to dress my baby son in tights

When I had my DD I used to put tights under trousers when it was really cold. Would I be unreasonable to do this with my DS ( 9 months)? We have to take DD to school every day walking and I want him to be warm. If IANBU what age would it be unacceptable for boys to wear tights?

I always put my DS 18 months in tights under trousers.

I sometimes let him play in the house in tights and a vest as well!

My DH is a bit but they're just plain brown/navy/cream ones, not pink with spots!

Anything to keep him warm!

tulpe · 07/01/2010 16:06

My DSs also have worn tights under trousers in the winter since they were both babies. Very sensible idea.

When we go skiing, they also wore them instead of thermal leggings - DS2 still does (he's 5) but DS1 has refused and wears merino leggings now (he's 9).

IME, most of the boys in the creche of the hotel/chalets where we have been skiing spend their non-skiing time running around in just tights and ski socks on their bottom half

GrendelsMum · 07/01/2010 18:22

Just call them 'long johns with feet' and let the boys run free!

RTKangaMummy · 07/01/2010 18:24

DS used to wear a red pair of tights under trousers ~ make far more sense than socks that fall off

sowhatitsonlysnow · 07/01/2010 18:25

Standard practice on the continent

baskingseals · 07/01/2010 18:33

ds2 is currently sporting a rather nice brown pair under his trousers.

YANBU

Mandy1966 · 07/01/2010 20:05

The little boy I child mind, hes almost 2 1/2, wears tights, under jeans etc, Mum is Norweigan and thats what they dress their littleones in over there and all in one longjohns too,
So no I dont think your BU, but I think Hullygully is, how is it gonna warp a baby and make him a danger to others!!! duh

badietbuddy · 07/01/2010 20:09

yanbu. My ds is 18 months and has always worn them because he just pulls his socks off.

tibni · 07/01/2010 20:18

Always used to put ds in tights when he went to softplay as he would not keep socks on. I used them in very cold weather too.

ds (ASD) has a sensory disorder and is hyper sensitive to cold so tights helped stop the screaming.

MrsMotMot · 07/01/2010 20:18

Oh no YANBU at all. DS (14m) lives in them, I fear frostbite without them! It is seriously chilly up here (north Scotland) and I found some stripey red and beige ones that aren't girly. A friend of mine was very about it and advised knee high socks instead. But I will stick to the tights.

lindsaygii · 07/01/2010 20:53

I looked in Mothercare for tights a few weeks ago and they were all pink... Where are you all getting boy-coloured tights from?

My ds wears full length babygro under his trousers at the moment. Makes him look natty cos his feet and arms match! ;)

sowhatitsonlysnow · 07/01/2010 20:55

H&M usually have boy coloured ones

NewnameSameoldme · 07/01/2010 20:59

In some European countries on high days and holidays you can see little boys aged 4 or 5 yo wearing tights with woolly shorts and matching cardies...

I think that's taking things a bit far...

Chrysanthamum · 07/01/2010 21:02

I got my 2yr old grey asda tights and my baby boy a red and cream pair in a pack. Last winter I could only get my hands on tights with hearts and stars but noone notices them under jeans anyway.

SpookOnAStick · 07/01/2010 21:02

What a brilliant idea! I can't find a reasonably priced snowsuit anywhere and will be straight off to purchase tights tomorrow. My son is 18 months and thanks you for his warm legs

DorindaG · 07/01/2010 21:03

Bum genius and others do a version of baby tights called 'baby legs' and there's another brand beginning with H I can't remember - they are not tights but long socks. Stripy and lovely.
My fella would probably scoff at them to be honest, but if they keep 'em warm, then who cares what other people think?!!

Fine whilst in nappies IMO, and ideal/very practical for babies without shoes who tend to pull socks off. Not sure once toilet trained - little girls who are newly toilet trained find them hard with skirts so think even harder under trousers.

Asked DS if he would wear plain navy ones (DD's hand me downs) under his trousers for nursery today (he is 3) and he totally refused partially as he was worried about pulling them down and up for going to toilet.

So to answer your question

  • great/perfect etc up to wearing shoes (ie 12-15 months)
(after that could wear thermal long johns)
  • ok/acceptable whilst still in nappies (ie 2-3 years)
  • not great after that
WingedVictory · 07/01/2010 22:05

What are you talking about? Of course boys can wear tights, until whatever age they want to. Long johns may become an alternative at some point, but leave that up to DS, because don't they get all opinionated about their clothes at some point?

For the record, DS is 21 months, and wears tights. My DH's town in Croatia has a garment manufacturer which produces special Thomas the Tank Engine and other masculine tights.

Please, do act in DS's interests and keep him warm, whether you use tights or LJs!

EmilyStrange · 07/01/2010 22:13

What an utterly srange thing to worry about, who the hell cares. I always dress mine in tights in cold weather and I couldn't give a toss if they are pink, flowered or whatever. The only reason I dont dress my older ds in them is because he refuses, and why does he refuse... because people make such a fuss of what is apparently appropriate for each gender to wear. The result is younger ds is cosy and older ds is moaning about the cold. Seriously of all the things to worry about...

cheesesarnie · 07/01/2010 22:14

both my ds's wore/wear tights when its cold.ds1 is 8 and i couldnt get him to this year but last year if it was no school and we wear outside he would wear them.nobody knows!
we have tights from dd so instead of letting the boys freeze if theyll wear them i'll put them on them!

Louby3000 · 07/01/2010 22:14

Mantyhose

DS wears tights all the time. Its cute he looks like a tiny gymnast when we are peeling layers off for bath time.
Cheap unisex colours in Primark.

re..where do you get non-girly tights.

I don't! DS wears DDs old ones regardless of colour.
He also wears a lot of her vests so will often go to nursery with a vest saying "princess" or "fairy".

He is only 18 months - don't think he'll still be doing that when he is 10!

MamaG · 07/01/2010 22:16

Another one looking for non pink tights here - BabyG is a bugger for pulling socks off, he makes it his personal mission I think
