In thinking Mumsnet is not what it was?

I have been a poster here for seven years, my first post was asking for help after a DX on DS1 regarding medication, I was overwhelmed by the amount of people who took the time to respond and give advice and share stories.
I remember there being a lot of jokes and support, one poster who lost family in 9/11 was an inspiration and at any time day or night there was someone about for a chat, it made night feed more fun.

Yes there were times when people "fell out" this is life, and the odd nut job who tried to convince people that 4 times the amount of calpol was safe but on the whole it was a nice place to be, however just lately (mostly since AIBU was added) it seems people are getting really nasty.

No longer can you have a good debate with out the usual stupidness and name calling, if you question immigration there is no debate you just get called racist, people with problems get called troll, the term Jog on is used daily as is daily mail reader, and I ask myself when did this site become a playground with the childish name calling, where are all the grown up, funny, articulate women who you could have a grown up discussions with.

It is so boring seeing the same old faces spouting the same old crap lines.

I guess someone will say if I don't like it leave, and I just might do that as mumsnet is not the place it was

I think it is less cliquey now than it used to be.

MorrisZapp · 22/03/2010 20:42

Loads of great supportive chat on here if you look in the right places.

If you just want to scrap in AIBU then scrapping is what you will get.

mrsruffallo · 22/03/2010 20:43

Yes, it is less cliquey. There used to be certain posters that had a load of mates turn up if you dared to disagree with them.
And when it got personal it could be quite ugly

hairymelons · 22/03/2010 20:44

Not been here long but I think it's quite nice.
Everyone has been lovely to me so far but of course you get the odd random that wants to have a go, just like in RL.
I think if I ever did get sick of it, I probably just stop using mn. I mean, I get it that you're disappointed if you used to love it and you think it's gone shit etc. but you're not going to get a good response by telling everyone on mn that you think it's shit! Unless a good response is provoking a barney, that is.

daftpunk · 22/03/2010 20:45

Agree with that mrsruffallo...

MN seens alot calmer now...in some ways.

SoupDragon · 22/03/2010 20:47

I love it when people namechange in order to whine. Then, of course, when they don't leave no one knows.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 22/03/2010 20:48

I've lurked for years, but don't post much, and I don't think it's changed dramatically. I was a member of another forum before MN, but I got a bit fed up- same old debates, which moved very slowly, lots of hugs, huns and tickers.

I like the fact that MN is bigger- it means a bigger range of opinions and experiences. I've learned a lot and had some interesting debates (although I admit that I try to stay away from anything too heated or post if I think I will get ripped to shreds for my opinion!) But the fact that it is bigger also makes it easier to be a bit more anonymous, and not get dragged into personal feuds.

Anytime I have posted for practical advice, I have had really useful responses, which I really appreciate.

And I like AIBU! OK, some posters can be a bit too abrasive, but I like the feistiness (?) of it! I don't really want to be on a site where everyone thinks the same as I do. In RL I'm guessing most of us have friends who have similar approaches to parenting/ work/ life as we do, so it's refreshing (and sometimes eye-opening!) to hear other viewpoints.

TiggyD · 22/03/2010 20:49

This is a quote from another forum I'm on:

"for the past 6 months or more the forums have been slowly boring me. a lot of the subject matter as been done to death and i'm just not getting it anymore. it might be just a phase. but does anyone else have moments like this?"

All forums aren't as good as they were.

Dumbledoresgirl · 22/03/2010 20:49

Lulu, you are right in that there did used to be a horrible cliquiness which definitely isn't here now. So, yes, that is one positive thing.

But the petty name calling, the inability to debate as opposed to argue, the sheer number of posters (nice though I am sure many are), the loss of community feel (lol at a quiz asking who has 3 boys!), all those things make MN a lesser place imo.

And yes, I also thought the nastiness towards the Camerons on the thread about SC's pregnancy was a prime example of the bitchiness of some posters. Or perhaps shows their narrow-mindedness? It reminds me of the stupid mother who accompanied a school trip I organised to central London when I was a teacher. My colleague persuaded the policeman on duty at the gate to Downing Street to let us (adults and about 60 primary school children) go into Downing Street. We all stood outside no 10 and some of us were having our photo taken standing in front of the door. Silly bitch of a mother refused to have her photo taken because she did not approve of the current PM (it was John Major). Totally missing the point that 10 Downing Street is a symbol of our government which surpasses party politics.

Sorry, all of that is a total aside but I don't want to soil myself by posting it on the Cameron thread.

TurnOutTheLight · 22/03/2010 20:50

Thank you to those of you who see what I am trying (all be it badly) to say.

I think AIBU gives people a felling that its is ok to be nasty
Also there is less debate here and more name calling, and it is the same old faces that come out with jog on/ daily mail reader/ racist and so on, name calling instead of trying to change someones view.

There is a thread at the moment saying all daily mail readers should be killed lovely (yawn) (yawn) I bet a lot of the ones saying oh yes daily mail readers hang um all are the same ones who think the Ian Huntly thread is in poor taste.

Yes people come and go, names/faces change but why the nastiness and the name calling?
I have seen much good in the people here in my time but I just feel that the endless laziness of going on to a thread and saying "jog on" "oh daily mail reader" and so on boring.

Also if someone is voting for a racist party is it not better to point out the reasons not to and to re-educate then to shout racist racist racist and make that person more entrenched in their view??

southeastastra · 22/03/2010 20:52

people seem to be getting more aggressive on some forums i've lurked on

maybe it's facebook's fault, that seems to attract alot of nutcases

EggyAllenPoe · 22/03/2010 20:53

'There seems to be an anti debate feel to the place, with too many of the PC brigade taking over arguments.'

this i agree with, the Professionally Offended, taking third party offense even when none is intended.

After all, as we have menioned daftpunk, her expressing her opinions bothers me not at all, its that she posseses them that is the problem - (although evidently not for you DP!)

if you don't engage peoples attitudes they don't change. If you aren't free to discuss your opinion, no-one is going to get the opportunity to say what a pile of crap it is.

Dumbledoresgirl · 22/03/2010 20:53

And LOL at the posters who are telling TOTL for name changing. Have none of you noticed the proliferation of posters who are clearly old hands here yet have new names? I wonder why that would be? (as if I can't guess!)

AnyFucker · 22/03/2010 20:54

oh dear

why are you still here then, seriously

although I do agree with some of what you say...it can grate sometimes

but you can just hide what bugs you...that is what everyone else does

why are you so different ?

surely somewhere else would suit you better ?

SuSylvester · 22/03/2010 20:55

ooh hellp

Quattrocento · 22/03/2010 20:56

Dustycups - cod is still here

Net communities develop and move and if you no longer feel part of it, it might be time to move (note move, not jog) on

BrahmsThirdRacket · 22/03/2010 20:57

"It is so boring seeing the same old faces spouting the same old crap lines."

If you feel this, I think you spend too much time on here. Stop taking it so seriously, it's the internet. It's not like you have to live with these people.

SuSylvester · 22/03/2010 20:58

"There is a thread at the moment saying all daily mail readers should be killed hmm lovely (yawn) (yawn) I bet a lot of the ones saying oh yes daily mail readers hang um all are the same ones who think the Ian Huntly thread is in poor taste."

It's a joke you idiot! Are you the stupidest person who ever forgot to enter the stupidest person of the year award? Do you really think I want to kill 2 million readers of a particular paper? It was a joke partly in response to the people who are saying "hang Huntley" Or "We should have hanged those 10 year olds who killed Jamie Bulger", and partly because mumsnet feature so much in the paper nowadays.

I give up with this place.
