Hello,
I am a regular poster on the 11+ site.I have drifted over to MN because of noticing posts about it on the forum.
I totally understand how the site can seem scary and there are lots of driven parents and perhaps I am one of them. I have, like all parents or most, my children's best intersts at heart and they are both very happy at grammar school. We did not hire a tutor.I did 6 months of once a week prep as Vr and NVR are not something covered in their state school.
The 11+ posters were sooo helpful and supportive.
I like Tipsy very much.If people only fleetingly visit, it might not be easy to see that she regularly "sends herself up"and is very kind and supportive to many, many members via Pms.
Sally Anne and the appeals section give outstanding, voluntary support to people grappling with unfair outcomes in the very flawed 11+ process.
The site is well moderated in my opinion as I don't personally like swearing and slanging matches.
I too have had log in difficulties and have had to change my user name. This is probably just a glitch and not a conspiracy.
I have no issues with mumsnet and am sure that the vast majority of users of this site would find that actually there is a lot of general parenting advice and support on the eleven plus site.
This is probably my only post on here so have to use your smileys as they are great.

"Everybody got letter but majority do not want to disclose their cards. You will not get true answer. There are more observers in this forum session."

Is that in some kind of code that I can't decipher? even assuming English might not be the first language of that poster I just can't make head nor tail of it.

I do go on the elevenplus forum, I like it, its been helpful but yes, like anywhere I guess there are some right scary and selfish people on there.

MsDav · 12/03/2010 21:54

PS whats the point in not divulging your position? I think I did on there somewhere. Have I missed some clever trick and my child will magically get a place if no one knows? Seems a bit daft tbh

I have been alerted to this thread by yoyo123 and also Waltons (not a Mod - I can confirm that).

Should anyone have issues or concerns about our site they are most welcome to contact me on the email address given above.

I think this last post is very unfair! Obviously the 11+ moderators are in a no win situation. They take the time to come and reassure anyone who has had technical difficulties with the site that they are welcome to return, and they get criticised for being on Mumsnet.
The poster who claimed to laughably "have been permanently banned for being an atheist",was back on the site on allocations day and several times since.Any log in difficulties I have had were technical glitches , have been rapidly mended.
Threads do get closed down but rarely and those involved get explanations. It happens when discussion becomes personal or abusive.
As for Sally Anne not getting many takers, some of the posters who have posted on this thread have used the exact same user bames on the site.So I can assure you that MN users frequent the 11+ forum.
Getting back to the original poster's question, yes it can seem scary. For many of the regular posters on the site, they are in a phase of family life when secondary school issues are important. When I look at some of the breasfeeding threads on here, they can look obsessive/neurotic but they aren't(usually). They just reflect the worries and interests of that phase of motherhood.
Selection in education is subtl
ey on the increase even if grammar school are not.More and more schools, due to spe
specialist status are selecting up to 20% of students on aptitude academic, music and sporting. If you live near a truly failing comp, then many of the threads on the site are informative and reassuring.
Thank you to the people on this thread who have been polite and balanced.Do not believe everything you hear about the site e.g people being banned who clearly still use it!
I for one am very grateful I discovered the 11+ site and the vast majority of users and all the moderators are supportive and helpful.

claretlover · 13/03/2010 10:56

Sorry for typos - on the 11+ site you can edit your posts after submitting but maybe not here?

I don't know what i did but I typed you a long reply and it's gone.My inefficancy on the site not a dark conspiracy.

Of course you are allowed to comment further and your post were polite and balanced but I do feel unfair to Sally Annne , who was tring to extend a welcome to those mistakenly thinking they have been excluded.
I have had pms refuse to leave my box and logging in difficulties. The mods would not ignore communication.I think Ed is mistaken.

I have friends on the forum who have been moderated. They don't necessarily agree but they are always communicated with.

Each to their own but I like the heavier moderation than here, which at times, seems like a "free for all".I prefer for genuinely offensive comments to be removed. There was one the other night re the Harrow documentary. It hinted at paedophile practices and was swiftly removed.

It can seem obsessive as for many parents on the site getting 3 children into grammar in say 6 years , is pretty time consuming.weaning is interesting when you are in that stage but not thereafter.
The good of the site far outweighs the bad.the region i mostly post on is friendly and completely unlike the other thread when it comes to waiting lists.

The appeals section moderators give endless hours of their spare time to distressed parents.Selection is increasing by stealth in specialist state schools and many parents need help.

I do not believe they ignore people. Perhaps ( I don't know) if people repeatedly protest about the same thing they might get told that there is no point repatedly having the same debate?
I have too much evidence to the contrary of the notion of moderators ignoring people. but you obviously feel you have too.I do not believe there are many sites where moderators work tirelessly and unpaid, behind the scenes, to help people through comples processes.(Appeals)
As I said before I find the low level of moderation here not to my own taste.

Anhow shopping beckons and I think you and I will just go round in circles so I will make this my last post.I don't think we are likely to reach agreement but I hope at least some people , a few, might believe there is much good on the site.
best wishes
