To not want to dress my 6yo DD as a mini whore, but as a little girl?

littletortie · 24/09/2009 22:42

I feel really angry as I look round some of the popular clothes shops and see mini skirts, crop tops even 'bras' for my 6yo DD. She still plays with dolls and yet some of the clothes that are aimed at her age range are really inappropriate.

What happened to dungarees????!!!!!

Is it only me who feels like this cos when I get on my soap box about my friends just look at me as though I am nuts.

I am with you on this too, dd aged just 6 and very much a little girl in terms of personality but needs aged 8 or 9 clothes as she is so tall. I'm struggling to find anything suitable. I hate all the slogans and really short skirts.

Boden is lovely but so expensive compared to high street. Asda, Next and M&S all horrible clothes atm. I want her in little girly dresses and pinafores!

Heated · 24/09/2009 23:12

I take the OP's point, this is Next age 3-16: here and here.

pinkteddy · 24/09/2009 23:22

that first top is just horrible Heated. I can't believe its available in age 3 - yuk! This is the sort of thing that dd would like here but only available up to age 4-5, probably 3-4 in store.

littletortie · 24/09/2009 23:24

I have noticed that boden and vertbaudet are being bandied around a lot on here- they are out of my price range at the mo as we are on 'the big save' -as I am sure they are for a lot of people. Beautiful clothes- daft prices.

George at Asda is ridiculous- really weird clothes!!

Affordable and 'young' looking clothing dont go together- thats my point.

Exactly heated- they are just vile arent they?

If you are on a budget I would suggest charity shops and NCT sales and the like.
Usually some very good stuff there
What about Primark or Peacocks?
I don't know much about them, are they the same?

LaurieFairyCake · 24/09/2009 23:26

H&M has some great stuff

if you have a small dd then Boden is great

I've sarted buying size 6/8 stuff for dd aged 11 - much easier but dearer obviously

littletortie · 24/09/2009 23:29

Primark is where I saw the bras....Peacocks is the same.

I will try H&M- our one here is limited but a bigger one in the city may have some nice stuff.

Agree, a 2-8 range or evven 2-11 range of that sort of thing would suit dd far more than these!

littletortie · 24/09/2009 23:31

Oh my god- they are dire!!!

4063 used to give 20% off Vertbaudet and free delivery, don't know if it still applies but they always have another offer along in a few days. Tesco have a double the value of clubcard vouchers if spent on clothes.

echofalls · 24/09/2009 23:41

I dress my dd in Next and she is a girly girl whos nearly 8. Yes there are grown up fashions but there is also lovely girls things too

TheLadyEvenstar · 24/09/2009 23:48

I was out the other day and I saw a little girl of around 3 or 4 wearing this outfit

with a pair of boots similar to this!

Instead of looking cute she looked like she was going on a night out, with her hair all done and make up on YES she did have makeup on.

god am i glad i have ds's

hmc · 24/09/2009 23:50

Agree with posters who suggest mini boden. It's not aspirational and nouveau, it's just that their clothes are for children

Countingthegreyhairs · 25/09/2009 01:02

Couldn't agree more.

Who wants to dress their children in black and purple skull-covered fabric?

You may already know about these but just in case:

My DD is 8 and I have never found it difficult to buy traditional, age appropriate clothing for her. I am aware that there are shops that sell adult style clothes for children, but I don't go there. I have a friend who buys her 9 year old adult style clothes; she thinks her daughter looks 'funky.' It isn't to my taste, but neither is it sexualised or impractical, so I can't really judge.

Wanderingsheep · 25/09/2009 08:15

I needed to get my 2 year old an outfit for my nephew's christening last week. I had a quick glance around New Look's children's section and I was shocked at how horrible everything was.

There were mini dresses with big chunky belts, for toddlers. Just awful!

TheLadyEvenstar · 25/09/2009 08:21

The problem is to find clothes for children either boys or girls which is not full of slogans you need to pay more money. Now thats fine on the odd occassion but ds2 is still going through big growth spurts and at 2 is in 4 yr olds clothes. 6 weeks ago I bought him a whole wardrobe of functional clothes and none of them fit him. Thankfully I got them 2nd hand and in primarche (primark to those who dont know).

Thats where i see there is a flaw in the market, and people are almost forced to buy mimi adult clothes and sloganed clothes. Because thats the only way they can afford to clothe thier dc

kreecherlivesupstairs · 25/09/2009 08:21

I find it hard to buy anything at all for my boney maloney 8 year old. She is totally against jeans or cords because they hurt her 'bit', she won't wear dresses or dress tops because they 'look silly', we are currently rotating a pair of velvet trousers with a new pair of strange material ones. She is such a fuss pot and wouldn't get the beige strange material ones because they are too much like the grey strange material ones.
I am currently putting great store in H+M winter range (because I don't like C+A and Zara is too far away from us).

Littlepurpleprincess · 25/09/2009 08:33

I find it just as hard for boys. DS is 3 and everything is black/dark colours. I don't want to dress him as a mini chav. Why should my 3 year old have to dress like a teenager? We are on a tight budget so we have to make do with Primark mostly. They are also the only shop round here that does adjustable waistbands . It's either mini mugger or some horrible slogan that says how naughty he is!

It doesn't make sense really. Primarks baby and toddler range is lovely. Simple, comfy, nice colours. But they only go up to age 23 months. Now on what planet is it more acceptable for a 3 year old to wear the same clothes as a teenager, but not the same as a 2 year old?

TheLadyEvenstar · 25/09/2009 08:41

Little thats exactly the problem I have with ds2. And yet their clothes for ds1 in 12-13 are quite nice, plain sometimes....

what is it with little girls and boys having to have these slogans etc??

Although now ds2 has started on the tantrum front i did but him a t-shirt which says

"Gone to the Naughty step back in 5 minutes" ----Made me laugh!

Jojay · 25/09/2009 08:43

Have a look in Debenhams - their new Jasper Conran range for 4-12 year olds is gorgeous nad they have good sales where prices come quite low - they go into sale this Tuesday if you fancy a bargain.

This and this make a lovely outfit - I've just got it for a friends daughter.

BonsoirAnna · 25/09/2009 08:48

Come shopping in France - little girl clothes galore, at all price points!

TheLadyEvenstar · 25/09/2009 08:49

JoJay that jumper is lovely! am not too keen on the shorts though...

Jojay · 25/09/2009 08:50
