... that the tories / lib-dems only care about themselves and have a 'as long as I'm alright jack' attitude,..

yet. all the people complaining about it are the ones who are worried THEIR benefits will be cut (and two that I know shouldn't be on benefits in hte first place as they are both on JSA and patently not looking for work )

But, these self same people don't give a jack about the people paying more tax to keep them in benefits.

Double standards, IMHO.

And, yes, I'm prepared to be crucified.

yes i know someone who is moaning they are going to lose their cold weather payment (despite me witnessing her hearing out of david camerons mouth that they will not scrap it) i wouldnt mind but she spends it on christmas presents and then borrows from me to pay her bills in jan/feb!! i know i know i am a mug.

Mouseface · 12/05/2010 14:54

Benefits?

I rely on them as both myself and DS (1yr) are disabled. We both get DLA.

I get Carers Allowance too.

We get Tax Credits as DH is self employed and on a low income.

I'd give anything for DS not to be disabled and have a better quality of life.

Before I had him, I worked all my life. And paid the higher rate of tax.

I hate the fact that I have to rely on others to survive.

So, thank you for putting food on our table and keeping a roof over our heads.

foureleven · 12/05/2010 14:56

Umm.. be prepared to be cruxified.

but for what its worth I do know where you are coming from. I dont think you should generalise as you have done but there are some people with this attitude.

in his speech last night Cam made it very clear that he would be encouraging an attitude of not asking 'what am i entitled to?' But 'what can i contribute?'

He said he would be expecting everyone who can work, to try to do so. And anyone who can not, will be supported.

I think that is what this country needs to be honest, theres far to much of a sense of entitlement about and too much of 'I cant' and copping out.

Mouseface, I understand that there is a worry he wont keep to his word but Cam did specifically say that those in need i.e. disabled, frail, elderly and the poorest will be supported.

Its the layabouts he's targetting, not those in genuine need.

This is a civilised society and as such we will always support people in need. I'd pay twice as much tax if it was going to the right people.

ABatInBunkFive · 12/05/2010 15:01

What a load of bull crap. Yes there are some people who think like this they are not in the majority by a long shot, and POT & KETTLE spring to mind in regard to DC and a sense of entitlement.

"POT & KETTLE spring to mind in regard to DC and a sense of entitlement. "

was that for me or OP... sorry, I dont get it..?

Mouseface · 12/05/2010 15:07

Foureleven....

Are you talking about those who could be perfect for The Jeremy Kyle Show?

Don't get me wrong, if you can't be arsed to work, have nothing stopping you and are fit enough to do so, then you deserve a grilling.

I realise that the genuinely needy will be supported.

I just didn't like the generalisation the OP created.

My post was in response to that.

Harimo · 12/05/2010 15:08

See, ABIBF, I'm not so sure...

the people I'm talking about are comfy... not well off, but not poor, but claim 'because they can' and are worried that the tories will cut the benefits

I haven't name changed because this is nothing I wouldn't say / haven't said in RL

There are far too many people getting benefits they should not be getting.

And those who need them aren't getting enough.

OP posts:
DuelingFanjo · 12/05/2010 15:08

I will probably be better off, being married and with a combined income of less than £50,000.

However I think the Tories will hurt the people who need the help the most and even though I may well be better off I worry about our communities which will suffer under a tory government. i am probabbly a bleeding heart liberal or something.

ABatInBunkFive · 12/05/2010 15:28

Harimo there is no way someone on JSA is comfortably off.

Do you know everyone elses finances inside out then?

foureleven - that was to the OP and anyone else who believed the crap that came out his mouth. DC claimed for a fair few non essential expenses yet bangs on about a sense of entitlement, yeah right.

'There are far too many people getting benefits they should not be getting. ' Really, in whos opinion, do you have statistics?

I wonder how the cost benefit fraud compares to the cost of corporate fraud and wonders why that isn't such big news.

Harimo · 12/05/2010 15:35

OK.. whatever you say, ABIBF.. both of the people I'm thinking of are

  1. Members of ZSL zoo
  2. frequenters of Pizza express (once a week)
  3. shoppers at Waitrose
  4. drinkers of wine (pretty much nightly)
  5. Owners of nice homes

If that makes someone poor in the UK today, my head is spinning!!!

Mouseface · 12/05/2010 15:44

Harimo

You seem to be coming across as a bit green eyed after your last post IMO.

Sorry.

Nothing to stop you directing that spare income to those you consider in need though is there DF ?
I shall do exactly that.

OrmRenewed · 12/05/2010 15:46

I am complaining. And I get no benefits. And neither need nor deserve them. I am concerned for others who do.

Harimo · 12/05/2010 15:47

Really, Mouseface???

I am pretty much all of those things. Can't see what I would be envious of.

Only difference is, I don't claim benefits, and I am abit at people who are in a similar position to me who DO!!.

OP posts:
GetOrfMoiLand · 12/05/2010 15:48

DP and I both earn a good amount and pay higher tax bracket.

I am comfortably off with no financial worries yet I empatically voted labour as I do not agree with the laissez faire attitude that the tories have towards the poor and needy in society.

Benefits cheats repesent a small minority of claimants. I would rather there was adequate welfare provision that covered everyone despite that some cheats could benefit, rather than have the whole system screwed down so tighty that a large number of people will not get the help they need.

GetOrfMoiLand · 12/05/2010 15:49

Oh bollocks apologies for my spelling.

ABatInBunkFive · 12/05/2010 15:51

What are you classing as benefits, just for clarification?

Harimo · 12/05/2010 15:51

JSA.

I'm getting a weird sense of de ja vu here. I got called green-eyed in a thread the other day because I told a MNer that she was being an idiot for moaning that she cann;t use her healthy start vouchers in M&S. I think that harimo is making the same point that I did; people get benefits to help them out day-to-day, not to help them afford the kind of lifestyle that a lot of people who do work would like very much.

Green-eyed? More like incredulous.

ABatInBunkFive · 12/05/2010 15:53

and so you and your partner are unemployed then? In what way are they in a similar position to you?

'Benefits cheats repesent a small minority of claimants. I would rather there was adequate welfare provision that covered everyone despite that some cheats could benefit, rather than have the whole system screwed down so tighty that a large number of people will not get the help they need.'

This with bells on!!!
