to ask friend, who came from abroad to visit new baby & family, to leave?

This is my first AIBU, please be gentle with me. i really am in a dilemma about this and willing to consider all viewpoints. she in in house with me now, so typing fast. apols in advance for typos and poss having to 'reveal by stealth'. tia

friend came last week to visit me, newborn and family. after two days she states that she came on open ticket and had come to 'help'. however, as my cousin is living with and helping me, my friend has decided to get a job until christmas, before flying back home.

so, yesterday, she enquired in the local shopping centre and updated her cv. this has MY address and phone number on. she didnt ask in advance and i was too chicken to say anything at the time. im worried this is the thin end of the wedge and that she will need bank account, NI number etc in my address.

the overall situation is far from ideal. she is sleeping on the settee, has a bag in the hallway and another in my bedroom. there are a total of 7 people now living in my 3 bedroom home. no mention has been made,by me or her, about this arrangement. am usually mindful to use appliances at night, when its cheaper. she puts on heating, washing machine, tumble drier without a second thought and its starting to rile me. she also involves with managing children, to which i have commented, but i dont want her to feel gauche and unwelcome. i feel bad typing this post and maybe shouldnt say anything? i have 3 week old, is it my hormones and aibu?

You have certainly done the right thing and are justified in feeling angry.

Do you think she will leave by friday?

paisleyleaf · 07/10/2009 13:40

You're still being perfectly reasonable.
Well done. I'm glad you don't feel guilty.
One way ticket though!

BiteOfFun · 07/10/2009 13:40

Well done- what a cheeeky so-and-so

Chickenshavenolips · 07/10/2009 13:41

Can someone please translate 'Off you fuck' into Italian, just in case the OP needs it come Friday?

flowerybeanbag · 07/10/2009 13:41

Outrageous! 'Paying for a room somewhere won't be worth it'?!! But it's fine for you and your DP to effectively fork out for accommodation for yourselves, your family and her out of your income?!

You are well rid.

RenderedSpeechless · 07/10/2009 13:42

tcf, she is 32.

she has torn up the cv she was working and asking again how long i will be with the laptop. i asked if she needs it to book her flight, and she said:

"i already told you, i need to check my email." she didnt say it in a nasty way.

im not being an arse or obstructive, but i'll finish when i finish? i can hear her running the bath. seems we both need to unwind.

I'm, just at this.

Where do you know her from?

again.

poorbuthappy · 07/10/2009 13:44

Well done RS! To be honest any friend who did this and then acted all hurt when spoken to about it may not be the ideal friend to have.

Niknak21 · 07/10/2009 13:44

Remember it's your laptop, you could say thanks for running the bath for me, I need to chill out

RenderedSpeechless · 07/10/2009 13:45

fbb, the 'not worth it' comment got to me too. seems as though her visit was determined by what she may potentially get out of it. we live and learn eh?

TheCrackFox · 07/10/2009 13:45

Tell he to buy her own sodding lap top and pay for the broadband and electricity too. You know, like very other adult. An it isn't free to run a bath either.

Is she a good friend or more of an aquaintance? She is old enough to know she is free loading. I would have made allowances for her selfishness if she was under the age of 21. But 32! Good grief.

flowerybeanbag · 07/10/2009 13:45

Any real friend or in fact any reasonable person would be horribly embarrassed and hugely apologetic in this situation.

jasper · 07/10/2009 13:47

well done RS
I am still reeling at her cheek!

JulesJules · 07/10/2009 13:47

at paying for a room won't be worth it, especially with bills and food - which obviously, you were supposed to be providing for free. When you have just had a baby.

I can hardly believe the cheek of this woman.

Well done you though. Now eat that chocolate.

RenderedSpeechless · 07/10/2009 13:49

she actually is a really good friend, she knows my family and they welcomed her in a heartbeat. trying not to over-analyse her response, poss just came out like that through embarrassment.

like the 'thanks for running the bath for me' contribution. classic.

Well done you. Am by her response though. You were clearly a meal ticket for her, and the facade of coming to help you is outrageous.

JulesJules · 07/10/2009 13:50

THIRTY TWO????

I thought she must be about 19. Tell her to get her own laptop. FFS.

StealthPolarBear · 07/10/2009 13:50

well done. you've done the right thing.
Do you have a bottle of wine ready for you, dp and cousin for fri night?

latestincarnation · 07/10/2009 13:50

hold your ground and do not even entertain having her stay for longer than the weekend - if she had a one way ticket and no job, she was obviously planning on freeloading. She took it badly because her little plan hasn't worked out.

You are DNBIU

I hope you get some family time to enjoy your new baby - congratulations!

FABIsInTraining · 07/10/2009 13:52

OMG

Is she a long standing friend?

What does she need to check her emails for? She clearly had all this planned.

RenderedSpeechless · 07/10/2009 13:53

thanks for all the virtual backslaps and congratulations. glad that over with.

(had the chocolate BEFORE, choc courage y'know!)

thnaks again all.

preciouslillywhite · 07/10/2009 13:53

well done you!

FimbleHobbs · 07/10/2009 13:54

I'd switch the router off when you finish on the laptop 'oh our internet connection is terribly unreliable'

(I am a cow though)

MollieO · 07/10/2009 13:58

Chickens - that is what my post says (see 13:06)!!
