to dress my baby son in tights

When I had my DD I used to put tights under trousers when it was really cold. Would I be unreasonable to do this with my DS ( 9 months)? We have to take DD to school every day walking and I want him to be warm. If IANBU what age would it be unacceptable for boys to wear tights?

yabu this will make him gay

mark my words

or warm

one of the two

EmilyStrange · 07/01/2010 22:17

Exactly wuglet, why on earth spend extra money on "boy" (and I really emphasize those quotation marks) tights. This is such nonsense, is it a joke?

Washersaurus · 07/01/2010 22:23

I recently purchased some leggings for DS1 (4.5yo) - I had to call them 'long johns' to appease DH. DS loves them and I wish I had done the same thing in previous winters.

I'm not a tights fan generally so would probably not put any child in them, but can't understand why anyone would care tbh (except my FIL who would undoubtedly make a scene about it and call DS1 a 'girl' or something silly )

AsYouWere · 07/01/2010 22:28

It's a great idea. Wish I had thought of it. Ronald: love the gay or warm bit

mybabywakesupsinging · 07/01/2010 22:35

Ds2 had a white pair that accidentally got washed with something red...
I won't mention it when he is older.

WingedVictory · 07/01/2010 22:42

P.S Where to find:

Next tights excellent, quite generous in size as well (good with full nappy!). I bought set of grey and red tights this year. Fab. Good quality, little bobbling. Great choice of colours, as well.

Matalan: also neutral colours. Less generous than Next, but good quality (had some last winter, so can vouch for them)

Sainsbury's - rubbish quality - bobbled and v expensive for what they were.

I think I might have tried Mothercare neutral colour as well, and have no bad memories of that, but it's so difficult to find stock in our local that it's a bit of a pain.

carrieboo75 · 07/01/2010 22:45

I have never done it before but this year all 3 ds's (8,6,4) are wearing both tights and leggings under everythig.

I am trying to decide whether to send them to school with them on tomorrow

kikid · 07/01/2010 22:48

TU range from sainsburys bought black excellent no bobbling here.

E-bay cheaper, navy, good, still wearing after prev winter.

i made ds2 some babylegs type thing by chopping feet off some knee length socks.but preferred tights when they all went through the lose as many socks as possible stage.

Chrysanthamum · 08/01/2010 14:43

babylegs are cute but babylegs with feet in them would b even better. i got joggers with feet in them in baby gap and mothercare 2 yrs ago and they were brill lasted 2 babies and still in good nick.
funky baby leggings with feet'd be a great business to set up as theres a demand obviously, i think socks are a waste of time for the first 9 mths or so anyway.

RedCharityBonney · 08/01/2010 14:56

Tights are ace. My 5 & 7 year old boys wear plain grey tights when we go out to play or for a walk in the winter time. Stops them moaning about being cold.

We call them leggings though, and never send them to school wearing them!

They love them :-)

PracticalCat · 08/01/2010 15:44

So glad to hear I'm not the only one.

It's not just me who does this then! I put my two boys in tights-under-trousers combo's, now they are 2.5 and 4 years and wear leggings from primark (plain red and black in a 2 pack for about £3 or something, I think.)We don't have central heating so they have to wear this indoors as well as out!! BTW (look, I abbreviated there, I'm getting the hang of it now!!), I'm pretty sure that JoJo Maman Bebe do the baby leggings with the feet, I remember trying to get some ages ago when no. 2 son was tinier but they had a supplier problem at the time, but I think they're still doing them. Probably selling like hot cakes at the moment though!!

PrammyMammy · 09/01/2010 10:47

My ds has always worn tights under his trous, he is 2 now, it is just too cold not too. My niece is 4, so my ds has all her old tights, lots of them . Yanbu

UndomesticHousewife · 09/01/2010 11:00

I always put my dd's in tights under trousers in the cold and when I had ds he was put into tights too.
Friends who had the same age ds's laughed and thought it was strange but funnily enough their ds's were in tights under trousers too before long.
Just because he's a boy doesn't mean he shouldn't wear tights, but I did get him grey ones.

I hate seeing a child sitting in a buggy in the cold with their trouser legs pulled up exposing the bare leg. The child must be freezing.

nappyaddict · 13/01/2010 05:01

Those of you who put 3/4/5 year olds in tights do they wear them to nursery school/school?

MumtoEliane · 13/01/2010 14:10

I put my DD in a snow suit. I call it "The iSimpson outfit" I think there is nothing warmer!

fruitstick · 13/01/2010 15:50

My DSis 10 months and has worn tights everyday recently.
I had trouble asthey are all sogirlie but Baby Gap have great unisex ones and I got red ones from M&S

fruitstick · 13/01/2010 15:51

oh andsainsburys have some great baby leggngs with feet

hebdenhedgehog · 13/01/2010 15:58

Can you not leave him with a childminder when you go on a bank raid?

MamaTama · 13/01/2010 16:18

Tights under trousers rule! Go4it & don't worry what anyone else says/thinks about it! He's your son & you want him to be cosy & warm. My son is 2 & still wearing them with no problem (brown, grey & navy to match his clothes). Honestly, what is wrong with people!

reservejudgement · 13/01/2010 16:30

If you go to ebay.de and search for Baby Strumpfhosen there are loads of options!

Olifin · 13/01/2010 19:41

My boy has been wearing hot pink tights. He also likes hairbands and jewellery but I persuaded him not to wear those outside the house
