Adult colouring in books

Am going to order the Animal Magic book from Amazon. It looks like it would be nicer to do with markers for brighter colours. These are recommended in the Amazon reviews. Are they worth it?

Thanks!

lurking from what I have read, the book was reprinted and the newer version is better, I am sure the creamy pages are old one. It's really put me off ordering it as I don't know which I will get and I hate it when the colour seeps through. I'm not sure if crayola supertips came from my suggestion but I really like them Smile

Waggle thanks Smile colouring is helping me keep my hands busy! I started and finished an easy one last night, will get a photo of it later

cuphat · 20/07/2015 19:20

The Secret Garden appears to have been reprinted numerous times. I've seen a version from last year with creamy, rough paper and a new version with creamy but lovely smooth paper.

Same goes for Animal Kingdom; I've seen a copy from last year with really creamy (smooth) pages and a new copy with white pages. Apparently the older copies had white pages too.

I'd buy in person to ensure you get a version you're happy with.

Hmm. I thought I was inadequate just because I was using pens instead of pencils. And then I saw U2's pinterest link...

Anyway, DS (5) has decided grown up colouring is more fun than his books, so I'll share both our artwork. My owl isn't quite finished but we had a nice peaceful hour or two colouring together!

And no idea why these are posting sideways - my phone is not too cooperative...

Ha! Sussed it! Although I'm not sure they look any more impressive this way round...

The owl is stunning!

FeelingSmurfy · 21/07/2015 00:07

slev the owl is fab. Your son is 5?!? That is amazing, the adult books are hard, he has done a great job.

There is a book you can get that's called something like mummy and me colouring, each set of pages has a harder one and an easier one, so you can colour at the same time in the same book

OwlAtEase · 21/07/2015 06:44

That was really lovely of you to offer the giveaway, lurking! I'd recommend you buy Enchanted Forest, the paper is far better and pens don't bleed (I have both books, they originally used different paper in Secret Garden). The same artist is also releasing Lost Ocean soon, which should have good paper.

Slev, that owl is wonderful. And your son has done a great job too!

Guess what everybody - I'm so excited - DH has just told me he ordered the 120 set of Polychromos for me!! Lovely expensive pencils are in the post! All my subliminal messaging and subtle hints must have finally worked Grin

FeelingSmurfy · 21/07/2015 07:04

owl ooo exciting! Big brownie points for your DH

I cashed in £25 worth of points from doing surveys (over a few weeks) last night so I now have Amazon vouchers, and I don't feel guilty about spending them as they came from doing surveys in my spare time Smile not quite decided what to get yet, but I think a set of pencils is top of the list

lurkingfromhome · 21/07/2015 08:43

Thanks everyone for the tips about the paper quality - that's really useful to know. I will stick to using pencils and the Triplus fineliners for Secret Garden as those don't show through at all. It's funny how the paper looks and feels really good quality but obviously it's just not right for our purposes.

Owl - you have practically forced me to buy Enchanted Forest Grin. Purely in the interests of comparing the paper quality ... This is turning out to be an expensive hobby. I think I might die of happiness if I got the 120 set of Polychromos ...

OwlAtEase · 21/07/2015 09:01

You should definitely buy pencils Smurfy, they're a necessity I think!

Lurking, it is absolutely my fault that you need to buy Enchanted Forest (in the interests of science, of course) Grin. I should say I don't have the Spectrum noir or Crayola supertip pens, so can't say for sure they won't bleed, but have used the Triples fineliners quite heavily and they didn't bleed through. The paper is quite thick and white. I'm surprised the fineliners were ok in your copy of Secret Garden as they bleed in mine - you must have one of the newer copies with different paper.

lurkingfromhome · 21/07/2015 09:14

I've actually just been looking at the Amazon reviews of Enchanted Forest and some people are complaining that the ink bleeds through there too. Aargh. I actually only bought the Spectrum noir and Crayolas because of recommendations on this thread, so they must work with something!

I love the Triplus fineliners but I was wanting to build up my collection of lovely pens. I think I might have to go to an actual shop and have a look at the paper (although I can hardly test the pens without buying the book, so not sure what good that'll do me...).

Anyway, here are a couple of pics to add to the collection. These were done in pencils. They're a bit simple compared to all the amazing shading and blending creations that I've seen here!

I've got enchanted forest and my fine liners haven't bled, gel pens have ever so slightly, but only where the ink has pooled, I figured out a lighter touch and they don't bled through. I'm doing a picture in Zen colouring - animals, they're one sided, but have hardly any bleeding. Both books have reasonably thick paper. Maybe stick to one sided books with your stronger pens and fine liners for the double sided.

OwlAtEase · 21/07/2015 09:55

They are beautiful Lurking, you have a really good eye for colour!

RevealTheHiddenBeach · 21/07/2015 10:52

Testa where is the turtle from?! I need it in my life!!

WanderWomble · 21/07/2015 12:02

I'm going to Hobbycraft for some stuff for work.

I'm going to spend a fortune on colouring in stuff. I just know it.

slev · 21/07/2015 12:03

DS and I were using Sharpie markers in Enchanted Forest and they DID bleed through - but we like the colours so just chose our favourite picture from each side and did that one!

Smurfy, thanks for the suggestion - I'll have a look at that. DS is so much into "boy stuff" that he normally plays with DH much more than he does with me (I just can't get excited about Transformers and Start Wars) - it's quite nice having something we can do together. Although I'm liking Enchanted Forest so I may just live with him doing some of the less fiddly ones from there.

It's quite addictive though - I want all the books!

OwlAtEase · 21/07/2015 12:24

Fabulous plan Womble, I approve! Grin

Testarossa1 · 21/07/2015 12:27

Reveal the turtle is from Zen colouring, Animals. I got it in The Range for £4.99

lurkingfromhome · 21/07/2015 12:55

I just had the terrible thought there that I could buy two copies of Enchanted Forest and do half the pictures in one and the other half in the other, to avoid the bleed-through problem. God, somebody stop me before I bankrupt myself ...

Testarossa1 · 21/07/2015 13:25

Lol Lurking!! Though not actually a bad idea...... Grin

crockydoodle · 21/07/2015 16:03

Was In my local sainsburys today and they had the animal kingdom book for £3.99. So. Had to buy it of course. The enchanted Kingdom, dream cities and enchanted forest were all £4.99

crockydoodle · 21/07/2015 16:06

Not enchanted Kingdom, it was tropical wonderland!

Testarossa1 · 21/07/2015 16:17

My current work in progress, taking my time as it's very detailed!!

So many beautiful colourings!! I've been away on a long weekend break and took my colouring stuff with me. But - DD and I went to a flagship paperchase store and spent a fortune on pencils, pens, pencil cases etc. DH was green when he saw the receipt! I mainly bought pencil cases and fancy notebooks etc as I find their pencils a bit weak and washed out compared to my spectrum noir and polychromos but they're fine for DD. I expected paperchase to have jumped on the bandwagon re adult colouring but they had NOTHING to colour in at all!

We got back yesterday, and whilst topping up the cupboards I sneaked a copy of Colour.in into the basket. Be warned - the paper is shiny and hideous, I was so disappointed. It's so shiny that pencils just don't take on it, haven't tried pens yet but beware of buying this one.

lurkingfromhome · 21/07/2015 16:58

Oh wow testarossa, that truly is a work of art. Beautiful!
