Am going to order the Animal Magic book from Amazon. It looks like it would be nicer to do with markers for brighter colours. These are recommended in the Amazon reviews. Are they worth it?

Thanks!

Welcome pinkrosa! I think a few of us suffer from anxiety and/or depression and have found colouring to be really helpful. So I hope it is for you too Smile.

I have the Secret Garden book, and it is gorgeous. My Staedtler fineliners bleed through the pages, so I can only use pencils. But I think I have one of the earlier print runs. Some of the other posters here have said they used better paper in later runs that should hopefully be ok with pens. Your other choice is to buy Enchanted Forest (by the same artist) as that definitely has thicker paper. I've used the fineliners with that and they were ok. She is also releasing a new one called Lost Ocean next month, which looks really good.

I've just realised this is post number 998, so we're about to run out of thread! I might go and start a new one and link to it here in the last comment. Hopefully MrsMcGregor doesn't mind!

I don't find watercolour pencils smudge, Joffrey but I don't know if all brands are the same. I like them because they're soft.

owl good idea, things have been hectic here so not even thought about it

Joffrey I've used Derwent Artist and Derwent Studio pencils. I didn't really like the artist ones. They're supposed to be good for blending I think, but I didn't like using them because they were quite waxy, not easy to get rich vibrant colours. The studio ones were better for detailed, richer work. I've heard the watercolour ones are quite good but not used them personally, so not sure if they smudge.

Smurfy I'd probably check eBay too, or maybe google and see if you can find any online art supplies stores that stock them? That's how I ended up getting my polychromos, because Amazon wouldn't post to Australia.

Just realised we're very very close to filling up this thread!

owl nope, they collected the wrong ones today, I'm not sure what to do really because if I order again its just going to be wrong again! I'm thinking maybe check eBay?

I am really annoyed and disappointed, it was around 2 weeks ago that I started it!

Thank you Owl that's very kind! I must say my colouring has kept me out of mischief this last week - so relaxing! Now I'd like some pens to do some brighter work.

Pudding these were the pencils I got and I've been really happy with them www.whsmith.co.uk/products/whsmith-artists-colouring-pencils-pack-of-36/24028318?utm_campaign=eq_whs&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_source=awin&awc=3017_1439889340_47e7345314cf9fa31e0bfc6047d63e2e
They are showing as out of stock but I picked mine up in my local smiths and they were on offer - bonus!!

Welcome to the thread pudding Smile My favourite pencils are these www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0087OT3FY/ref=ya_aw_oh_pii?ie=UTF8&psc=1&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21 ,
They lay down colour really smoothly and it's easy to create shading by applying different accounts of pressure. They also do a smaller pack which is cheaper but this one has more pretty colours Grin

Hello all,

Havent RTFT but am desperately in need of something to help me relax due to combination of very busy and emotionally challenging job, impending house move and a DD entering the terrible two's!

I think this could be really relaxing and good escapism. I've looked up some of the colouring books from Amazon that have been mentioned on this thread and they look fab but I'm very confused about pencils -I know, I must be a bit simple Blush

There just seem to be so many and they all look the same! I know Staedtler have had some positive mentions on this thread but there seem to be a few different ones on amazon with different numbers (114NC24, 157SB24 etc), do the numbers mean anything?? If so what should I be going for? Is one set of pencils enough or should I get a couple of different sets? If someone could just point me towards a decent set or two with a good variety of colours that would be really helpful. Excuse my ignorance, I'm new to all this!

Weird, sure I just posted. Oh well. Here's my pencil Celtic design from before our holiday and my Zen one in pen. We got back on Sunday but I only just finished! They're coming up sideways but doesn't make much difference.

It's lovely Plum! The colours really pop on the dark background. Thanks for sharing (I hope it wasn't too scary - I do think the friendliest people on Mumsnet are on this thread) Grin

Plum I hope you do post a picture! I love seeing everybody's pics because they're all so different.

Hope your pens arrive soon Smurfy, that half finished picture must be driving you crazy Grin

Another lurker here. I've been admiring the wonderful pictures and have just finished the first picture in the Enchanted Forest (my initial drawing book got taken away by DD). I used the staedtler watercolour pencils though moaning about the lack of purple or lilac - I had to use blue and red and then use the paintbrush to blend into a light purple colour.
