Adult colouring in books

Am going to order the Animal Magic book from Amazon. It looks like it would be nicer to do with markers for brighter colours. These are recommended in the Amazon reviews. Are they worth it?

Thanks!

Can anyone recommend any adult mosaic style colouring books? Fancy a go and I had one when I was growing up and loved it, but can't see any I like now!

chanie44 · 02/06/2015 16:37

Funnily enough I really wanted an adult colouring in book and then I saw a link on Facebook to some free printouts, so I printed off a couple.

Just need some pencils.

pippydoo · 02/06/2015 16:37

Oh watching with interest as I really want to start colouring in too but need recommendations of books and pencils.

MrsMcGregor · 02/06/2015 16:50

Gulp ... Yes, too pricey but thanks for recommendation Thesultan! Keep recommending please ladies!

I bought myself a set of the Staedtler ergo soft pencils these ones. I am new to this whole world of colouring - I'm still on my first picture - but I'm pleased with them so far, as there's a good range of colours in the 24 pencil set, and they seem fairly robust. I haven't bought any books yet - I cheated and printed some pages from the internet, until I figure out if this is something I'm likely to keep up with.

I bought this mandala colouring book in Tiger a few weeks ago. It's quite intricate and is keeping me occupied during a long recuperation.
I use Caran d'Ache pencils, the water soluble ones. I don't use them as watercolours in my colouring book but they do blend well together when used as pencils :)

MrsMcGregor · 02/06/2015 18:59

ALovelyTrain Grin .... no way! Grab a chair, a colouring book and join us wanna be colourers!

I was looking at those LemonEmma ... had a look at Johanna Basford's website and she wrote about them in a blog post. A good approach too with nothing too expensive to start off with - I like that idea!

I'm definitely leaning towards pencils now .... I think a pp said it's more relaxing to colour with pencils and I just thought 'yes'! Got to order tonight!

I've got these and they are fine. Might treat myself to something a bit pricier at some point as the colour isnt very intense, but they are OK to find out whether you enjoy colouring.

Dont forget a decent sharpener too!

I just got myself the Mindfulness Colouring Book and some pencils - it's very relaxing after a day of doing assignments :)

ItsRainingInBaltimore · 02/06/2015 19:41

Oh my God, my SIL would LOVE those. You have to practically wrestle the colouring books off her and give them back to the children. She takes it all vair seriously. Grin

A good few years ago I was having an incredibly stressful time at work and I used to do this a lot. I never realised it was a thing! I just came across an old colouring book and found it a great way of destressing, so bought more and more. This thread has made me want to start again.

I never liked the books with all the geometric patterns though, I'd rather actual pictures.

pennyapples · 02/06/2015 19:54

With secret garden etc am not sure if I'm doing it right - obsessed with doing in a colour pattern, so not random... Is it better to be random? Also blending? Never occurred to me.... Should I be?

WizzardHat · 02/06/2015 19:57

I've got the Enchanted Forest book which might have different paper, but I haven't had any problems with the felt tips bleeding through, even when I go over the same bits. I use the Staedtler fineliners usually, and I have the triplus pencils as well for backgroundy bits

WizzardHat · 02/06/2015 19:58

pennyapples - it's your book, just enjoy the process ;-)

SoldierBear · 02/06/2015 19:59

Okay. Silly question here but how do you blend?

MrsMcGregor · 02/06/2015 20:03

Dammit, I want pencils and nice markers Wink

No, I didn't realise it was a thing either until I have kept finding myself drawn to the Mumsnet threads on the subject over the last few months. DCs don't like me 'helping' them!

I have staedtler ones - a pack of 30 and they're fine. I have the Millie Marotta colouring book, the animal kingdom one. I also ordered a couple of books from the Really Relaxing Colouring Book series as they were only a few pounds on Amazon

Sunnyshine · 02/06/2015 20:14

I have art therapy colouring books from amazon. They are amazing!!

Sallystyle · 02/06/2015 20:39

I am such a sheep! I just bought the book and some pens!

TheTravellingLemon · 02/06/2015 20:46

Screw it. I'm going to do it. I like the look of the enchanted forest. Is it good wizard?

ItsMyFuckingWedding · 02/06/2015 20:48

I bought two from the works this week, they have quite a good range

Sallystyle · 02/06/2015 20:48

I wanted the enchanted forest but out of stock until July 22nd and secret gardens on the 22nd June.

And yes, how do you blend?

evertonmint · 02/06/2015 21:20

A MN friend's partner (I would name her but I don't know her latest user name as we're just offline friends now!) creates mandala colouring books for adults. If you google i heart mandalas you should find him. They look great if you like colouring abstract patterns.
