Am going to order the Animal Magic book from Amazon. It looks like it would be nicer to do with markers for brighter colours. These are recommended in the Amazon reviews. Are they worth it?

Thanks!

Joining!!

I went to The Range this morning and bought a book, some felt pens, and some colouring pencils.

The book is published by "Deco Time" and just called "Adults colouring book" with 160 good quality pages for £2.99 (I can't find a link to it anywhere) but they had a whole display of books, there was a good selection to choose from.

Pens are branded "Manuscript colour creative", 12 pens in each for £2.99 and I got a pack of fineliners and a slightly broader tipped pack. The pencils are metallic but at the moment it's all about the felt tips.

I am hoping that if I keep them by the side of the sofa, it might distract me from snacking and give me something to do.

That's lovely, testa!

Sounds like a plan, bantamgirl :)

OwlAtEase · 24/07/2015 08:03

They have arrived!! They are so shiny and pretty and new, I kind of don't want to touch them!

I need pencil advice, o wise colourers ! I've been using a mixture of cheapie ones I bought in a French supermarket, and the Faber Castel ones in the red cardboard box. The French ones are made of synthetic wood so sharpen beautifully, but the leads are hard and a bit rubbish to use. The Faber ones are lovely to use, but the wood casing jams on the sharpener and snaps off in big chunks. Please someone tell me what pencils to buy that won't bankrupt me, but also won't make me cry when I try to sharpen them !

Bearfrills · 24/07/2015 09:21

I got some from WH Smith that sharpen nicely and give a lovely colour. They were around £6 for a box. I'll find a link on their website.

Joining in!

lurking I've just bought those exact two books for my first go - the Gorgeous Colouring Book for Grown Ups and the Secret Garden. Chosen because... they were the only ones in the book shop.

I'd like to apologise to the lady who walked in after me (I was the lady buying a pack of derwent coloursoft 24, 20 staedler triplus pens, and those two books) in Abu Dhabi earlier. You were asking for books and I got the last one of each. I'm assuming you'll be on here Grin

I've just made a start in the gorgeous colouring book. I agree, very big pictures with little intricacy, and that's the one I bought felt-tips for. No bleeding through. I'm yet to try them in the secret garden book, but I think I'll use pencils for that as its not so bold, geometric patterns like the other one. I think I'll start with that book actually, the secret garden one looks like it deserves me to work on techniques with my pencils and I've not done any art at all for 18 years so it'll take me a while.

This is going to get expensive, isn't it! I was seeing all the pencils and choice and getting confused, so I may need more when I declare these ones rubbish I always blame the tools by the way

Toomuch2young · 25/07/2015 09:39

Some absolutely amazing art on here! It is absolutely art!
I started colouring for relaxation a while ago but quietly inspired by this thread I bought some Faber castels and a proper colouring book!
My first attempts and I have no natural arty abilities unlike you wonderful colourers but I have enjoyed doing them so much -onto a fox now!
Can anyone recommend a tin to put my pencils in as they are all over the desk after escaping the cardboard box!!

Welcome, new posters, to the friendliest most expensive thread on Mumsnet Grin

Toomuch they are great, I particularly love your elephant!

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 25/07/2015 15:29

Toomuch, I love the dragonfly, such delicate colours! Gorgeous. I'm working on my next one from Secret Garden, I just completed the wishing well (and posted it upthread), now I'm taking on the peacock.

FeelingSmurfy · 25/07/2015 18:06

Chicken pox has had me really ill, finally managed to get a pic of my last one, not been able to do any since

waggle (I think I am right with that username..) Its my birthday coming up and when asked for a gift idea from my parents I have suggested the pencils you suggested, that have the white around the lead. When I searched Amazon for them I found a sharpener particularly for those too so that has been suggested too Smile

Sorry the pics aren't great, phone is broken so had to use my tablet. Far too much faffing to get my camera out, especially while I'm like this, but I may do at some point

Awww Lovely, come back!!!! Thank you, but really its just thinking about where your "light" would be coming from and then you can figure out where you need to shade darker. Promise!! I'm doing the peacock just now, so many leaves.......going to do it the same way with the shading and the pastels I think.

Testarossa1 · 25/07/2015 20:02

Finally finished this one, it's taken ages with so much detail. I added a background, wasn't sure about it, but think it looks ok... from the Zen colouring Animals book

Ye gods, what a patience! That's stunning Testa, very detailed. Think I'd go cross eyed doing such fine detail. My fav is the turtle shell Grin

I love it, Train! You did make me laugh when you stomped off, I knew you'd be back with a brilliant photo, you're so talented Smile

Testarossa1 · 26/07/2015 09:03

Thanks Eddie it did take a while, going for something a little less detailed I think!!!!

OwlAtEase · 26/07/2015 12:35

I've just started this one - first effort with the polychromos. Am going to have to tell DH I'm in love with a set of pencils.

Wow some more lovely pics.
I certainly love this friendly thread Grin
The zen animal colouring book is next on my wish list!

PollyannaWhittier · 26/07/2015 14:08

Thank you Train and Bearfrills I did get a sharpener with my pencils, but it seems to have vanished ! WHSmith in town didn't have the pencils Bearfrills recommended, so I will go on a sharpener hunt before going further afield in search of new pencils Smile
My colouring is rubbish compared to all the ones on here, but I have started to try some shading on my latest picture and I'm really pleased with how it looks.

Two of my first attempts. I still get tangled up with putting the colours in patterns and getting all mathematical over it; I find myself getting quite anxious when I try to choose colours randomly Blush
