eeck to headbands. my DD gets mistaken for a boy even when she's in head to toe pink!

ReshapeWhileDamp · 25/05/2010 15:37

Agree that they're loathsome and pointless. I always feel so sorry for the baby, who must surely get a headache from the constant pressure?

Very American though - I've hardly seen them here. Maybe people who are insecure about their new child's gender not being apparent should go the whole hog and get a headband with some pink feathery deely-boppers attached, with 'I'm a GURL!' spelt out in LEDs?

And OMG - Michelle Duggar had another one?? She really should stop - I'm amazed that she's so healthy really. This last one looked touch-and-go, though.

sungirltan · 25/05/2010 15:38

agree whippybamboo - but at least the headbands dont involve punching metal through the babies skin :-(

nomorebooze · 25/05/2010 15:42

God this has brightened up my day i have just had a cuppa and read through all the posts since yesterday, laughed out loud at the head bands with real hair attached, WTF do people actually buy these????????????. The other piccies are really cute, some beautiful babies around, escpecially loving the wooden spoon piccie, shes addorable ( without those things attached there wee barnets ). saw another wee one wearing one today when shopping! i sooo wanted to say something but refrained, so hard though, so very hard, lol. xxx

Bleeeugh.

They were all the rage when DD1 was born 20 years ago in the US. I can't believe they don't hurt the babies or leave a mark when they lie on them. And I think they must be a strangulation hazard too.

exMIL apparently did the pineapple style thing on all my exSILs, and I can't believe the pulling up of tiny tufts doesn't hurt either.

oh friend have just posted photos of week old baby girl - she's really cute, first public photos etc, and they have put a hideious headband thing on with a bow - ewh!!!

Apart from everything else, why would you put elastic anything around a soft skull?

As for 'to tell it's a girl' argument/defence it's a BABY!! Does it really matter yet if the whole wide world knows/doesn't know the gender? I'm thinking that those who NEED to know the gender, actually already know.

Downdog · 25/05/2010 16:11

I saw a poor baby yesterday - a few months old with LOTS of hair - which her Mum had done up in loads of little bunches all over head (maybe 15 in all). Every bunch was tied with a hair tie that had 2 large white beads on it - so the poor baby couldn't put it's head down in any position without resting on these dreadful beads and being really uncomfortable - poor wee darling!

mrsgordonfreeman · 25/05/2010 16:11

Some people get a bit uncomfortable when they cannot immediately tell what sex my baby is. She is often clad in dinosaur babygros and occupies an orange pram, so fair enough. In the winter I bunged a pink hat on her head - now it's warmer, I simply confirm that she's a girl if asked.

If people think she's a boy, I don't mind. There's no way I'd put a hairband on her baldy head. She'd just pull it off and eat it anyway.

Hairbands do serve a useful purpose. They let you know what sort of mother the baby has and saves you the bother of finding out.

Mind you, look what I did a couple of months ago: twitpic.com/zul8s

bettaday, 'my DD gets mistaken for a boy even when she's in head to toe pink!'

Me too - Poor, bald DD is always being mistaken for a boy (pics on profile). No way I'd put a headband on her head though!

Firawla · 25/05/2010 16:22

the one linked with the fringe is gross but generally i dont mind the bands
if i had girls i would probably consider it

MrsGF - LOL - both at this:
"Hairbands do serve a useful purpose. They save time because you can immediately tell what sort of mother the baby has."

and the pic! your poor DD looks most unimpressed! Funny though...

My DS is often mistaken for a girl, even now! And despite being dressed mostly in browns and blues. It's his big blue eyes apparently - obviously boys don't have blue eyes

CheerfulYank · 25/05/2010 16:25

I think the ones with the big flower are cute for pictures. But I'm an American and it's very much the thing to do here.

CheerfulYank · 25/05/2010 16:27

Thumb my DS also have large blue eyes with v long lashes...he's a toddler now and looks very much like a boy, but people always comment on "oh, imagine those eyes on a girl!" Um, no, thank you very much, I quite like my son's eyes where they are!

mrsgordonfreeman · 25/05/2010 16:27

It's my hair, before you think I bunged a wig on her head. It was also DH's idea.

CheerfulYank · 25/05/2010 16:27

also has, sorry.

thumbwitch · 25/05/2010 16:29

Yep, realised that, MRsGF!

(ps. you do know that your pics have a revealing name on them, don't you, in case your current name is for good reason?)

happyland · 25/05/2010 16:32

nomorebooze · 25/05/2010 16:35

Totally ridiculous, was given a huge bagful when DD was tiny, gave 1/2 to charity and 1/2 to DN's to use on their dolls.

buttons99 · 25/05/2010 17:09

I loved my little girls with the mini fountain on their heads...soo cute....and I also had some lovely little headbands that they looked really cute in....lovely photos...must dig them out for another peep..happy memories.
