To not want to dress my 6yo DD as a mini whore, but as a little girl?

littletortie · 24/09/2009 22:42

I feel really angry as I look round some of the popular clothes shops and see mini skirts, crop tops even 'bras' for my 6yo DD. She still plays with dolls and yet some of the clothes that are aimed at her age range are really inappropriate.

What happened to dungarees????!!!!!

Is it only me who feels like this cos when I get on my soap box about my friends just look at me as though I am nuts.

I love hand me downs lol DS2 is 2 and DS1 is 11, ds2 is still wearing some of ds1's clothes which have lasted through DS1, DN1, DN2, 3 friends sons and now DS2......am i taking it a bit too far?? lol.

mazzystartled · 25/09/2009 11:08

Gap?
v good in sales, which are regular
Try the hedgepig or peaceandjam for big sales on all the nordic kids type brands
ebay for mini boden

Fennel · 25/09/2009 11:25

I like hand-me-downs and so do the dds but it gets increasingly hard as they get a bit older, clothes tend to be well-worn, and also my dds have specific tastes and these are different to most girls so a lot of the stuff we are given is stuff they won't wear.

dd1 spent most of the last year in brown cords (H&M) and a green hoodie. She looks like a 70s throwback. when the cords were in the wash she wore her "spare" brown cords. she also likes pirate stuff, very swallows and amazons.

weblette · 25/09/2009 11:37

Agree completely with Bonsoir Anna's comment earlier... French kids clothes, even the cheap ones, are so much nicer.

MillyMollyMoo · 25/09/2009 11:42

Yes providing your child is a skinny whippet, I love Catimini clothes but my eldest two can't get their legs through the tights and they certainly aren't wearing the NEXT fat clothes range.
I think just as the Victorians dressed their girls in mini versions of themselves so do we today so if we don't like what we see on the racks for our daughters maybe we need to look at what we're buying ourselves.

alison222 · 25/09/2009 12:10

MMM my child is a skinny whippet, and I cant find leggings that reach past her knees that dont fall down on her. Jeans have to be from either Next or Primark so they have the adjustbable waistbands - and all her school uniform stuff cam from Tesco's cos their stuff had adjustable waists.
Dresses look huge on her if they are not knicker grazing.

Anyone who has some advice on finding clothes to fit a girl tall enough for age 8 or 9 clothes with a age 4/5 waist gratefully received.

electra · 25/09/2009 12:15

You are shopping in the wrong places.

Boden don't sell crop tops or mini skirts for children

Carmel206 · 25/09/2009 12:27

have you tried John lewis ? lovely girls things and not at all inappropriate?

kif · 25/09/2009 12:35

john lewis basically do boden knock offs at cheaper prices (and 'have it now' instant gratification). Always nice

ElenorRigby · 25/09/2009 12:42

Bonsoir Anna and weblette, Ive been having a look aon lone for French Girls clothes sites ive found one in English that looks ok called DPAM Do you know of others?
Personally I buy the vast majority of clothes for 2yo DD and 6yo DSD in charity shops and thet are very well dressed! Absolutely not tarty.
John Lewis looks pretty good too but paying full price for kids clothes I leave to the relatives for B'days and at xmas

thedolly · 25/09/2009 12:56

fat face sell really nice casual non tarty girls clothes

ZZZenAgain · 25/09/2009 12:57

bought (and still buy) a lot of dd's clothes in the boys' department. Partly because they're more practical and partly because that's what she prefers anyway.

verytiredmummy · 25/09/2009 13:02

I've only got a son, so I'm not really qualified to comment. But I completely agree with the OP. When I've bought presents for friends' daughters I've been shocked by the girls' clothes on offer at most high street shops.

Just to hijack a bit, I think boys' clothes are terrible, too, though. Hardly any choice (Mothercare on Oxford Street has about one rail of boys' clothes and a whole floor for girls' stuff) and what there is is covered in characters or slogans ("This is what trouble looks like"), which I HATE.

And has anyone seen Myleene Klass's range for Mothercare? Yuck.

Sourdough · 25/09/2009 13:10

Buy stuff on ebay. You can get loads brand new if you don't like buying second hand (don't have a problem with that meself) and my DD has a wardrobe full of age-appropriate, beautiful and unusual clothes, none of which cost a fortune. It;s a favourite hobby of mine - scouring for great but unusual stuff. Should start a vintage children's boutique...

BonsoirAnna · 25/09/2009 13:13

Cyrillus
Jacadi
Petit Bateau
La Redoute
Bonpoint
BonTon
Little Fashion Gallery

AuldAlliance · 25/09/2009 13:48

Blimey, Anna, I've just looked at Bonpoint, and they all have Union Jacks on their chests and furry animals on their hands.
Is that what the chic kids are all wearing up there in Paris?

BonsoirAnna · 25/09/2009 13:52

LOL I don't know, the only thing I have bought there for DD this season is this dress and the current shop window (which they change very frequently) is a very sweet teepee and campfire look, with marshmallow and sweet kebabs... Deeply innocent and proper!

ElenorRigby · 25/09/2009 13:52

Aww lovely thanks! Interesting that the clothing collections are grouped in ages 2-12, as it should be imo.

ElenorRigby · 25/09/2009 13:54

lol not got bonpoint yet

MintyCane · 25/09/2009 13:55

May have been mentioned already but I used to like dpam. BTW that dress is lovely.

AuldAlliance · 25/09/2009 13:59

heads, not hands. doh.

BonsoirAnna · 25/09/2009 13:59

Chic little girls in Paris wear Start-Rite Clare in beige or brown suede...

AuldAlliance · 25/09/2009 14:03

You'd be duffed up pronto if you wore a hat like the furry number on this page around here.

BonsoirAnna · 25/09/2009 14:04

Cordelia de Castellane - très très chic
Maloup - great nightwear and plain knits

I got DD this dress in pink for parties this winter - it's gorgeous...

BonsoirAnna · 25/09/2009 14:06

Everyone wears fur around here in winter! The buses are full of dames bourgeoises of all ages in head to toe fur from Toussaint until the first leaves appear on the trees!
