Tamum and Marina request assistance...or, KNIT SQUARES - with apologies to NQC

If you can knit AT ALL could you please CAT either of us?

We are making a blanket present with a Mn connection and would love as many people as feel willing and able to contribute a 15cm square, plain or fancy as you like, in cotton double knitting yarn. We can help with sourcing suppliers.
More details available off-board.

It's a surprise for the person in question, so please, please contact us for more info rather than make guesses etc on here...it's in an extremely good cause.

Very many thanks to anyone who feels able to help. XXX

Oh thank you all very much! Once I have factored in these latest confirmed squares in transit, I will be mailing others who expressed an interest just to see how many more we can expect.
Glad the wool finally got to you Fauve

NQC, there was an eyewatering crocheted tie in one of my knitting mags a while back. I wouldn't make it for Michael Howard, personally, but I can rootle the pattern out if you like (also a hilarious butch jumper with duffle-cost toggles randomly distributed). I think if I make any of these my lot will be crying out for singing beer mats and Amazon vouchers next year

Oh, I don't really crochet, despite bundle's best efforts. I do keep meaning to try, though.

I have found some tie patterns online, but will probably just do a big tube, and then sew it flat, IYSWIM. Well, not an actual tube ... I have a plan, anyway.

I need to get some small-gauge DPNS (bamboo/plastic) and small circulars ... like 3, 3.5 ... where is best? (online)

Marina · 14/11/2005 13:29

Kangaroo in Lewes. They have a funny dynamic URL so my links to them don't often work. They are excellent - Sue Pearce, the proprietor, reviews wools and needles for Knitting Magazine so their stock is all the best stuff...

NotQuiteCockney · 14/11/2005 20:44

Their website looks a bit annoying, but I'll give them a go.

I have the squares. I have your address. I can try to make it to the post office tomorrow ... I have no labels of any sort. Would you mind signing my web name for me?

I'm happy to do some "spare" squares if you need them later, too ...

Marina · 14/11/2005 20:47

I'll sign you off medeario, no problem.
Get past the annoying Flash and there is a couple of fast turnaround experts there.
Lots of people rate Laughing Hens too but I've never used them because of Kangaroo always coming up with the goods.

Not had time to catch up with this thread properly - will try to tomorrow! Am half way through second square and hoping to get a third done before the deadline - planning to put everything in post on Thurs if that's ok?! I hope my squares are ok - they're just plain moss stitch through out, it was/is the easiest thing so I could keep track of where I was/am in between feeding/changing dd etc. Also not really knitted for ages so... Anyway having glanced down the thread it sounds like things are shaping up to be really lovely - well done everyone!!!

SenoraPostrophe · 14/11/2005 22:02

aah. someone found the thread for me!

I got the wool, marina, thanks. am halfway through my first square (having taken it down about 50 times - dh thinks I'm mad, but it's been a while since I knitted!)

will try to post wed, which means you might actually get it by the 19th.

NotQuiteCockney · 14/11/2005 22:03

I've only used angel yarns, as they had what I wanted (a specific yarn + colour). They were fine, although I've heard bad things.

Anyway, Kangaroo had what I wanted, so I just ordered some needles. I'm trying to ebay for yarn, just for a change. Um, not that I need yarn, thinking about it, I just need something fine to make gloves and ties with ...

At any rate, the package is done up and labelled, and DH will post it tomorrow. 1 giant square, 1 normal square, and 1 weird square. I've not put my name in, but you'll know they're mine.

Marina · 15/11/2005 09:29

Thanks SP and Twiga, don't worry if they are not here by 19th on the nail. It's so helpful to know they are in transit IYSWIM.
Oh I think I'll recognise your package NQC, I am looking forward to seeing it enormously! Thanks so much

I've done three but forgot about the posting - will try to do it today. Sorry!

they are APPROX 15 X 15 (with a bit of good will on the part of the measurer ). One grey textured, one orange with pink star, one orange cabled affair.

no labels so could you just sign me too please

Marina · 15/11/2005 09:54

Will do MP, thanks for those. All my squares require some stretching, cursing and/or squinting - more commonly known as "blocking and pressing" . so yours will be in good company.

OP posts:
Marina · 16/11/2005 09:49

Scrummy squares received from Tamum yesterday, eye theng you! Now on 45. The colours and textures all together just look fabulous, and all the alleged "faults" that people keep beating themselves up about make it "real" and not machine or professionally hand-knitted. Whether I will be so keen on it when sewing the blighter up is entirely another matter!

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 16/11/2005 09:56

Marina, DH has helpfully posted mine in some super-secure, must-be-signed-for way. I think. He's a bit out of it at the moment.

So they will try to deliver them by 9am today (I think?) but will of course fail as nobody will be home, I'm assuming. Sorry.

Marina · 16/11/2005 10:08

never mind NQC, that's exactly what my dh would probably do. I will be able to retrieve them at the weekend, although our posty is a pragmatic type and has seen enough squashy parcels lately to be capable of signing it off and popping it through the door! I will let you know when I lay hands on them.

OP posts:
Marina · 16/11/2005 10:49

Update NQC - Superposty rugby tackled dh on his way out this am and dh now has the parcel with him. Not bad for 7.55am.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 16/11/2005 10:55

Oh, good.

Having a good posty makes everything easier.

I hope you like 'em.

bundle · 16/11/2005 10:56

7.55???? ours came at 16.20 the other day

Marina · 16/11/2005 11:02

You hang on to yours, "ted", then you are a hostage to sew-up fortune!
We have no post at all when it his day off but other than that I could kiss the hem of his shorts. Knows which day the paper recycling bin is emptied so stashes parcels in it any other day, and leaves us a note. He is fab.
I will CAT you two and some other suspects re sewing. I could do it all on my lonesome but am boggling at the prospect and could do with some convivial company!

OP posts:
Miaou · 16/11/2005 11:05

wish I could help with the sewing up marina but am a bit far away - unless you fancy a sewing holiday?

NotQuiteCockney · 16/11/2005 11:07

I'd come help on a weekend sometime? Probably with whole family in tow, though ... but kids could play together?

(I'd also happily host a sewing up party, whatever ...)

And the dhs could babysit. Actually...there's a thought.

OP posts:
bundle · 16/11/2005 11:08

Good. I will count them tonight (scattered round the house, natch) so you can do a tot up.

tamum · 16/11/2005 11:11

Glad they arrived, Marina!

Probably a barking suggestion, but if you arranged them all the way that looks best you could post blocks of 9 squares, say, back out to people for sewing, so you just had to sew the blocks together? I know it's madly inefficient but I would gladly stump up the posting charges and it would stop me feeling so useless
