to say my daughter can't shave her legs?

My DD1 is fed up with her "hairy legs" to be honest I don't think they are that bad, but then what do I know?! She is 12 and certainly things are happening and her body is changing, but doesn't 12 seem awfully young to be starting down that road?

I know she could use that stinky cream stuff and she doesn't have to slice her legs to ribbons like I remember doing ( and always when I was just about to go out!) but she seems so young.

I am not ready for this yet!! Has anyone else had this come up ?!! Help!!

I don't see why 'let' comes into it. If my mother hadn't let me I would have done it anyway.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 08/11/2009 19:30

I think taking a 7 year old child is rather extreme Sardine ( omg that rhymed!) but as you say each to their own, and that seems to have a whole lot more to do with the mum's view than the child.

TheMysticMasseuse · 08/11/2009 19:31

i think i was about 11 when my mum first took me to the salon to have my legs waxed. i think i was self- conscious about it but she def initiated it- but then, being italian, we're very hairy and very into hair removal.

i have been waxing/shaving/veeting/lasering for 22 years

i would take my dds as soon as it starts to be visibly uncomfortable and absolutely if they asked for it. it is too much of a trivial thing to feel self conscious/be bullied about.

incidentally i always felt so incredibly sorry for little girls of about 8/9 with a visible dark moustache and think mothers have a duty to take care of it...

Lapsedrunner · 08/11/2009 19:35

I am shocked by this thread, I must have been late teens/early 20's before I did anything about my legs!

ilovepiccolina · 08/11/2009 19:38

Sorry, but yabu.

I would say pick your battles - this isn't worth obsessing over.

Buy her a decent razor & some cream & tell her to go gently - by the time I got round to giving DD this advice she had already learnt for herself, & showed me the cuts!

scottishmummy · 08/11/2009 19:43

let her do it.if it boosts her self esteem.doesnt mean she will become product obsessed fembot.just means she is asserting some indedpendence anmd wants control ovet her image

and you can help her pick products and apply carefully

TheMysticMasseuse · 08/11/2009 19:44

you're clearly not very hairy then, lapsedrunner!

dazedanddizzy · 18/05/2013 14:05

my 14 yr old has asked advice on this, she has quite fair leg hair, not much but you can see it. I told her that it's her choice but it was a faff if you can get away without shaving do so. The thought of spending anytime on anything but what she really wants to do was enough to put her off, also feeling my legs just one day after shaving didn't impress her . She's quite confident and it doesn't seem to have diminished her attractiveness to the boys!

thread.

The Op's child is probably doing their Alevels by now

HazeltheMcWitch · 18/05/2013 14:08

dazedanddizzy - this thread is 3.5 years old!

LadyBeagleEyes · 18/05/2013 14:12

I wonder if the now 15 year old girl is shaving.

Startail · 18/05/2013 14:12

DD1 just picked up one of my disposable razors and shaved hers, she never said anything to me.

Likewise she's bought hair remover read the instructions and used that.

DD is very open about her body, but she is also very independent.

NotSoNervous · 18/05/2013 14:15

YABU let her do it

SoftSheen · 18/05/2013 14:17

YABU.

I would suggest getting her a nice Venus razor and some foam- she is unlikely to cut herself. There is is much more potential for problems with the Veet cream (plus it works out very expensive) and home waxing is really no fun.

PiratePanda · 18/05/2013 14:19

Early highschool was when I started and so did everyone else. About 12, yes. Everyone felt incredibly sorry for the two Indian girls in our who had such strict parents that they weren't allowed to shave until 16.

12 is not too early.

PiratePanda · 18/05/2013 14:19

Our class

IcingTheCake · 18/05/2013 14:35

My mum showed me how to do it when I was 11, because I desperately wanted to and she was worried I'd do it without her supervision otherwise, I think you should show her, and let her know how to make sure she doesn't rip her legs to shreds!

Please don't make her be the one to get picked on because she's got hairy legs. There's enough to feel self conscious about at that age :(

YABU, I did it when I started senior school age 11 (back in 1984) and I'm sure that pretty much everyone in my class did too.

miffybun73 · 18/05/2013 14:51

Ooops, just realised that this is a very old thread - sorry Blush

YABVU and this is what I'd call small stuff that one should not sweat at all.

Here the girls got a ladyshave as soon as they wanted one.

Not as close as wet shaving but I kind of hope noone is going to be feeling their legs to tell, at least noot at 12 LOL. Also kees them out of the bathroom, 2 tennage girls de fluffing every morning , we'd never et a look in!

Waxing whilst clearly better probably wont be OK as she's get worried abut the growth you have to let grow back before a re wax. also££

If she really wants to wet shave those wilkinson sword ones with the "soap bar" bit on top are great and it seems impossible to cut yourself with them. Again they are a bit spendy though.
