useful for the same sort of effect. Obviously don't destroy what you're making but I agree it'll probably close that 'door' for you :)

lucysmam · 27/06/2021 15:59

I didn't realise there was another page 🤦‍♀️

@CrochetBug what sort of yarn did you make your shorts from? I keep seeing pics of crocheted shorts but I don't tend to wear shorts, even though I like the idea of them & there are some lovely ones about.

I've decided the blanket is too big now to haul out when dd2's about wanting to do stuff. I've managed 1.5 rows today in between ironing, feeding Errol, baking, starting another experiment 🙄 don't really feel I've achieved much.

I'm going to swatch for the wrap cardi in the pic tonight - it's a vintage pattern from Etsy & I'm not 100% confident on the hook sizes so will just see what gets me closest from what I have. I ordered this yarn from Deramores for it, so I hope it looks good!

I can't post pics from two locations at the same time 🙄

This yarn.

@lucysmam that yarn is a gorgeous colour I am doing a jumper with a similar colour main colour.

Its my birthday tomorrow and my dp wanted to get the local wool shop to build me a basket of yarn. I am so glad I asked what he was getting me. I had to explain you can't just buy £x amount of wool. I need to pick a pattern and go from there, otherwise I likely won't have enough of the same type of wool. I am sure tho the owner would have told him this if he'd asked. I don't know what I want to knit next, I am debating a cabled jumper.

lazylinguist · 27/06/2021 16:56

I really like cable stuff, but I'm just not very good at it! I had a clearout in my Ravelry favourites yesterday and it was full of cable jumpers I've never made Grin.

God I'm so bored with bloody painting, I want to knit! Actually I want to start my new knitting project. Hurry up yarn delivery!

Scoobygang7 · 27/06/2021 16:59

@lazylinguist I've messed up a number of times on the simple jumper I am doing. So I am nervous of cables, but they look so pretty and I want to try lol. Hope your delivery comes soon.

CrochetBug · 27/06/2021 17:09

@lucysmam its king Cole beaches. They are so soft and comfy but too sheer for wearing in public Grin lots of others in the tester group used cotton and it made them thicker and less see through, but i wanted something thin to wear at home.

Myshitisreal · 27/06/2021 17:55

I've bought a cable hoody cardigan pattern (crochet) which has an accompanying video for the cables is that's helpful?

Scoobygang7 · 27/06/2021 18:18

@myshitisreal I can't crochet to save my life. I've tried granny squares and ended up with a wonky circle. Thank you though I am hunting on a few free pattern sites but haven't yet decided which to do.

lucysmam · 27/06/2021 21:34

I've got this far with my gauge swatch & am about half an inch over with my 16sts, using the 5mm hook that's suggested. I'm going to frog & start again with a 4.5 hook in the morning, I think that'll fix it. I don't mind if it comes up a little shorter than the finished size stated, which I think it might as my rows measure correctly as they are - it'll be worn over a vest top anyway.

I'm really pleased with my choice of colour though. (So are both girls 🙄...unfortunately for them, I'm working from my own measurements so don't think it'll fit them Grin )

Started my Coffee Shop Wrap! Quite liking the yarn - it certainly gives great stitch definition.

lazy I love that orange colour.

lazylinguist · 29/06/2021 18:50

It's called Goldenrod, InTheNight. It's a bit out of my greige comfort zone colour-wise Grin.

lucysmam · 30/06/2021 12:16

I'm debating a wider tie for my jackety top. I'm not sure of the best way to attach a couple of belt loops for it - any suggestions? I'm considering just using needle & thread 🤔

tizwozliz · 30/06/2021 20:16

Last day at work today until October so should finally have time for some crochet

lucysmam · 30/06/2021 20:39

Ooh, I'm counting the days for the summer hols tizwoz! 11 whole, entire, days to go 🥳. However, there are also only 11 days until dd2 is no longer a primary school child, & that makes me a bit sad really. She's been my shadow at work for years.

Anywho...would one of you translate the bit marked with orange brackets, please? I'm not sure whether to decrease both front edge and armhole on rows 1 & 3, or on row 2 of that bit Confused

lucysmam · 30/06/2021 20:39

Balls...forgot pic 🙄 I'm good at that Grin

lucysmam · 30/06/2021 21:03

Never mind, I worked it out. I need to decrease by 5 in total so 1 & 3 need me to do both sides.
