'why bottle might be better than breast' - GMTV this morning

Personally i am not arsed whether a baby is fed by bottle or breast,so long as baby is healthy & Mum is happy who cares.

what I'd like to know is if the mum is obese unhealthy and lives on a really crap diet, would that affect the quality of her breast milk? And if so, would her baby be better on formula?

PM73 - tbh I'm not arsed either, I actually FF. It's more the debate that ensues that starts to annoy me - although I must secretly enjoy it or I would't have started this thread!

I may step away now then. Am on the final chapter of "The Politics of Breastfeeding" and feel FF is definitely inferior.

plus my dd's were ff but weaned onto healthy food where as my friend bf but started her dc on sausage rolls and happy meals at 6 months, surley my dd's have been given the best start out of these two senarios.

PM73 - that's the whole point - the health of some babies is suffering because of lack of good feeding advice and many mothers are not happy.

Sensationalist headline as usual! What she's actually saying is that breast is best but those that choose to FF should be shown how to do it as many people don't get advice on sterilising and making up feeds safely. Which actually makes sense!

That about sums it up for me without the need for all the brow beating and nastiness.

Think it was more about the dangers of making up bottles inaccurately and people not being taught the new guideline etc. Seemed quite resonable and they were not saying one was better than the other I hope all the information was accurate although my DD and DS were climbing all over me at the time so only caught snippets. That bloke is a dick though, don't think its unreasonable to suggest that

Was talking to a friend yesterday about the general feeding of small babies and (as I haven't had one yet) I wondered - do hospitals send new mothers away with no basic education on what to feed a baby apart from breast milk or formula. I know people who have given their babies chocolate buttons to suck when only a week old. Surely someone somewhere would have had the chat with them about when to wean and how?

BeanieB, I wasn't told anything about weaning when I was in hospital with DS1. The HV talked to me about it when he was about 5 months old.

But actually thinking about it I was told nothing about breast or bottle feeding. I was just told to 'get on with it'.

Yep it's been on - see my post above. The midwife was talking complete sense, but the presenters' attitude was a bit though - they were actually quite dismissive of breastfeeding.

Oh I do know this, what I meant was that I know people or have been told of people who have given really young babies chocolate to lick or ice-creams etc and I just wondered how people leave hospitals or have midwives but can still be so stupid.

Surely someone some time during the pregnancy or after the birth would have tried to educate them on how to feed a baby? I think by putting the word weaning in I gave the wrong impression. What I meant was mums and dad shoving all sorts of crap into a baby's mouth when they should really only be getting milk.

and why would it be inappropriate to talk about weaning with a new mum - I didn't mean in a 'wean them as soon as you can' sense but more a 'this is what you do and don't do, and this is when you do it'

Im fed up of thease which is best things, we all know breast feeding is best but some Mums choose to ff for whatever reason & its their God given right to do so & doesnt mean ff babies are not as healthy as breast fed ones.

It is a mothers right to choose and no one should be bullied into one or the other. My very healthy DDs were FF, my choice . My sils dds were breast fed and the sickliest children I know.

As long as baby is healthy and mum happy why does it bother anyone else!
