to be annoyed at 'lactivists'

I have just seen on face book that 'lactivists' are planning on making stickers that say '100% mummy's milk' to put on bottles of expressed milk just so that the world knows that they are not formula feeding (horror of horrors!) how SMUG is this? And how judgemental of people that cannot breastfeed for whatever reason??!!!

agree actually wastingaway - saying breastmilk is great. is enough i think.

ok, 2 things confuse me.

  1. shouldn't bm & fm be treated the same before giving to a baby? i'm thinking a bottle of bm & a bottle of fm milk should both be kept cool until needed & neither of them microwaved, so why would someone need to know the difference?
  1. why does nursery need to know? surely ALL the bottles should be labelled with the children's name on it? they need to give the right bottle to the right kid, whatever type of milk is in there?

people can advertise their bf is they want (and the wording of the label IS advertising, why else the 100%?), but don't try to pretend it's for convenience. there is no practical reason for these labels, only emotional ones.

I'm a bit suspicious as to whether this is totally true or whether it's another 'Winterval' story but if it is...

It does remind me of the knots my liberal parents would get into when the Big Issue first launched. Their worry was, once you'd bought your mandatory copy each week, how would others know that you actually had bought it, and weren't just walking past other vendors in the same spirit as those who don't support the Big Issue?

At one point they were discussing a series of colour coded badges so that vendors (and more importantly, Other People) could see that they were good and loyal Big Issue buyers who genuinely did already have one that week. I'm not making this up - this was discussed in my home.

I guess the point is that for many people, it isn't enough to do good. You have to have the goodness seen and recognised by others.

Wastingaway that sticker that you saw today was out of order and quite judgemental. They should not be giving out stickers like that.

wastingaway · 02/07/2010 17:28

Piglet, there were just a couple on the table with all the other leaflets, might not have been centre staff that put them there to be honest.
Won't be much difference I'm sure round here. We've the 4th or 5th worse bf stats in the country.

pigletmania · 02/07/2010 19:32

I personally would remove them Wasting, or informed centre staff. Not everyone uses formula out of choice, some have to because of various factors so its basically rubbing their faces in it really.

pigletmania · 02/07/2010 19:33

and making those who are not able to feel bad like they are letting down their baby.

coffeefestival · 03/07/2010 10:25

I agree with you pigletmania.
