Yes you've got me blubbing now too, singing Puff to my 5 week old son and thinking of my darling mum who passed away in March and always sang 'You Are My Sunshine' to us - it's 'good' blubbing tho' IYKWIM. In fact you've got me on 3 counts - my son was in nicu as he swallowed meconium at birth and had pnuemonia as a result - was listening to 'Beautiful Boy' when I was having a rest and my OH was with him, that line 'the monster's gone, he's on the run and your daddy's here' set me right off. It was the Ben Harper version I was listening to, it's gorgeous as well. Ok, off to pull myself together now...

MissSunny I make you right there!

These are 2 of the songs played at my dads funeral

Roger Whittikar - The Last Farewell

There's a ship lies rigged and ready in the harbour
Tomorrow for old England she sails
Far away from your land of endless sunshine
To my land full of rainy skies and gales
And I shall be aboard that ship tomorrow
Though my heart is full of tears at this farewell

refrain:
For you are beautiful
And I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
(repeat)

I heard there's a wicked war a blazing
And the taste of war I know so very well
Even now I see the foreign flag a raising
Their guns on fire as we sail into hell
I have no fear of death; it brings no sorrow
But how bitter will be this last farewell

refrain:
For you are beautiful
And I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
(repeat)

Though death and darkness gather all about me
And my ship be torn apart upon the seas
I shall smell again the fragrance of these islands
In the heaving waves that brought me once to thee
And should I return safe home again to England
I shall watch the English mist roll through the dell

refrain:
For you are beautiful
And I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
(repeat)

and

Anne Murray - You Needed me

I cried a tear
You wiped it dry
I was confused
You cleared my mind
I sold my soul
You bought it back for me
And held me up and gave me dignity
Somehow you needed me.

Chorus
You gave me strength

To stand alone again
To face the world
Out on my own again
You put me high upon a pedestal
So high that I could almost see eternity
You needed me
You needed me

And I can't believe it's you I can't believe it's true
I needed you and you were there
And I'll never leave, why should I leave
I'd be a fool
'Cause I've finally found someone who really cares

You held my hand
When it was cold
When I was lost
You took me home
You gave me hope
When I was at the end
And turned my lies
Back into truth again
You even called me friend

Repeat Chorus

You needed me
You needed me

ohfuschia · 10/09/2009 00:47

TheLadyEvenstar - I'd lovingly prepared loads of music for the birth but it ended up in an emergency csection so all I'd listened to was a bit of Cocteau Twins before I got to the hospital. After a week in the nicu the nurses took pity on me and gave me a radio, it was Magic FM and the first song that came on was the version of Bryan Adams's song 'Heaven' by DJ Sammi - the sun was just coming up (had gone in for early breastfeed) - never paid much attention to the song before, do now though

Oh Wires came out just after DS was born and I used to snivel every time I heard it (DS was fine, full term etc, but anything to do with unwell babies used to set me off around then. And my blardy mother was addicted to fecking Holby City, DS and I were living with my folks for the first six months and every week there was a stillbirth or someone's womb exploding or something...)
Mind you, does anyone howl at the Night Garden theme? For some reason I got it into my head that people might play this at a toddler's funeral and now can't listen to it...

legspinner · 10/09/2009 02:58

Oh I'm almost blubbing just reading this thread dammit!

Have always found that Morningtown Ride by the Seekers chokes me up. Possibly cos it reminds me of my childhood and growing up with my little brother (who sadly died 20 years ago).
I used to cry at anything when my twins were babies - huge hormones there!

also a song about "and the loveliest of all was the unicorn" - about a unicorn who missed the ark and so the species died out - does anyone know that one?

Must go as my computer screen is getting all blurry....

Ozziegirly · 10/09/2009 03:01

"Get Here" by Oleta Adams is a sob fest for me. DH was in Iraq and it was on the radio a bit and I was busy planning our wedding so it was a fairly emotional time.

Then I saw it was on ad advert for potatoes or something and had to leave the room every time it was on.

I nearly had it for our first dance but didn't want my make up ruined.

delphinedownunder · 10/09/2009 04:43

In the Living Years (sob) always does it for me (sob). I can't play Puff to my class or read the book, as I get all teary and they laugh at me. Vincent has a similar effect. I was a big blub monster when we did a Van Gogh project.

TheLadyEvenstar · 10/09/2009 06:35

LegSPinner that my dear would be the Dubliners singing The Unicorn song...another favourite of mine...

A long time ago, when the Earth was green,
There was more kinds of animals than you've ever seen.
And they ran about and played while the Earth was being born,
And the loveliest of all was the unicorn.

There was green alligators and long-necked geese,
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees.
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born,
The loveliest of all was the unicorn.

The Lord seen some sinning and it caused Him pain.
And He said, "Stand back, I'm going to make it rain!"
He said, "Hey, Brother Noah, I'll tell you what to do,
Go and build me a floating zoo,"

"and take some".......

"Green alligators and long-necked geese,
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees.
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born.
Don't you forget My unicorns."

Old Noah was there to answer the call,
He finished up the ark just as the rain started to fall.
Then he marched in the animals two by two,
And he called out as they came through,

"Hey Lord,"

"I've got green alligators and long-necked geese,
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees.
Some cats and rats and elephants, but Lord, I'm so forlorn,
I just can't find no unicorns!"

And Noah looked out through the driving rain,
Them unicorns were hiding, playing silly games.
Kicking and splashing while the rain was pourin',
Oh, them silly unicorns!

There was green alligators and long-necked geese,
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees.
Noah cried, "Close the door because it's starting to storm,
And we just can't wait for those unicorns!"

The ark started moving, it drifted with the tide,
The unicorns looked up from the rocks and they cried.
And the waters came down and sort of floated them away,
That's why you never see unicorns to this very day.

You'll see some green alligators and long-necked geese,
Lots of humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees.
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born,
You're never gonna see a unicorn!

Another sad song that was sung to me as well....

weegiemum · 10/09/2009 06:56

I'd totally forgotten about Morningtown Ride, heck, I'm welling up even typing the name!

Train whistle blowin' makes a sleepy noise
Underneath their blankets go all the girls and boys
Rockin', rollin', ridin', out along the bay
All bound for Morningtown, many miles away

Driver at the engine, fireman rings the bell
Sandman swings the lantern to show that all is well
Rockin', rollin', ridin', out along the bay
All bound for Morningtown, many miles away

Maybe it is raining where our train will ride
All the little travellers are warm and snug inside
Rockin', rollin', ridin', out along the bay
All bound for Morningtown, many miles away

Somewhere there is sunshine, somewhere there is day
Somewhere there is Morningtown, many miles away
Rockin', rollin', ridin', out along the bay
All bound for Morningtown, many miles away

Rockin', rollin', ridin', out along the bay
All bound for Morningtown, many miles away

legspinner · 10/09/2009 09:41

thanks TheLadyEvenstar and Weegiemum for the unicorn / morningtown ride words - oops screen gone blurry again

MorningTownRide · 10/09/2009 10:01

Aaaah you bastards

Love that song ahem, hence the name.

Passing Afernoon by Iron and Wine gets me everytime.

Ach, I watched Titamic last night and i'm feeling all maudlin already!
