to dress my baby son in tights

When I had my DD I used to put tights under trousers when it was really cold. Would I be unreasonable to do this with my DS ( 9 months)? We have to take DD to school every day walking and I want him to be warm. If IANBU what age would it be unacceptable for boys to wear tights?

YANBU I want to get some for DS2 (2.5). He won't have a blanket or use the cosytoes and his little legs are getting chapped from where his trousers get rucked up. I am sure I remember wearing tights under trousers too when I was young.

Lockets - what lovely photos (& kids of course!) - thank you for sharing Finding out about DD2 was a nice wedding present!!

My name is chippingin and I am a photoaholic

DS is 3 and still wears tights under his trousers sometimes.
He actually loves his tights.

Although when he was younger he did have a pink pair and they were the ones he loved the best
Poor boy.

gorionine · 07/01/2010 12:18

lockets, what a beautiful family you have!

ShinyAndNew · 07/01/2010 12:18

My nephews wear them. The youngest pulls off his shoes and socks all the time. They usually wear black, white or navy ones. Though they have been known to leave my house in some of dd2's pink glittery ones if they have wet theirs and my sis no spares. They don't care. the oldest one actually prefers dd2's tights to his own

YANBU.

paulaplumpbottom · 07/01/2010 12:19

No way you are being unreasonable. I do this evry cold morning. If you don't they get that gap between their socks and their trousers went they are in the stroller. Their comfort is whats most important. Someone should come up with tights for boys in the winter.

bronze · 07/01/2010 12:20

I do it. I cant use a cosy toes as I use a sling so need an extra layer on his feet and legs.

brightwell · 07/01/2010 12:21

I used to put my ds in tights under his trousers, he's 12 now & is wearing a pair of dd's woolly tights under his trousers for today's sledging & snowballing.

cakeywakey · 07/01/2010 12:35

I'm wearing woolly tights under jogging bottoms today, plus extra socks, to stay toasty warm in the snow. So is DD

My ds aged 15 months is also wearing tights. Black ones with little blue hearts, passed down from his sisters

duchesse · 07/01/2010 12:37

Of course not! Perfectly fine by my book and immensely practical, as they actually stay on.

VerityBrulee · 07/01/2010 12:44

I dressed my 2 ds in tights in winter until they were 4!

When DS2 was about 3 1/2 we went to the GP, and she (woman in early 30's) was aghast a little boy wearing tights. I asked her if she wore tights in winter

I remember going on an outing in the middle of winter, and there was a family with girls, all in warm tights and a boy in shorts and socks

canella · 07/01/2010 12:46

i agree its totally practical but i'd rather put my ds's in long john type things than tights - there is no logic in it - just find it funny the thought of my 2 boys in tights!

i'm in germany and its the norm for little boys to have tights on! ds2 came home from kindergarten with a pair on under some thin trousers having wee'd in all his own trousers (he is only 3 and was a bit rubbish at toilet training at the time) and he loved them! cant bring myself to buy them though - i'm sticking to the thermals!

belgo · 07/01/2010 13:14

I can't bring myself to buy anything which is why ds is wearing his sisters' cast offs!

oldraver · 07/01/2010 13:20

No I always put tights on DS1 and would with DS2 if I could of found a single pair of plain ones (all the plain ones I found seemed to be in packs of 5 which I didnt want to buy). In the meantime I found longjohns and went for them instead though he is 4

DS found a pair of too small knitted leggings with feet that belonged to DS1, and was obsessed with them and would wear them around the house. The gusset was way to low to wear outside... he did look funny in them. He so wanted some tights

WilfSell · 07/01/2010 13:25

YANBU of course.

But for bigger toddlers you can get little teeny tiny thermals. DS3 has gone to nursery in 'em today and they look so cute. Don't think nursery will be happy peeling them down to change his nappy though

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 07/01/2010 13:30

My 18month old is currently wearing navy school girls tights ages 3-4 from Tesco because they were the only ones they had and this weather DEMANDS tights whatever the gender. I find it bizarre you can't get boys tights knowing the amount of people who put their boy babies/toddlers into tights.

PurpleHeffalump · 07/01/2010 13:46

I'm a teacher and have a new boy in my class who has just moved here from Africa (10 years old). Boys and girls get changed for PE separately then meet in the hall. He came in with grey tights on under his shorts (had had them on under his uniform). Am very sorry to admit that I did have a little snigger (to myself - obviously not letting the other children see) and had to keep a straight face while I told him he'd have to go and take his tights off because he'd be sliding all over the hall floor (dance lesson).

Oh and this was a few months ago before we had any snow so it wasn't really that cold (clearly it was to him).

Sonilaa · 07/01/2010 13:52

My 3 year old is wearing tight when going out in this cold weather. Without he gets just very whiney and horrible...

I bought plain ones at BHS in the school uniform section, the smallest ones are a perfect fit. I find it unreasonable not to dress a child appropriately for the weather!

minouminou · 07/01/2010 14:01

Aaaarrrrghghghghghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....he's gonna grow up to ba a massive gayer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is he heck as like....get the tights on him. Quite frankly, anyone who comments negatively is just a little bit too concerned with gender stereotyping and sexuality, which, when referring to an infant, is rather odd.
Tell the silly sods that your DS is boho-euro-metro.

Ilovemybed · 07/01/2010 14:02

My ds has two pairs of black 'longjohns'.

They are black tights from Primark. He is much happier in them.

Bargain!

flockwallpaper · 07/01/2010 14:03

I feel a bit for not thinking of buying my DS some tights! He has several pairs of longjohns from mothercare, but tights would probably be cheaper and better.
