To have sex infront of 18 month old

We were having a cuddle that turned into a bit of a quickie. Ds was playing in his room and occasionally sticking his head around the door but generally not paying much attention to us.

Afterwards I turned around and came face to face with ds sitting on our bed, reading a book and showing me a picture.

He didn't seem at all bothered.
Thoughts?

the question is

"Am I being unreasonable to have sex infront of an 18 month old?"

To my mind, that is saying, if IANBU then I'll carry on with this practice?

Am I being unreasonable to MN while my DD is asleep?

No of course not don;t be silly

OK then, I'll carry on

bernadetteoflourdes · 26/03/2010 12:13

It is one thing to be having a litle nookie and have a waking child come in unannounced (we would all stop what we were doing. I hope!) But to carry on regardless and put on a floor show no way! However (re a thread posted a few weeks ago discussing the Education Dept's sex education film aimed at 9 year olds) Ed Balls would probably say YOUR BEHAVIOUR is ok. The cartoon film shown on the thread was fairly graphic IMHO (sorry, can't do links) and they are mooting the idea of showing it to even younger kids!

rocknstroll · 26/03/2010 12:13

Oblmov - i agree with you. I am so shocked. IT is like I have stumbled across a catholic nuns meeting or something. Say it loud, say it proud SEX IS WRONG AND SHAMEFUL AND NO ONE SHOULD EVER SPEAK OF IT shudder shudder.

hilarious really. OP, don't worry about it in any way at all. Its a funny story. Nothing more.

ifancyashandy · 26/03/2010 12:14

Dittany, with all due respect, I am not the first on this post to mention hang-ups. No personal attack intended.

KateBeckinsale · 26/03/2010 12:15

Oh and I must also point out that DS has a safety gate on his room and when he wakes in the morning he just plays quietly with his toys or turns the telly on and presses play on the dvd player. He's only a few months older and has certainly played in his room with toys when he wakes from 18 mo.

His room is child friendly and he's very independent.

I'd suggest you get him to do the same if you intend on having sex OP.

rocknstroll · 26/03/2010 12:16

I'd suggest you totally ignore the uptight nunnery gang and enjoy shagging!

Oblomov · 26/03/2010 12:22

Dittany :
NSPCC
porn.

mentioning either of those things in relation to Op is ......
wierd.

I agree with OtterInASkoda. Everyone questioing thta op left an 18 mth unattended. We don't have stairgates. My friend has 6 in her house. Our house is safe. I do not watch my children all the time. They roam free. Ds1(6) never had stairgates on his room or om the stairs. never fell down stairs. ds2(17 mths) wanders round as he wishes. I do not believe they are in danger. Some children are terrors and you can not take you eye off them for a sec. But not all children are like that, you know.

Eskimoo · 26/03/2010 12:35

I don't believe that the OP did anything deliberately wrong here, but they should not have continued whilst the child was wandering in and out. And if her question was 'is it ok' in general, I would say no it is not. I am very liberal and will talk openly about sex to my children as I do not want them to see sex as something naughty or wrong, but I do not intend to give them a demonstration!
My main concern would be given the reaction on here, what over reaction could be given shoud the child mention it/copy it at nursery/toddlers whatever...... What may seem like an innocent funny story now may not seem so funny when people inevitably assume the worst......

SpringHeeledJack · 26/03/2010 12:37

dittany while we're on respect, I don't think it's all that respectful to suggest to the OP that she had a quickie with her husband because she's scared of him...

LittleMrsHappy · 26/03/2010 12:38

I think its quite disgusting tbf, and Im in no way prudish etc....

I could not think of a bigger turn off, than allowing my child to see us going at it!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 26/03/2010 12:39

If it is prudish to think it inappropriate to continue having sex when you are aware your child is in the room then I shall wear my new label with pride

RedRedWine1980 · 26/03/2010 12:43

PMSL @ not wanting to get banged whilst your child wanders in and out and sits on the bed drawing a picture (im really curious now as to what the picture was of ) making you part of the 'uptight nuns' gang..I mean really

mackerel · 26/03/2010 12:44

I am staggered by the accusations flying here and the blurring of the lines between warm loving sex inside a family setting and paedopilia. What on earth is going on. Somebody said her DH doesn't do naked - why on earth would it be worrying for a father to be in bed or in a bath naked with his own DD? The hysteria and reactions to paedophilia that abound and the attitude towards sex and the idea that it will scar a child for life if he accidentally sees mum and dad having sex - as seen in this thread- will probably do more harm to our children and their development. I have friends who won't let their DDs change into a swimming costume on the beach "just in case". In case of what. The idea that kids need absolutely constant supervision I find bizarre too. Yes, make sure the area is safe but for goodness sake, give them some freedom to explore and be independent and discover things for themselves. We all grew up pretty much ok.

LittleMrsHappy · 26/03/2010 12:47

prudish to sex in general DUTTSU, NOT prudish in having sex in front of a child, that is disgusting!

SpringHeeledJack · 26/03/2010 12:47

I agree with mackerel!

SPBInDisguise · 26/03/2010 12:48

no one has said this incident will scar the child for life, however having sex infront of a child as a routine thing may well do IMO

mackerel · 26/03/2010 12:50

Thankyou springheeledjack. Let's get some perspective here. and did the OP say she was planning to make this a routine occurrence. I suspect not.

SPBInDisguise · 26/03/2010 12:52

she asked

am I being unreasonable to have sex in front of my 18mo

To me that sounds like if SINBU she'll do it whenever she wants

AliGrylls · 26/03/2010 12:54

Curious to know how many people walked in on their parents having sex when they were children. I did it once. I am not scarred mentally by it. What is the difference here?

SpringHeeledJack · 26/03/2010 12:55

that is a massive extrapolation imo, SPB

mackerel · 26/03/2010 12:58

SPB what a huge assumption and leap you have made here. Ali I think a lot of us have and are fine. I'm surprised that so many people have memories of being 18 months old.

SPBInDisguise · 26/03/2010 12:58

if you ask Am I being unreasonable to do X
and people say no
you carry on

surely?
