AIBU to not give the child a biscuit

Went to Tesco's this morning to do the grocery shop before hopping on the bus home.

Got a bit peckish so opened a new packet of chocolate bourbons and started reading my book before I noticed a 3-4 year old kicking off shouting he wanted a biscuit.

Cue the mum of said child turning to the child and saying "Would you like a biscuit?", child obviously says yes and the mum turned to me.

I carried on reading my book and the mum attracted my attention and asked for a bisucit for the still tantruming child.

I refused to give the child a biscuit - cue the child tantruming until he got off the bus 10 minutes later and lots of looks from the mum.

So should I have given the child a biscuit - I wouldn't have expected anyone to give dc (2.2) a biscuit and would have soon told him to stop tantruming and causing a nuisance on the bus.

Sounds as if someone is throwing a Mary.

mumblechum · 10/12/2009 15:02

mumblechum · 10/12/2009 15:03

SexySantasWearPrimark · 10/12/2009 15:04

SSWP

It will make life easier for all of us.....

deaddei · 10/12/2009 15:04

Bet op is having a cup of tea and finishing the packet by now.
I just may go and do the same.

pagwatch · 10/12/2009 15:06

actually I am at don't call me sexysanta.
I am not typing all of it. If you don't like sexysanta having it as the first part of your name seems to be a bit masochistic.

Ivykaty44 · 10/12/2009 15:06

I was taught as a child not to ask as it is rude, If I was asked for anything I had by a stranger on a bus I would think it was odd. If I then had enough to offer the entire bus one - then I would, but if I didn't I would have to say no as I don't have enough to go around and it would not be fair on everyone else

GetOrfMoiLand · 10/12/2009 15:09

Is sexysanta TWDP?

SexySantasWearPrimark · 10/12/2009 15:10

TDWP - SSWP

just switch a couple of letters, tis easy

I couldn't bear the shame of being known as sexysanta for the entire fesive period.

VKinTheManger · 10/12/2009 15:12

Why would you give yourself a nickname that you don't want to be called by?!

bibbitybobbitysantahat · 10/12/2009 15:13

Good gracious! SSWP I think you need to go upstairs to your room and calm down for five minutes don't you?

deaddei · 10/12/2009 15:13

Go and see if you can cadge a bourbon off someone.

GetOrfMoiLand · 10/12/2009 15:14

Why have Sexy Santa in your name then!?

Could have anything Christmassy that you wouldn;t get peed off at being called. Such as Virgin Mary. Father Christmas. Good Kind Wenceslas

VKinTheManger · 10/12/2009 15:14

There are very few threads that make me laugh - but this one has, and I don't see how it can be interpreted as offensive. They all quite clearly put

errrr.... denotes a very obvious joke that was in no way meant offensively....

Adair · 10/12/2009 15:14

Haven't read all of thread but

The mum was clearly VU. but you were being a bit rude, am sorta with SC here - it's a biscuit. What's wrong with generosity and a sense of community?

FWIW I would have bypassed mum and said to child, 'yes you can have a biscuit sweetheart, can you ask nicely?'. Assuming child is old enough to not be stropping. If they are not old enough to ask nicely then well, why not just give 'em a blimmin' biscuit anyway and smile and say 'thank you' as you would with your own kids.

pagwatch · 10/12/2009 15:15

Blimey. I feel like I walked in on a fight in a pub.

  • I just posted that i didn't find the comments offensive. I hear what you say about why you do - I just see it differently.

FWIW - I have no notion who the poster is and I don't really care. I am really rubbish at names.

SexySantasWearPrimark · 10/12/2009 15:19

Does the virgin mary wear primark?

pagwatch · 10/12/2009 15:20

always.

Thrift is a virtue

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 10/12/2009 15:21

VKinTheManger · 10/12/2009 15:23

I thought everyone wore Primarni??

SantaWears2shoes · 10/12/2009 15:25

yanbu

VirginMaryWearsPrimark · 10/12/2009 15:25

she does indeed

pagwatch · 10/12/2009 15:26

lovely, Virgin

LetThereBeRock · 10/12/2009 15:29

I fail to see why it's rude to refuse to share your snacks with a stranger.

Paolosgirl · 10/12/2009 15:32

Agree with Adair. Tell the child to stop the noise and nonsense, and then hand over the biscuit. No stopping of noise, no biscuit. Easy.

Weird of the mum to ask though...and I bet eveyone else on the bus was willing you to hand over the bourbon to give them some peace.
