To not want to dress my 6yo DD as a mini whore, but as a little girl?

I feel really angry as I look round some of the popular clothes shops and see mini skirts, crop tops even 'bras' for my 6yo DD. She still plays with dolls and yet some of the clothes that are aimed at her age range are really inappropriate.

What happened to dungarees????!!!!!

Is it only me who feels like this cos when I get on my soap box about my friends just look at me as though I am nuts.

Mine is 2 so I am not aware of the "fashions" for older ones but if that is the case, you are so NBU.

Am with you. I got so disheartened in M&S when looking for my 8 year old. They have sectioned clothes up to age 7 (fairly normal girl stuff) and then 7-14 is all red and black shite. Won't be going back.

Obviously YANBU...but I feel 'mini whore' is an extremely emotive term to use.

There are plenty of places where you can get age-appropriate clothes for children, I suggest you look at those.

Bras are inappropriate for that age. My advice is not to buy them

my dd is 7 she wants to copy her big sisters but I usually manage to steer her round to something more appropriate.....usually!

Next are the same- the younger girls clothes are beautiful and very girly. But she now falls into the 'big girl' range which goes up to 16- is it not common sense that a 6yo should not wear the same clothes as a 16yo??!!!

DD1 is now 10 but very tall for her age. I have struggled to not let her look like a crack whore for about 8 years. Next started it and they have all followed. M&S are shocking really. I used to love thier childrens clothes but now very rarely buy anything but baby stuff!

There are plenty of places...yes...but general places on the high street, not internet, if you need something in a hurry- its all a bit trashy. I needed a party outfit today, have scoured the high street and she falls into the age range of teenagers- at 6???? Its not right.

But I feel your pain. Loathe the mini-hooker mini-mugger look yet get past the age of 5 and it's tricky. Think that's why Boden is so often mentioned as it does children's^ clothes. H&M do Bodeny clothes at half the price and dd has a fair bit from MiniMode.

In our town (small) we have Adams, M&S and Next- all older style clothes. Went to next town- same again. Debenhams is slightly better but even then there are some really funny clthes there for 6yo!!

Mini mode is too small for my veeeery tall girl but there clthes are lovely. H&M where i live is only small and when I checked them out there were a lot of short skirts.

I think i should have been a Victorian!!

I have never seen a bra for a 6 yr old. It is extraordinarily easy not to dress your daughter as a 'mini whore'.
I see the odd inappropriate thing when I am out but I just don't buy it.
What about H&M, Boden, Zara etc?

Zara has lovely stuff for little girls.
I don't think short swingy skirts are tartish on little girls and more than shorts

My DD's 5 but v tall and I buy her age 7 clothes now.
She always looks like a little girl, and so do her friends.

I'm so with you on this, my DD is 9 and still very much a little girl, it is so hard to find suitable clothes. I used to get her lots of things in George at Asda but now everything for age 7 up is black with High School Musical on it (which DD isn't keen on) I did manage to get her a pink stripy dress in Next last week but it's on the short side so I'm wondering if it's actually meant to go over leggings. Thought £8 was too cheap for a dress!

H&M has lovely cords and trousers with knee patches like these Boden ones for £8 and knitted dresses like this for £8 from a city centre H&M.

Vertbaudet are another possible and have £15 off £40 at present. A bit ££ but Nordickids & Gap can be good.

yanbu - think its disgraceful as well that the nice stuff is so bloody expensive.

Ok, yes, we should all be able to get lovely clothes for girls on the high street, but in the meantime, I had a look through the Next catalogue, and in my opinion, obviously not everyone's, I think the pages below offer in the whole nice clothes which are not black and erm mini sl..... (can't even type it for little girls!) Here goes .... Some of page 6, some of page 9, Page 14, 15, 29, 25, 30, 31, 33, 33. They are not too bad are they? Although it does make me
angry that you can only get up to age 12 in the shops and 16 in the catalogue. Any more ideas more than welcome for me too!
