to be annoyed at 'lactivists'

I have just seen on face book that 'lactivists' are planning on making stickers that say '100% mummy's milk' to put on bottles of expressed milk just so that the world knows that they are not formula feeding (horror of horrors!) how SMUG is this? And how judgemental of people that cannot breastfeed for whatever reason??!!!

But Milly why does the carer need to know what's in the bottle? Formula or EBM, who cares? I used to give my nursery EBM sometimes and sometimes he had formula. Big deal

I don't think this is smug. It's insecure

LouAnnVanHouten · 01/07/2010 19:41

Thats not a quote from the person who suggested the sticker, its a quote from the first person to comment saying that the Intenational symbol for bf made more sense than a picture of a cow

"You want people to know it's NOT cow's milk!"

harpsichordcarrier · 01/07/2010 19:43

Ladybiscuit there are lots of reasons why one would want to avoid formula.
e.g. avoiding dairy because of risk of dairy intolerance/allergies/ asthma/excema

to give one fairly common example.

twinterror · 01/07/2010 19:44

what I do think is a shame is that several of the mothers who are keen on the stickers, say they wanting them because they feel that others at their breast feeding groups are going to be thinking that they may be using formula. why do people have to judge eachother without knowing the facts, why are people critical of each others choices? I was lucky in my post natal group nobody gave a hoot about judging anyone else and we were there to support eachother regardless of what our babies were fed - is that not more important?

Agree with the 'too much time on their hands' thing.Seriously. Go back to work.

LadyBiscuit · 01/07/2010 19:46

Err yes harpsichord. Which is why my DCs had their names on their bottles. And it was ever thus at nurseries. Sometimes those bottles contained EBM, sometimes formula but I never felt the need to make a great big point about it

thisisyesterday · 01/07/2010 19:47

you know all the formula feeders who've come on to claim they're vilified yet again, despite being in the vast majority.... you know how bad you say this makes you feel?

well maybe that's what these mums are tryiong to avoid?

maybe they KNOW it sucks to be the one with the bottle and everyone looking at you and thinking "what a shit mum, she ought to be whipping her bazookas out" and MAYBE because you keep harping on about how terribly awful it is and how much everyone judges you ALLLLLLL the time, they're worried it might happen to them?

LouAnnVanHouten · 01/07/2010 19:48

Don't bottles in childcare settings have the childs name on?

If your child has an allergy then you put proper allergy labels on not labels saying "mummy's milk is better than milk from any old cow!"

MiladyDeScorchio · 01/07/2010 19:48

Thanks for the link OP.

Keep spreading the word.

chibi · 01/07/2010 19:49

Statistically anyone looking at you while you bottlefeed your baby almost certainly bottlefed theirs too

if they are giving you dirty looks maybe it's cos they don't like your hairdo

usualsuspect · 01/07/2010 19:51

I never gave a toss tbh ....

OP it seems strange to go to such detail, but really - who cares?

scottishmummy · 01/07/2010 19:59

definitely a who gives a fuck moment.these burds need to get a job, something useful to do other than fanny about putting silly stickers on baby bottles

sungirltan · 01/07/2010 19:59

why is it smug? why??

why dont the ff make up their own stickers with something like 'not bm, bf is creepy' (joke!)

also why is it accepted that bf can barely be mentioned lately lest it might farking well offend artificial feeders but thats its equally assumed that bf mothers have the skin of armadillos? why please?

MillyR · 01/07/2010 20:01

AIBU to have a sticker on my car saying 'I love my English springer spaniel?' Do those of you with cairn terriers feel judged?

usualsuspect · 01/07/2010 20:03

How about stickers on babies bums ,100% cloth nappies

BrigitteBardot · 01/07/2010 20:04

I don't understand why FF-mothers feel attacked any time any BF-"militant" does anything.
FF has won, it's prevalent, it's everywhere. What do you care what a few BF-mothers do or say?

OrmRenewed · 01/07/2010 20:05

Tsk!

Tit-fascists.

Shoot the bastards.

LadyBiscuit · 01/07/2010 20:06

I mean really though, who gives a fuck? Why not have a badge saying 'Orlando is only fed organic food'?

It's pretentious and frankly pathetic. And I say that as a committed and enthusiastic breastfeeder

sungirltan · 01/07/2010 20:07

millyr - i dont have a dog but would like one - stop attacking me with your smug dog owning smuggness!!!

usualsuspect - actually lactivist sell stuff with 'not all nappies are rubbish' on it

honeydragon · 01/07/2010 20:07
Rollmops · 01/07/2010 20:07

It's just daft. The goal of the whole exercise is to have a healthy thriving child who is well fed. Method of feeding or the feed itself is just so irrelevant.

MiladyDeScorchio · 01/07/2010 20:10

Does seems a bit precious but as BB says, FF is everywhere and prevalent. Why not advertise BM in a small way?

Not expecting anyone to give a toss how Orlando is fed but just to balance things a bit? What harm given the overall picture?

usualsuspect · 01/07/2010 20:11

I might put a sticker on my glass with 100% smirnoff on it
