to dress my baby son in tights

When I had my DD I used to put tights under trousers when it was really cold. Would I be unreasonable to do this with my DS ( 9 months)? We have to take DD to school every day walking and I want him to be warm. If IANBU what age would it be unacceptable for boys to wear tights?

Not at all U

My ds wore tights until he was about 3. Keeps them warm and especially avoids that annoying gap between sock and trouser.

Disenchanted3 · 07/01/2010 11:43

i nearly bought my 3 yr old son some for the same reason, the have no idea.
Just don't tell his girlfriend you did it when hes 17

butterscotch · 07/01/2010 11:43

If no one can see them and they aren't particularly girlie I personally don't see the harm in it! But a cosy toes with an extra blanket and lined trousers should be plenty! Or a baby grow underneath his clothes!

fortyplus · 07/01/2010 11:44

Of course YANBU!

I bought black/navy/red tights for my 2 when they were little. The would wear them in the snow till about 6 or 7. Not good for street cred at school though - so don't ever send him to school in tights!

eggandsoldiers · 07/01/2010 11:44

No, my son wore tights as a baby and toddler. Once he was potty trained i switched to long johns as tights seemed less practical. Tights are so practical and cosy for babies. I found grey, red, blue and black tights, there were lots of odd comments from other parents

Bleatblurt · 07/01/2010 11:44

My boys are 5 and 2 and still wear tights. My 5 year old prefers leggings as they are less girly apparantly. {I don't think so!, lmao)

In this weather tights are fab!

Hullygully · 07/01/2010 11:45

He will be warped for life. And quite possibly a danger to others.

cassell · 07/01/2010 11:45

I'm going to get some for my ds (also 9mo) as it's so cold. You can always call them longjohns

Bleatblurt · 07/01/2010 11:45

Not leggings! Leg warmers I meant!

gorionine · 07/01/2010 11:46

I did it with my boys until they wwere about 3 as well (start of nursery) I had navy blue ones and under the trousers nobody is going to notice they are tights and not socks.

goingtohaveagoodnightssleep · 07/01/2010 11:47

It's perfectly normal in other parts of Europe. H&M in Germany sell batman and superman tights. My ds often wears then if it's cold.

Fruitbatlings · 07/01/2010 11:47

My husband has been wearing my leggings under his jeans, is he being unreasonable?

Fuck, did I just say that out loud?

mistlethrush · 07/01/2010 11:48

My swiss relatives were very when they found that it was not traditional to dress small boys with tights in the winter! They all do. Mind you, I just put ds in snow suit and cosy toes during the winter when out, and no problem with warmth when in (different this winter - we're putting on clothes when reentering the house to save money on fuel...)

ChippingIn · 07/01/2010 11:48

Tights are fine for a baby boy, then when they are bigger (usually after toilet training) little thermal leggings - cool ski syle though Ex DP would sometimes wear his ski thermals (nice not Grandad style!!) under his jeans in the winter!! (Very cute too )

WoTmania · 07/01/2010 11:49

Go for it - they can't pull tights off like socks either.

pooexplosions · 07/01/2010 11:51

Why on earth wouldn't you? Ridiculous question, IMO.

PavlovtheCat · 07/01/2010 11:51

think you have your answer. I had not even thought about it, but it makes sense, and I will do the same for DS when i actually take him out further than from car to door!

LillianGish · 07/01/2010 11:52

I wouldn't hesitate - only way to keep socks on in my experience with both ds and dd. In cold weather I would let him wear tights for as long as he is happy to do so. My ds went to nursery school in Berlin where it is (very sensibly) the norm for boys to wear tights in cold weather. Not the norm at his school in London of course so at the age of five he said he didn't want to (also rather sadly no longer wanted to wear anything with Thomas on as it was considered too babyish). However, for forays to open air ice rinks and days in the park he'll happily wear tights under trousers as he knows that's the best way to keep warm.

benfmsmum · 07/01/2010 11:52

My ds wore tights when we went to Disneyland Paris a couple of years ago under his trousers as it was freezing! I don't see anything wrong in that at all.

PheasantPlucker · 07/01/2010 11:53

Yeah, of course it is OK

babyicebean · 07/01/2010 11:54

Mine is tighted up int this weather , problem is he wants to wear his sisters tights which are pink and floral. He is almost three BTW.

All I can think about when someone asked when it is not suitable was that film about robin hood -

gorionine · 07/01/2010 11:55

Ditto Mistlethrush, I grew up in switzerland and can remember my brother going to school with tights under his trousers in the winter.

If you go to shops like Lidl, they sell tight in the winter and there are always girls ones and boys ones so I assume it is the same in Germany.

pigletmania · 07/01/2010 11:55

Er no absolutely not UR that is a bit of a daft question imo as long as they are warm thats the main thing.

cakeywakey · 07/01/2010 11:55

It's totally practical and if I had a DS I'd be doing exactly the same in this weather. YADNBU.
